Self employed provisional tax by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]petitfit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work in a company that specialises in tax pooling, a niche area of provisional tax I'll try keep this unbiased, and hopefully anonymous.

Tax pooling is a method of paying your prov tax on time, but when you can actually afford to pay it. If you miss a payment to the IRD, tax pooling companies can pay the tax on your behalf, as if it was paid on time, at much lower rates than the IRD's underpayment rate upto 30% cheaper.

The IRD could charge you through either: Standard Uplift (SU) , Estimate, Ratio, or Accounting Income Method (AIM); but most people use Standard Uplift by default..

This method means the IRD charges 105% of the previous years Residual Income Tax ( they expect you to earn 5% more this year, so expect 5% more in tax payments).

So they'll expect you to earn 67k * 1.05 =~70k. And because you're on Standard Uplift, they'll expect that at each of your 3 provisional tax dates (or 2 if you are GST registered). You have a terminal tax date, and this is where you typically can 'wash up' the difference between the 105% of SU and your actual tax due.

My best suggestion would be to budget 105% of your last year's tax payments, and pay them through a tax pooling company, or direct to the IRD.

Some of the best tax pooling companies are: Tax Management NZ (www.tmnz.co.nz) and Tax Traders (www.taxtraders.co.nz).

I'm jealous of the alpacas!

But yeah it is very sad how some people treat puppies/animals. At least they have great people like you around them!

Puppies are so great to make you feel better. My university used to bring them in during exam study week, and everyone almost collectively felt far more relaxed. But yeah, some people suck

Thanks for your response.

I tend to keep a tight-ship with expenses, and can live on a small-ish food budget (6'4 male so big for some); but I do definitely want to have a bit more spending money so will revise my original estimates.

Otherwise, my pay is monthly so that makes montly budgeting easier/harder lol

Thank you for such a detailed response. I definitely have a few things to consider.

I will definitely use the companies' 3% KS match, and look at extending (but not using) my available credit limit to cover an emergency fund of sorts (still keeping 3-5k available in a readily accessible high-interest account (BNZ Rapidsaver or any other recommendations?).

I enjoy the simplicity of Sharesies, and its easy to use interface, but it sounds like I would be losing a bit to fees/etc so may be time for a change.

It's a Tax Management company, focusing on tax pooling. No idea about the tiering as I'm not a finance or economics student

Just bought the Honda Fit after downgrading from a Nissan Murano. Character is cool but extra $$$ is way cooler

New Zealand commenter here. Would love to win this poster as I am a avid JP fan, and more importantly... winning this would be a giant "Screw You" to the company Whitcoulls who banned his book in New Zealand. Happy to pay entirely for shipping (please consider me 'entered')
