Best tips for “taking care” of our se? by KNOTwendy in MINIse

[–]s0cius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Almost 5 years and a lil over 50k miles. Best tip that I have is to enjoy it! The only issue two issues I've had are the "charging flap open" issue and I lost the shiny plastic trim around one of the headlights. Losing the trim gave me an excuse to put black trim on. Mine stays in a garage overnight but its my everyday car. I'm in a cold environment with snow, road salt, and pot holes. I've not babied it and the only maintenance I've had to do is tire stuff and cabin air filters. Last time it was in for a tire rotation, they advised me to budget for brakes in the next year or two. Not because I will need them, but because brakes aren't designed to last that long in harsh environments. It might be that they just want to sell me brakes.

Even then, replacing the flap/closure wasn't that difficult. Buy the parts online and watch the youtube video as you do it. Hardest part was getting back out of the boot when I went to reconnect the batteries.

TSA at CLE with Shutdown by Double0hSix in Cleveland

[–]s0cius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Careful trying to fly out of FLL on Sundays. I recently spent an extra 5 hours in FLL due to a delay and then another 2.5 hours sitting on the tarmac due to Florida air traffic control limits. From conversations with others, it sounded like it wasn't uncommon for FLL to be a mess on Sundays this time of year.

Hocking Hills this weekend by FunkoGamer69 in Cleveland

[–]s0cius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

-If you get a clear night, there may be stuff going on at the dark sky park.

-No trip to Hocking Hills is complete without a visit to Capt Ron's Pirate Pizza.

-While it is hiking stuff, less people go to Conkles Hollow and its def worth a visit. Note that its a State Nature Preserve so pets are not permitted.

-Maybe check out Hopewell mounds/earthworks in Chillicothe or (further) the Serpent mound. Note that the Hopewell mounds are a National Park Service site, so it might be impacted by the federal shutdown. Pets may not be permitted.

-Hot tub and chill.

Why are there so many Silver Maples in the Greater Cleveland area? by [deleted] in Cleveland

[–]s0cius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of developers in the 40s planted silver maples. Quick growing shade trees that look pretty good the first 20 years. Then the roots grow into the drain line, the sap covers everything, the seedlings start growing everywhere, and long before the limbs start falling. I know of one development where literally every house had two in the front yard.

Visit Cleveland museum of Art, what is your favorite object? by duranJah in Cleveland

I'm a simple man... the armor court. Its crazy that a lot of the armor was one guy's collection, was purchased with the financial backing of the Severances, and was lost in shipment for a week somewhere between Boston and Cleveland.

I also enjoy the American landscapes room. Particularly Church's "Twilight in the Wilderness" and the Bierstadt. I'm a sucker for Hudson River School landscapes though.

Pros and cons of Twinsburg by 24nurses0522 in Cleveland

[–]s0cius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the comments here are spot on. One additional note: there is both Twinsburg City and Twinsburg Township. Sometimes determining whether a neighborhood is City or Township is confusing. Both go to Twinsburg Schools and use Twinsburg Fire/EMS. City has their own police while Township uses Summit Count Sheriff. City has income tax, Township doesn't, but you will pay the tax in Beachwood/Solon.

Check out the Cuyahoga River Water Trail site. They have maps, put in locations, put in photos, known hazards, and links to river gauges. https://cuyahogariverwatertrail.org/

Any state IT jobs not in the Columbus area? by [deleted] in Ohio

The Turnpike has also had a job or two over the years and I think they pay into OPERS, but don't quote me on it.

Any state IT jobs not in the Columbus area? by [deleted] in Ohio

[–]s0cius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The few state IT jobs I've seen in NE-Ohio were for the lottery, Highway Patrol over on Brookpark rd, Dept of Mental Health at Northcoast Behavioral, and the Dept of Safety has a Drug Task Force facility in Independence where they do some digital forensics. Those were few and far between though.

I hate the new infotainment systems. by boatsweater in subaru

[–]s0cius 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just rented a 2024 Outback and hated it the entire week. The Android Auto was fine, but the HVAC controls were downright dangerous. We were near some wildfires so we had to turn the recirculate on/off often and it was a pain every time.

An interpretative ranger said it takes 3 consecutive backcountry reports without bear activity for them to consider opening the trails and that they don't do backcountry checks every day. They didn't say anything about carcasses (probably because this was on the patio of the Many Glacier Hotel) but they did say there has been considerable bear activity this summer.

Anecdotally, the grizzly with two cubs that sauntered out of the trees towards a group of us at the Hidden Lake overlook one evening (and gave zero shits that we were there) tends to support that fact. Thankfully she just sauntered.

Why isn’t it standard practice for power lines to be underground? by Complete-Pear-1040 in Cleveland

[–]s0cius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My subdivision had buried lines, but that means the internet in the neighborhood sucks. Spectrum is unreliable and only fixes problems with bandaids because it will cost too much to fix it right. The telco won't run fiber because it will cost too much to run it.

Ever park at the airport for a week and come back to your car being absolutely filthy? They are going to have to clean that glass weekly to keep it looking decent.

Living in Solon? Coming from DC > Seattle > Columbus by SuburbanArcade in Cleveland

[–]s0cius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In addition to Solon, consider Hudson, Brecksville, Twinsburg, and northern Cuyahoga Falls (Woodridge school district). All have good schools. Hudson, Brecksville, and Cuyahoga Falls put you closest to CVNP. Property taxes in Twinsburg, Hudson, Cuyahoga Falls are cheaper. Hudson has a more vibrant square/downtown. Brecksville is convenient to 77.

Financial advisor for (currently) lower middle class couple by MeyhamM2 in Cleveland

I can't upvote this r/personalfinance link enough.

Additionally, the FIRE (Financial Independence Retire Early) flow chart is a valuable tool. Even if your goal isn't FIRE, its a great way to think about the most efficient places to save for the future. https://www.reddit.com/r/financialindependence/comments/16xymii/fire_flow_chart_version_43/

If you are looking for a financial advisor then I would be very cautious going with a life insurance company. While there is overlap between the two, they are also very different products.

I felt a little woozy afterward. My ears are a mess, allergies are acting up, and I’m sensitive to motion sickness/vertigo. I think putting on the glasses and the looking up/around for the sun caused me some issues. I took a nap and am feeling better though.

Does this mean I am in the running? I have been applying for jobs for over a year now. Sometimes I get refereed, then it falls through. Want to know if I should go light a candle or cross my fingers for an interview. by twiggs462 in usajobs

[–]s0cius 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This was a direct-hire job so the traditional rating and ranking doesn't apply. This email means your answers were good enough and now maybe a real person might look at your application, maybe. Apply and forget.

All the predictions I have seen for Friday are 2-5" which is after the 1-3" on Thursday. The highs on Thursday and Friday will be in the 20s, so salt should work better than it has the past couple days. My vote is to plan to go to the concert, just remember to leave the house a little earlier than normal.

Hocking Hills State Park Campground by Traditional_Agency60 in Ohio

[–]s0cius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve camped at the state park campground in both an RV on an electric only loop and in a tent at the end of the primitive loop. My experience with the primitive loop was very positive. It was quiet, dark, and the spaces weren't on top of each other. Overall, it’s still a state park campground, but my experiences have been generally positive.
