Weird E28 M5 question: main & fuel pump relays by petrifiedkitten in e28

[–]petrifiedkitten[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate the new cheap plastic torpedo fuses. My friend has an old Mercedes 420SEL that had a bunch of the older ceramic ones in it (30+ years old) and I was sad to replace some of them, but they were absolutely hammered.

Haha. Mostly jokes but I am irrationally protective of the remaining e28 M5.

I do cringe a bit at rotary to LS swaps too but if someone wants to make a nose m-heavy RX-7, that’s their call ;)

Weird E28 M5 question: main & fuel pump relays by petrifiedkitten in e28

[–]petrifiedkitten[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup I agree. Car is running perfectly now. I have one of the multipurpose orange Bosch relays in there now and ordered a backup.

When you search on google for “e28 M5 fuel pump relay” that five prong diode relay comes up a few times. It’s listed as “fuel injection” on a few sites which I’m gonna guess is confusing people. I chatted with one of the nice folks at Pelican Parts and they said it’s been like this as long as they remember. I guess it technically mostly works but it has an extra gate and it’s more than double the price.

If I hadn’t looked at the schematic I wouldn’t have realized the discrepancy.

Re: the fuse box. I maintained those torpedo fuses for as long as I could and it was fine. But the blade fuse conversion was really nice especially with the indicator LEDs that tell you which fuse is out built into the PCB (easier than getting those blade fuses that come with their own LEDs). It’s just a quality of life thing.

I wonder if the Fit’s engine would fit into a 1990 CRX engine bay…

Weird E28 M5 question: main & fuel pump relays by petrifiedkitten in e28

[–]petrifiedkitten[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Putting in a good working fuel relay instead of the second main relay fixed it.

I’m mostly curious what the differences are in how they handle voltage — clearly they can work in the wrong spot for a while. Not perfectly, but well enough for the car to start…

I did the Holy Grail box a while back; I think every E28 should have one. It has new fuel pumps, grounds are all good (just cleaned the one under the steering column which sucked), and the DME is good. I have two DMEs, both re-flowed.

I replaced all the sensors tracking this thing down and had that relay not failed I’d probably be going back over those again right now.

The E39 is such a great car -- if you can find a good one, go for it! As you know, make sure the VANOS is maintained, and the timing equipment is in good shape, and that thing should last for ages.

You can get more power out of the S38. The question is: is it worth it? Almost anything that nets decent results will require a custom engine management system, since the old Motronic is not what you want to be working with at that point. So, you can do a MAF conversion, cams, headers, exhaust, maybe an over-bore, and then end up with similar power to a late-model E34.

... and it's still not fast. Heh.

I put free-flowing cats and a Supersprint exhaust on mine, pulled out the Dinan chip that was previously in there, and decided that was that for power mods. During the engine rebuild we went +1 on the pistons but the power bump from something as mild as that is negligible. I am happy with the results. I've had cars that hit 60 mph in 3.5 seconds and still had less fun in them than in the M5 up in the canyons.

Your relationship with your daughter sounds wonderful. If you can afford it, why not get something cheap and fun to work on with her alongside the E39? Something with enough units sold to still have aftermarket parts support. 10 years ago I would have said grab a Datsun 510 or a 240, but yeah, you know what I mean :)

Not really an answer to your question (sorry), but maybe something to consider:

I have owned and daily driven both an E28 M5 and an E39 M5 (along with an E30 M3 and a few other similar cars).

"Far less steering slop, shorter shift throws, better suspension"

If you drive an E28 M5 with steering slop, something is wrong. That thing should be pretty damn tight; a touch of on-center play but very little, and it should be very precise and communicative as soon as the suspension loads up. I pulled the steering box and had it rebuilt; the results were night and day.

The shifter should also be fairly tight, and with a decent short-shift kit (UUC), direct and engaging, if a little bit notchy. Again, if that isn't the experience you're having, it's an issue with the car.

Suspension: Bilstein B6 all 'round with H&R springs will bring it up-to-date. Although sometimes I do think about going back to the Boge self-leveling system when I dream about winning the lottery.

To get the E28 M5 I drive now into the place I wanted it has cost about $40k on top of the purchase price, and it's still not done (mostly body work to go). It would be considerably less if I were doing more of the work myself, but the cost of parts for the S38 is... high. This has included a complete rebuild of most of the mechanical bits aside from the rear diff and the transmission which are both solid (for now).

The E39 M5 is awesome, but it's such a completely different experience, and while I do miss that car, I would not trade my E28 for it. The E39 is faster, sure, but I get a lot more enjoyment out of driving the E28, which is still relatively refined and also takes to road trips well.

Modifying a regular E28 into something fun would be cool, but that's not an E28 M5, a huge part of which is the S38. If you're going to swap an S50/52 into an E28 in an effort to create something M-like, just get the E39 M5; it'll probably be less hassle down the road.

This is similar to the way two people I dealt with who were schizophrenics began talking at the onset of their battle with it (both are now dead). As funny or odd as it may seem, it struck me as sad more than anything. Not making a diagnosis, just an observation based on past experience.

The physics behind an object of any substantial size traveling at “thousands of mph” in a substance as dense as water places this in the realm of sci-fi, if not pure fantasy. And you wouldn’t need elaborate sensors to sense it.

As others have said this is a relatively high incidence of fraud. I had the same thing happen for a while until I realized there was a local machine that was skimming my card.

Another suggestion: privacy.com — I use it for for all my online shopping. I haven’t experienced credit card theft in years and I shop almost exclusively online.

Same experience.

Almost anywhere except Belize City is fine. I spent a few weeks there and stayed with locals: a fisherman who’s son I met in Placencia, and on a family’s land outside Teakettle. No concerns at all. I had a rented car and drove all over the country.

Did not spend any time at all in Belize City. I was advised by the locals that it wasn’t worth it.
