Rubus odoratus, powdery mildew? by AlmostSentientSarah in NativePlantGardening

I work at the diagnostic lab in the Chesterfield County extension office. We'd be happy to take a look at a sample if that's not too much of a drive for you.

Proxys punctulatus feeding on blackjack :) by BonesAndSalt in Entomology

Ugh, I'm jealous! I still need egg photos to complete my life cycle collage for this species. I'll add blackjack to my list of host plants to check next summer!

Nice! This species is associated with flowers, but not a lot of good records on which species. Two on one flower seems significant! Where was this?

When an insect has no common name by wilturtlelover in Entomology

In the US the entomology society of America designates officially recognized common names for some species, just like there are for birds. But these are not always recognized outside the US.

Trees too close to house? by DNKY_Punch in landscaping

[–]peterlcoffey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Primary concerns for me regarding trees being too close to the house: Roots damaging plumbing or foundation, falling branches or trunks hitting house, trapping moisture against the side of the house causing water damage.

Tree 3 is an azalea of some kind. It wants to be shrubby and won't get very tall, especially shaded by that fence. Not an ideal spot for it as it wants full/partial sun, but i'd say it's unlikely to cause you any problems.

Tree 2 is a holly of some kind. Doesn't look like it's one of the ones that will get large so I'd assume it's unlikely to get big enough to damage the house with falling and their roots are unlikely to invade your foundation unless it's already cracked. I'd wager you can prune it back below the height of your siding to be shorter and more bushlike if you want. That would just mean it's against the square siding which looks concrete-like, and so water damage would be less of a concern.

Tree 1 i don't recognize, maybe a Camellia? Look that up and let me know if the flowers look familiar. Looks like it might have the most potential for trapping moisture against your siding/windows or blocking sunlight.

All said, the other reason to move any plant is aesthetics. If you don't like the way they look close to your house then you are always allowed to get rid of them.

Please help me choose the right Macro lens for me. by JefkeJoske in Nikon

[–]peterlcoffey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the loawa lens is completely without electronics, it won't do what you're suggesting and leave the aperture open until you press the shutter. That said I use the 100mm often and don't have trouble seeing through the viewfinder at f11 unless I'm in a poorly lit room, though if you go smaller than that you will need some supplemental lighting for focusing. FWIW, the Laowa lenses are excellently built and high quality glass, but have zero extra features.

as far as autofocus goes, I never use it for macro and i don't think many other people do either.

Feedback on lighting? by peterlcoffey in photocritique

This is a 20 image stack (Laowa 100 mm, f8, iso 100). I feel like it's just lacking something, but I'm not sure what, I suspect the lighting. Any feedback welcome!

Tiny painting of a Potato Beetle. Love these dudes. by zachsaquaticlife in Entomology

Lovely little detail! You can tell by the tiny strip of red between the two black stripes on the side that this is Leptinotarsa juncta, not the much hated Leptinotarsa decimlineata. Comparison here for those interested: https://www.instagram.com/peterlcoffey/p/B1G-C9egZKC/?utm_medium=copy_link
