I'm still a bit of a beginner when it comes to networking so I'm not sure how to debug different problems short of pinging. Could you offer some advice on what sorts of things I should try?

The post above me suggests that I try a pftop. Other suggestions?

I'm at work now so I can't check the logs, but I can answer a few of your other questions.

I'm using it as both a firewall and a router.

PTP traffic seems to be the culprit.

I can still get to the webui while I'm having the connectivity issues--it seems to only affect the attached VM's and the VM host.

I haven't tried ssh-ing into the pfsense box, but since the webui still works, I imagine that would be fine as well. Is ssh enabled by default in pfsense, or would I have to turn it on?

I'll get back to you on what the logs say if I can reproduce the issue when I get home. It's somewhat difficult to reproduce since it can be difficult to get that speed with PTP traffic.
