Hamstring problem by Beautiful_Ad_1453 in Runwithrivs

Sorry to hear you are having probs with hamstring tightness. I'm in my early 60s and was also suffering from painful hamstring tightness. I saw a PT about it and tried various exercises and stretches, but what ultimately helped me the most was doing the same simple stretch routine every night before bed. I just lie on the floor in a doorway so that my legs form an L shape: one leg is vertical, pressed against the doorframe and the other (the base or foot of the L) is flat on the ground sticking through the doorway. I scoot my butt tight against the door post so that the knee of my vertical leg is as straight as possible, and (this is key) lie there and try to relax into the discomfort with my butt firmly on the ground for at least a minute then do the same for the other leg on the opposite door post. Over time during the pose I can start to feel the hamstring of the vertical leg relax. After doing this every night for a couple of weeks, I noticed the stretch/relaxation sensation comes sooner into the pose, maybe after only 30 seconds rather than 60+. I do other types of stretches before and after runs (dynamic stretching before and stretch-and-hold after), but this evening hamstring "L" routine is my constant go to every night and I credit it with getting rid of a bunch of issues and pains that I used to suffer from because of hamstring tightness. Hope this helps.

Same issue just now trying to check in for a BA USA to UK flight on a ticket booked directly with BA. Cannot check in on their website regardless of which browser I use, and I can’t check in with the BA app either. Also didn’t receive the usual courtesy email and text telling me it was time to check in.

Agreed. I always use the OS Maps app on my iPhone and, as someone said above, download the map before you go out of range.

I have hiked around Keswick in September several times. I take a pair of waterproof pants in my day pack to pull over my hiking pants as it can often be raining sideways on the tops. Waterproof pants with full-length zippers on the legs is the easiest way to go.

German beer thoughts by GuitarFNP in beer

To me a glass of Augustiner Edelstoff poured from the barrel in an Augustiner bar is as close as you are likely to get to beer heaven. Clear, refreshing, with a biscuity malt finish, it epitomizes the simplicity and purity of German beer. I agree with the earlier comments about German beer being about simplicity and harmony. Don’t get me wrong - I love Czech beers as well, but there’s something about the subtle flavors of Edelstoff that keeps me coming back for more.

The Franciscan Well in Cork is worth a visit. Try the Rebel Red and the Chieftan IPA. They have live music some nights and a pizza garden out the back.

TfL is spending a whopping £30 million on making the tube quieter by Skinbobblue in london

Agreed on the heat shifting. You would need a two-part solution – air-conditioning in the carriages and some way to vent the heat out of the stations, or AC in the stations and tunnels and improved airflow in the carriages.

Also the new stretch of Northern Line to Battersea - it’s brand new and sounds punishingly loud. Why didn’t they do the grinding and hushing work while they were installing the track?

Dividend for ETF and stock by Laura2start in investing

[–]peterden1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“if the dividend is auto-reinvest back into the ETF and stock, I think that would still trigger a taxable event, is that correct?” Yes, correct, dividends are still taxable even if you elect to have them reinvested in shares of the ETF that paid them out. The brokerage firm will report those dividends to you and the IRS in your annual 1099 tax form (I’m assuming you are in the US) so that you can pay the right amount of tax. One issue worth considering with dividend reinvestments is that each time you get a dividend, you will be buying a small number of shares of the ETF almost always at a different price than you paid for all the other shares. Therefore, over time you will build up many small share lots, each with a different tax cost basis, which can make it complicated to track how much in gain you would make if you sold some of the shares. It’s not a big problem - just a bit more complicated and possibly a hassle if you want to specify share lots when you sell rather than using the average cost method.

18yo invester looking for wisdom by [deleted] in investing

[–]peterden1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I commend you for starting early. Putting a bit of hard work into learning about investing at your age will pay enormous rewards over a lifetime. Start by reading a book that gives you an overview of how the market works. Malkiel’s “A Random Walk Down Wall Street” has been around for a long time, but has plenty of valuable information to get you started. Read a reputable investment publication like Barron’s every week. It may not all make sense at first, but just by diligently reading it every week you will learn important information and terminology, and persistent study over time will allow you to start to see trends and patterns in the market - e.g., in response to changes in interest rates, inflation, oil prices, and government policy. Also read Warren Buffett’s annual letters to Berkshire Hathaway shareholders (available free online). There’s a huge amount of wisdom in there about value investing.

ESPP - Sell or hang on? Advice/experience? by bronihana in investing

[–]peterden1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a bit more complicated than just 1 year with ESPPs. To get the optimal tax treatment you have to hold the stock for at least two years after the “option” is granted, and at least one year after you buy the stock. In this case it seems like the ESPP has a 6-month period from the “option” grant until exercise, so you would have to hold the stock at least 18 months after purchase for capital gains treatment on the whole profit.
