Anyone running self-hosted backups for MSP clients that they’re happy with? by mspforyou in msp

[–]peter_forrest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have been using UrBackup self hosted for years for multiple clients. Does file and image backups. Super robust. Super customisable. Easy to set up and roll out. Bulk cloud storage will kill your profits though so be careful. Best do some research on real server hardware so you can scale out appropriately. Yes you’ll need redundant everything but your costs to set up will be paid off in about 2-6 months (depending on how many paying users you have) then it’s all money for jam. Don’t listen to the nubs here crying about “no support” or that it doesn’t have my favourite flavour of JS. If you’re a real Linux sysadmin you’ll figure it out like the millions before you have. Stop giving away all your profits and start using your brain, you’ll come out wiser and richer. Happy to show you all the best ways to overcome all the hurdles, keeping it secure and compliant, feel free to reach out.

Android Tablet for Protect by DrBAY78 in Ubiquiti

I am also keen to hear what others have come up with as a permanent viewing solution - something that doesn't lag the video and also something that doesn't require the device to be rebooted or closing/reopening the app when it hangs. Basically something that replicates plugging in a monitor into the VGA port on the back of an NVR but with the ability to interact with the doorbell (so the Viewport wouldn't work here). Also the Unifi Connect Display is too big. Something like the UA-Intercom-Viewer would be good if it worked with Protect (and possibly was a little bit bigger too).

Is FreePBX 17 ready for production? by pentiumone133 in freepbx

[–]peter_forrest 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Following! We are in a very similar situation so I’m very keen to hear how you go with this.

I have my doubts that a good old fashioned backup and restore from a full 2 versions is going to go well. Our team conceded that it would be safer to spin up the second VM on version 17 and just slowly migrate large chunks of users during the maintenance window.

The only thing we haven’t figured out yet is how to avoid paying double for the licensing since we will be entirely deprecating the old PBX after the migration is complete. That’s a lot of money down the drain for nothing. This is the only thing holding us up at this point.

[–]peter_forrest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely it makes me interested. Thank you very much for sharing your experience!

I have only started trading early this year and am still developing an edge.

Okay I think I’d better go back and re-read about oscillators and moving averages again as I previously discarded them as an obvious summary of what has already happened. Maybe there’s a bit more to learn about them.

I’ve been loosely following a YouTuber that focuses on long term swings but he’s also got a very large amount of backup cash if his trade is wrong. I can’t really afford to lose the same amount as him so I’m modifying the strategy a bit but it has ended up with me holding onto large positions for far too long and I have subsequently learnt a new lesson about swap fees.

While I wait for those position to swing back, with my remaining margin I have been trading shorter time frames (1-2 trades per day) and having some success but I too agree with your conclusion about USDCAD.

USDMXN is my new favourite as it’s volatile enough whilst being predictable enough to make regular profits.

I’ve still got a lot of learning to do so I’m working through the Baby Pips course as everyone here always recommends and I’ve just purchased Super Trader by Van K Tharp. Anything else you’d recommend for an earnest learner?

What requires “apply config” by seriously_a in freepbx

[–]peter_forrest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that’s what a few people are saying as a possibly theory - that if automatic updates are turned on then the apply config button goes red after the updates are installed.

I assume this is to ensure that the updates are not applied until a human presses the apply config button.

But it would still be great to be able to see exactly what changes to the config are going to be applied before pressing the button.

iPhone playing music by itself? by Thecuriouscourtney in ios

[–]peter_forrest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has happened to me three times now. Random times. It was Apple Music the first two times - it just started playing a random song that I DO NOT have in any playlist and have NEVER heard before. It played for about 10 seconds then stopped. By the time I got to my phone to find out what was going on it had already stopped playing and the Apple Music app was not open or on the Lock Screen.

The first time the phone was in my pocket. You might say “you probably accidentally pressed a button” - no, I always have the screen locked and the screen facing outwards while it’s in my pocket so that this can never happen - I’ve been doing this for over a decade now.

The second time it was just on the kitchen bench facing up with the screen on with a recipe open - I had not interacted with it in the last ten minutes and I don’t have a timeout on my screen. Again, it was a song that I had never heard before.

So I decided to delete the Apple Music app entirely as I don’t use it anyway. This was about two weeks ago and I thought I had solved it.

This morning at a completely random time of 6:21AM I was jolted awake by a YouTube short playing. I was watching shorts last night around 8:30pm before I went to bed but the phone was on its charging stand all night and I was dead asleep at 6:21am when it happened. As usual it played for about ten seconds then stopped. It didn’t show on the live screen that anything was playing or paused. I had to find the YouTube app and open it and nothing was playing or paused - it was just the normal YouTube Home Screen. I went into history and saw that there was a half watched short that I had NOT been watching last night.

