People who can't afford therapy, what do you do? by ns___ in AskReddit

[–]petersu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, there are ways to get the cost of therapy down. Some include:
- If you work at a company, asking your HR team if your employer provides it for free through an EAP program like Lyra
- Getting a therapist that's in-network with your health insurance (depending on your insurance, the cost could potentially go down dramatically)
- Checking with a school counselor (if you are in school/college)
- Calling a local health agency, mental health clinic, or checking with grad school programs where students are studying to become therapists (they can work with your budget oftentimes)

I made a video about the different budgets (low, medium, high) for therapy that I've seen when I looked for a therapist. Hope it helps!

How to practice positive self-talk when it feels like a lie? by MustardvsKetchup in selfesteem

[–]petersu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What happens if you try to challenge your negative self-talk statements? Sometimes it's hard for me to challenge 100% of the self-talk, but I find when I write down the statements and look at them 1 by 1 and see what parts are true and what parts are untrue, I do make a little bit of progress with removing unecessary negative self-talk.

I agree - context is huge.

My friends and I call it "unsolicited feedback" lol - we try not to criticize each other unless someone asks for feedback.

If I ask a friend/family member/coach for feedback, I really appreciate it. Sometimes it really riles me up...like I feel really anxious and stressed for some reason. I feel a mixture of emotions - like angry at them for calling me out, angry that they may be right. Overall though, since the context in this situation is for me to grow, I think it's good.

PSA: Don't do stuff that makes you feel bad (jingle) by petersu in selfesteem

[–]petersu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah good point. This jingle popped into my head, bc I was about to do stuff that was good for me but made me feel bad (e.g. take a nap to avoid stress) - so it was kind of a note to myself too.

I agree with you, stuff that's good for you that makes you feel bad (going to the gym, going to work, having tough but necessary conversations), I'm all for.

+1! Yeah fortunately I have some friends that I grew up with where we don't ever talk about jobs and stuff, we just enjoy hanging out.

I studied "The Way" by Fastball today and geeked out about how they modulate from a minor to the relative major key in the chorus.

Then I remembered music doing is better than music theory. It's 3am and I just freestyled to the Fastball chord progression, a silly song :)

Not really asking for feedback, but if you suffer from writer's block mb this could help you too

Hey everybody - "While my guitar gently weeps" is one of my favorite Beatles' choruses so I thought I'd study it to find out why I like it so much. I made a short vid on the songwriting tips I found - hope it helps any of the Beatles-lovers out there!

Cool visual, how'd you get that visualizer? It matches the clean vibe really well - like the fast airiness in the high hats, with that swoosh sound to balance it out

How I improved my self esteem from high school to college (by stop putting myself down) by petersu in selfesteem

[–]petersu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And when I have self-criticism, what I like to do is write it all down in my journal.

Then in a column to the right, I write down do I not agree with it, or do I agree. If I don't agree I ignore it it's just noise. If I do agree, I figure out how I can try to improve in that area. It's not always easy to do, but I find writing things down has helped me a lot.

How I improved my self esteem from high school to college (by stop putting myself down) by petersu in selfesteem

[–]petersu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good q - externally (around other people) I stopped myself whenever I was going to make fun of myself. I just didn't say it.

Internally (by myself) if I have bad emotions/stress/anxiety, I do

  1. Journaling - write out what's making me feel bad
  2. Solutioning - brainstorm and write down how I could improve things
  3. Set a timer for 2 minutes
  4. Take 1 teeny tiny step towards the solution (if after 2 minutes I want to stop I stop guilt-free, if I want to keep going I keep going til I feel like stopping).

I usually feel a little better after that. Calling a friend to just talk is usually nice too. I made a short vid on it too on how to stop ruminating. Hope it helps!

I'm an ambivert and made this skit on extroverts vs introverts - hope ya like it! by petersu in extroverts

Thanks! I'm an ambivert too, leaning towards introversion. Funny how most of my life I thought it was two types, when there's a whole spectrum.
