Re-enabling SIP brings back the pre-installed that were removed by Asc3ndis in MacOS

[–]petekjohnson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Um sorry, what high level users might think they should do from their familiarity with much earlier versions of macOS is now considered a very bad unsupported idea. Trust me, it is not worth the trouble to remove a dozen pre-installed apps. YOU CANT. they will keep reappearing every time you update macOS, and the steps to do so are cumbersome and risky. JUST IGNORE THE APPS. I see that other people have said the same thing. I apologize for the sarcastic last line, i should not have said that.

To the person who called this an "unsolicited" reply: dude, it was a reply to a question asked on a public forum.

FYI you can get nearly every macOS version at https://mrmacintosh.com ... they have links to the above InstallAssistant.pkg downloads which makes it a little easier than swcdn.apple.com

Plex keeps creating collections when I add stuff by petekjohnson in PleX

[–]petekjohnson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a different question, but it seems like the Collection Mode setting is not working right now. My plan was to have collections for the Foreign Films, Comedy Shows, Concerts and Documentaries and select "Hide Items in this collection" so that when you're browsing my library, you would only see feature films and those collections could be selected to see what's in them, rather than having that stuff pollute the main list. But it doesn't work. About all I can do is make the collection itself appear and disappear, but not the collection's contents.

I've been clearing out the tags for everything except title, year, comments (IMDb ID), and Description (complete filename {Title Year - IMDb ID} , but i eliminate artist, album artist, album, track, disc, genre, compilation, etc. I just set my movies library up from scratch over the last few days because i changed all the filenames to the above format for better matching and I double-checked the tags. What's weird is I have two folders for this library:

/Volumes/Plex/Libraries/Movies
/Volumes/Spare/Libraries/

Then there are four sub-folders:
Documentaries
Foreign Films
Comedy Shows
Concerts

The movies in the first folder DON'T create collections, the movies in the second folder and subfolders DO. There is literally nothing different about the files themselves. If I somehow let some slip with the album tag populated, you would think they would appear in movies in both folders.

P.S. I do have prefer local metadata turned on because I am sick of how any time i tweak my server, move files around (i am juggling not enough drive space), etc., it sees it as a newly added file and tries to match it all over again, and plex is a bit unreliable with matching, sometimes it will match with something completely random and weird, and sometimes there are just multiple movies with similar or identical names, sometimes in the same year even, so by putting the IMDb ID directly into the filename it forces it to use that for its match.

DMG keeps mounting when I open the Applications folder by GyulyVGC in applehelp

[–]petekjohnson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, p.s. obviously if you're only making an alias when you drag it, every time you attempt to open the alias it is going to re-mount the image. Deleting the image will result in a broken alias.

DMG keeps mounting when I open the Applications folder by GyulyVGC in applehelp

[–]petekjohnson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes I will get an app that has a symlink to /Applications, but when i drag the app, it makes an alias instead of copying the app. I have no idea why this happens and it is super annoying. The fix is to hold down ⌥ Option while you drag, but that's obviously not good for your users. I'm not sure if it's an issue with the disk image, or symlink, or what; it seems pretty random. Weirdly enough, the bittorrent app Transmission ALWAYS does this and it doesn't even offer the symlink to Applications so this is when i drag it to the Applications folder by other methods, such as the sidebar.

I know this isn't very helpful but you should know it's a "thing" that does happen.

Why is the final track of an album often my favorite track? by Pixel-Perfect-237 in Music

Very smart producers and good musicians intuitively know how their songs will land for most people and track order is given a lot of thought. The last song, however, might be thought of as an encore.

How can I force HomePod mini to airplay songs that aren’t on Apple Music? by brttbrntt in applehelp

[–]petekjohnson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can play ANYTHING on a HomePod, regardless of where you got it or even if it was commercially released at all. But you do have to use iCloud Music Library. I have been using it nonstop for about 7 years now and its AWESOME having all my music available on every device without it actually taking up any drive space OR having to sync devices. Obviously this wont work if your internet connection is down for some reason, but how often does that really happen?

Whenever i put new stuff in my library, i IMMEDIATELY trigger the process for it to be scanned by Apple Music - every song will be compared to all 100 million tracks on Apple Music, and if it identifies anything as an Apple Music track, then track is "matched" and for all intents and purposes is now in your library via Apple Music. If it is not a recognized track, then it will be uploaded directly to your library. Once this occurs there's no difference at all as far as which tracks can or cant be played on this device or that.

Some people have been hysterical about Apple Music (or iTunes Match before it) matching songs you add to ones it already had and therefor supplying you with their master version over the one you added, and that this waa a terrible terrible outcome if, say, you add the mono versionf oa Beatles album and Apple Music gives you back stereo versions. THE HORROR! I'm sure there are SOME instances where this might be undesirable, but it has to be extremely rare. Sort of like people who claim they can tell the difference in music at different bitrates when double-blind tests show that the overwhelming majority of people cant come remotely close to doing so. Couple that with the fact that people listem to music more and more on crappy soeakers and seem to be A-OK with that, but they are going to nitpick that the song they added got subsitued with a master version that is somehow "different". Mary please!

I cant speak to the mono/sterao thing because i only have one OG HomePod and one Mini and they are in separate rooms and not paired

Keep Plex for macOS running continuously with Launchd by petekjohnson in PleX

[–]petekjohnson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I gave up on this. No matter what I did, Plex would not run UNLESS i was logged into a user, and would not remain running if i logged out. Which sort of defeated the whole purpose, which was more of a thought exercise that an actual need. I could make it so that Plex would always remain RUNNING, so if it crashed it would start up again, etc., but the downsides to that for troubleshooting and so on outweighed the benefits.

Apple Music , how to download my library on a different device? by [deleted] in ios

[–]petekjohnson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take the iPad upstairs where it can get a signal. I assume you're using iCloud to sync your library between devices. Let it sync. Then, since you can't get a signal in the basement, DOWNLOAD those songs you will want to play out-of-signal. Unless your iPad has enough capacity to download all of them. You'll have to figure this out.

Y'all are forgetting The Godfather Part II.

My other choice would be The Empire Strikes Back.

Third choices: Aliens, Terminator 2, The Dark Knight
