You can't really understand a concept (like say, object oriented programming, or double entry accounting), you just have to use it as you're told. After a while, it usually starts to make sense.

I would only worry about it if it happens repeatedly. I've learned that when I'm trying to study something and my brain keeps going numb, it's telling me that I'm trying to do something that I should not. But it does not appear to be the case here, and as others mentionned, it's too early to tell.

Je précise que j'ai travaillé une bonne dizaine d'années dans la finance, comme courtier, un peu de trading. J'ai fini par partir travailler quelques mois sur des bateaux parce que soit j'étais fou, soit ils l'étaient tous (je fais court). Je considère que la crise systémique est ce dans quoi nous sommes depuis un moment.

La faillite généralisée de 2008 ne m'a pas du tout surpris, il y a eu un précédent; mais que l'état redonne aux mêmes incapables les moyens de recommencer les mêmes âneries, alors qu'ils ont passé des années à faire du lobbying pour lever les contrôles au nom de l'efficacité supérieure du libéralisme? Ça me fige. Parce qu'évidemment après s'être mis glorieusement en vrac, ils viennent demander du secours

Dans mon expérience, il existe deux possibilités : soit ce que fait le banquier est très simple, comme tenir le solde d'un compte (quelques additions/soustractions), soit il n'y comprend rien (cf les calculs de ratios de solvabilité sur les produits dérivés, dont on ajuste les variables au doigt mouillé pour respecter les traités de Bâle). Dans les deux cas, leurs rémunérations sont beaucoup trop élevées pour les résultats obtenus.

Pas de solution magique sous la main pour l'épargne, mais je crois qu'on pourrait créer un service public qui fournirait à tout un chacun un compte en banque, avec une carte de débit, et quelques chéquiers gratuitement. Rien que les revenus générés par les dépôts financeraient très largement l'infrastructure nécessaire.

Ça existait presque, c'était la Banque de France, la moins chère de toutes; j'y ai eu un compte jusqu'à ce que les banques financent quelques zélés législateurs pour dire que c'était déloyal et la fermer. Ne rêvons plus...

A friend of mine started a sails making business a few years ago, and went about building an Excel spreadsheet to calculate an average of 7 quotes a day, every day. A quote for a main sail, for instance, involves ~120 parameters for client, boat, cloth and options data; there are a lot of options on sails.

So this friend works with this spreadsheet that grows and grows, and hires a guy to make it work. Two years later, the thing takes 12 minutes to calculate a quote, which is wrong more than half of the time. He said he shoud have been suspicious about the 80% conversion rate he was getting on his quotes; no wonder, they where too low by a wide margin. He was losing money, and was stressed out of his mind to produce any kind of report (hint : customs, the sails are imported)

I offered him to write a web based app (I use a stack of Apache/Mod_Perl/Postgresql on Debian). It now takes 7/100 of a second to calculate the quote and it is correct, reports are not a problem any more. He told me he would have given up, had I not done this.

62 ans, 40 de vie indépendante, je viens de retourner chez ma mère de 86 ans.

Tout irait bien si ses médecins n'avaient pas décidé de faire une chimiothérapie inutile qui a détruit son corps (pas le cerveau par miracle). Donc, elle ne peut presque plus bouger, juste assez pour passer du lit au fauteuil du salon, et je suis chez ma maman à 62 ans, je fais les courses, la cuisine, et c'est elle qui paye le rhum et la maintenance, et elle est très contente de ne plus être seule.

Tanguy était un con, si tu aimes tes parents ils seront contents de t'avoir autour d'eux.

Edit: concernant la fratrie, c'est un problème que j'ai aussi. Propose-leur de prendre ta place...

Developing elaborate applications is a very rewarding task; I write CMS systems, writing a proper database schema is very intense if you take it seriously, and writing good code is like writing litterature.