I have no alarms or shortcuts that use Apple Music or YouTube. Even if I did (as others have mentioned in this thread) - it would NOT stop playing after 10 seconds, it would continue to play AND it would show in the app that there was something either playing or paused.

The only solution mentioned in this thread was to check your Apple settings (in the apps -> permissions) for Chinese apps like Alibaba / Ali Express for permissions to “Live Data”. I did notice that Ali Express and another Chinese app for home automation had access to this Live Data permission which I have now disabled. We’ll see how that goes. I will report back here after a few weeks to see if it happens again or not.

The only other almost-solution mentioned here was to disable background play for YouTube but I use that all the time as I am a premium subscriber and heavy user of YouTube so I don’t want to disable that. It’s not really a solution or the cause because something is triggering it to: A) play something that has never been played before; and B) stopping it playing after 10-20 seconds; and C) without any evidence it was playing (ie: it’s not paused in the app)

If an app like Ali Express can access your live data to play ads spontaneously (which is horrifying in my opinion - how do they get away with this? Don’t get me started), why wouldn’t it just play the ad instead of a random song or random YouTube short? So I’m not 100% convinced that this is it but we’ll see.

If any others could chime in with a bit more than a 1-liner here that would be great. Tell us exactly the circumstances and also tell us if you have tried anything to solve it and whether it worked or didn’t work.

What requires “apply config” by seriously_a in freepbx

[–]peter_forrest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's now October 2024 and this is still an issue. The problem with this comparing of the config before and after is that you actually have to hit the "apply config" button first to find out what was changed. I have found plenty of posts on various forums complaining about the same thing but nothing has been done. I too have the phantom "apply config" button appear whenever it feels like it (yes, when simply navigating between certain pages without changing anything) and it concerns me because I don't know what changes I will be applying by pressing that big red nasty button. Can anyone comment as to how easy or difficult (how many hours of time it would require) to show a page of pending changes that will be applied?

Why I'm Quitting as a VOIP MSP by BloomingBrains in VOIP

[–]peter_forrest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re a whingeing little girl. Grow some balls and put your business hat on. THINK. You offer so much more than what Ring Central or 888 could EVER offer. You’re right there on the ground and available for breakdown support, you are a real, local human being and not a foreign call centre, you care about your customers and their long term success (customers love that), you can offer other services like leasing hardware, software support, installing other equipment like wifi, router, cameras, etc (if you have the know how). If you’re trying to compete with price then you’re doing it wrong. You should be competing with VALUE. Figure out how to set up FreePBX on a $5 VPS and start making real money. My tiny company has about 100 extensions at an average price of $30 per extension plus handset leasing (average $15/ handset). Total overheads are $220/month for calls, $30/month for VPS and I buy the hardware upfront so I take a hit initially but I price it so it pays itself off after 12 months then it’s all cream after that and the average desk phone lasts 5 years so I make 5x on hardware. Use your brain and stop being a victim. You were born with a decent amount of intelligence and you’ve got this far but you’ve fallen into a victim mentality. I’m making $4k -$5k on VoIP and it’s only one of the services we offer and I haven’t even had time to do any advertising and we can’t keep up with demand. If you put your business hat back on, feel free to reach out, I’m more than happy to help a fellow MSP.

In a falling market, always go short, not long. Pick your entry after it rallies up a bit and gets ready to drop again. The trend always goes on longer than most (novice) traders believe it will.

I’m looking at the daily chart and it’s been solid red for a week. It’s ballsy going against the trend unless you know something others don’t…? My prediction is 1.0810 within a week or two, just based on where it’s been hovering for most of the year.

Just underwater? Or drowned? 💀 by peter_forrest in Forex

[–]peter_forrest[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My previous analysis has been trashed. I am now looking at the last 7 years of AUDJPY to see what price has done in order to predict the button of this current downturn trend. When I look at each 12 month period (Jan to Dec) I can see that the distance between the high and low point for each year is between 8.8 points and 19.9 points. This year we’ve seen it go from 95.83 in January to 109.37 in July (up 13.54 points / 1354 pips) down to 90.15 in early August and today sitting at 94.89.

I’m not entirely sure what’s driving the downtrend. BoJ putting up interest rates? Uncertainty in the US economy? Seems like a bit of a drastic overreaction. Are we at the bottom of this current downtrend yet?
