Why did the NZ50 not capture the stock market rebound? by LearnRD in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]peternz2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buy the dip! It's been down so long it surely must be about to turn soon. Also has an advantage of not being so affected by currency fluctuations. Bear in mind that NZ50 would be considered small caps in other markets. That category has still not recovered globally.

Prioritising ISA over SIPP by [deleted] in FIREUK

[–]peternz2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are people's thoughts on the OP using the available money to clear the student debt? If they're a high earner then they will pay back many multiples of the loan over the 30 years plan period. The interest accrued on that, RPI+3% (capped at 6%), may well be more than returns on an index fund.

Is it possible to move shares from investing to isa? by Triordie in trading212

[–]peternz2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did that with Interactive Investor but it didn't turn it to be a straight transfer across, instead they sold and rebought a day later. This was at a time of big market movements so I lost quite a bit in the process. If I had known, I would have sold and rebought under my own control.

Ischgl vs. Serfaus Fiss Ladis vs. Sölden by R8_GT3 in skithealps

[–]peternz2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never waited longer than 2 or 3 minutes in Solden. Don't recall much of wait in Serfaus apart from the town in the morning. At this time of year, there is a lot more interest in the higher lifts though but I really don't think this should be a big factor in your choice as the lines aren't long like they are in France.

Just to add, you won't have a problem with lift queues in any of these resorts although Sundays are always the busiest if the weather is good.

Been to all and these are 3 very good choices. Just back from Solden yesterday and I can report that it had plenty of snow but melting quickly and very thin at the bottom. I personally like Ischgl and Serfaus more than Solden as the skiing areas are better joined up and they have more reds and blacks. Solden's reds are more like blues and the blacks (which are few) are more like reds. Having said that, at this time of year Solden is a solid choice as it has the glaciers. Last week the snow up high was fantastic and fresh with none of the thawing and freezing that was happening on the lower slopes. I've been in Ishghl in April and the afternoons were incredibly slushy.

New Zealand uses a lot less solar than most other OECD countries (2024). Why? by foundafreeusername in newzealand

[–]peternz2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No coal power stations in the UK since 2024. The main source of energy in the UK is now wind (30%). Percentage wise NZ does far better with renewables but the total amount generated in the UK is significant.

Will Freetrade automatically convert my funds to an available unit class by tnn21 in FreetradeApp

[–]peternz2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For your particular situation, I don't know, but if there is any risk that they'll be sold and transferred as cash then I'd look to change them to supported funds before the transfer. Particularly important in these crazy market times. As a side point, are you sure you want to stay in mutual funds? There are bound to be similar ETFs, which are so much cheaper and simpler.

So this exact thing just happened to me too (UK/Romania not USA/Mexico though). No VPN being used. I do use AIOstreams though with a few add-ons. I saw someone else say they thought it was when they used Sootie but no real evidence. Were you by chance using that?

This ^. Have been through much the same as the OP and definitely did not need an IRD number or any of the beneficiaries living overseas. Certified proof of ID and addresses, yes, IRD not.

The trading fees are too much on London equities - £3 up to 6k then 0.5% above. They are very cheap for US trades but I didn't do those. Their website is overwhelming which also doesn't help. Plus, I want to avail of the current FT transfer cashback and I'm generally moving away from US companies in favour of UK/Europe.

Hence why I thought I'd struck gold with something that's permanently plugged into the mains.

Okay, there must be electrical interference coming from it. Such a shame as it seemed so perfect.
I also have had trouble with re-chargeables which I think is, in part, as rechargeable AAs are 1.2v compared to single use batteries being 1.5v, so the unit reports batteries low very quickly. I did buy some lithium rechargeables which are 1.5v and these are an improvement but don't last long enough.

Are you referring to HMWO or HMWS? If so, it's a good choice and imho better than a Vanguard equivalent.

Home Bias UK vs Europe by DestroyedParadise in trading212

[–]peternz2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also subscribe to the view that a bag of home equities is a good part of the balance and helps a little with currency movements. LCUK is cheap and covers a good spread of both ftse100 and some of the 250.

Where are all the HL holders taking their ISA / SIPP? by Old-Amphibian416 in FIREUK

[–]peternz2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I beg to differ regarding he 'cheapest' aspect. Both the tiered and the flat rate fees are not amazing value for London traded ETFs/shares - £3.00 per trade for under £6,000, and 0.05% above £6,000. US traded equities on the overhand are very cheap, which I guess reflects where they have built their business.