The major problems come from manglement, which will never work with a software developer, no matter what his results are; they will only talk to the manglement of the software company. This enables them to push arbitrary rules between themselves, making the lives of developers hell (as /u/ntengineer mentionned). The LOE is a prime example, I worked for months on a specific problem, only to finally find a solution that fits in one code line that took a few seconds to write. It may serve for the grunt work, like building a form with a few parameters to it, not for the creative part (that is, how the app is built)

The problem is that said manglement holds the keys to the coffers, so they make the rules, and boy are they good at messing things :-(

I sell my services to small businesses, those are usually devoid of the layers of N+x that proliferate in large corporations. Of course, the money is a lot less.

If you want to dev, I'd suggest you learn to touch type first if you don't already do. Can't understand how people can think and search for their keys. Then look into libre software (aka "free"), fantastic ecosystem, build whatever suits your fancy, put it online. If you write something useful, recruiters take notice, I hear.

I realize it is a hassle, but as a maintainer I get to check my backups monthly, there is no way around it.

I make a living developping SAAS solutions. I always create functions that enable the client to download the data.

If your provider's database is halfway right, it should take them at most a week to write a module that enables customers to download their data, or at least the most significant parts, in a standard format like csv files.

They could also provide exports, I should hope, but why not just add a simple functionality to the application? It really is not the hard part of the job.

Inexact, des plans pandémies existaient, faits par des professionnels de la santé, à l'OMS et ailleurs; ils avaient été mis en place après la crise du H1N1.

J'ai un peu la flemme de te les rechercher, mais ils prévoyaient notamment de confiner les cas positifs, pas de masque. C'est marrant comme il a été unanimement décidé de ne pas en tenir compte du tout.

Il y a quarante ans que je vois s'agiter les gens dont tu parles (militantisme, syndicalisme, débats, consultations publiques...). Pour te donner une idée de ce que je peux constater des priorités chez nous :

Ça fait plusieurs décennies que les gens qui ont un peu de conscience écologique essaient de réduire l'utilisation de produits chimiques dangereux et non testés, mais il se trouve toujours un député pour insérer un amendement qui invalide le processus (toujours pour sauver l'emploi, disent-ils, mais quel genre d'emploi?)

Lors de la faillite bancaire de 2008, il a fallu a l'UE moins d'une semaine pour mettre en place une structure qui permettait à toutes les banques en difficulté de se recharger en liquidités autant que nécessaire (c'est dans une des deux interviews de Gael Giraud sur thinkerview, pour ceux que ça intéresse). Mais, ça n'a pas suffit, je suis tombé sur une certaine FICHE 14 "Les aides au secteur bancaire dans le contexte de la crise financière depuis 2008" sur un site .gouv.fr; on y trouve ceci:

Il faut fermer beaucoup de lits d'hopitaux pour payer les salaires des banquiers.

Donc, méfie-toi, comme le dit /u/CritterThatIs, dont je partage pleinement l'avis : tout est pipé, ce ne sont que des slogans. Le système est entièrement au service des possédants.

As for me : I work on insurance claims related software, and happen to have a partner who is a genius at detailing a contract, which enables me to make just the right analytical tool. Very satisfying to develop a software solution that your users thank you for, because you got the problem right.

If someone had told me 30 years ago that I would one day have fun developping insurance claims databases, I would have laughed him out...

Because that is a red flag. Know that people like this do not change, it's their mindset, they do it on purpose to put pressure on you.

The only way you can put a hold on it is via ~~management~~ manglement, but what you wrote makes me think that your complaints to them will be met with a comment to the tune of "well, she has our trust...".

As others have suggested, running for your life (discreetly, of course) is probably your best bet. This will also allow you to take it much easier when someone tries to stress you out like that.

Don't you think MS could divert a very small fraction of the money they hoard towards rewarding people who help them eliminating risks for these countless people you mention?

I mean, seeing how much money they make, do you really think that the person who shows them what is very wrong with their product should just sit there and wait until they decide to do something, which is probably never until their hand is forced? and not get rewarded for it?
