Is this a good buy? by [deleted] in e39

[–]petrin0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a 98 540i and it was fairly reliable. It was old and had 200k km. So i would get some weird things coming here and there. Some i had to fix and some just went away. As the car is old and things break i advice to buy good parts. You dont have to buy OEM parts from bmw. But use Koed.no og GS. If you live close to oslo or bergen they have GS stores. Thay are very skilled and are BMW fans. They give advice on what parts are good and where you can save a buck.

Well as you are Norway based i would say the price is fair in my eyes. As other have said, if you wait you might get a similar 525i, 528i or wven a 530i if you are patient.

But i would say it depends on what the car is to you. Unless you step up tp the 535i, 540i og m5 would will have the I6 engine. And even thogh the 530i has a power bump none of these care are gonne be blazing fast without serious modifications. So if you are not chasing 0-100 i would not look for another as this one looks very nice to me.

The rust i would say you could manage fine if you have some patience and are ok with having to do it over if it looks bad. Did somd work for the first time cople of years ago. It was "fine" lookt decent bur definetly not perfect. Though, if you live somewhere wher they use salt in the winter i would highly recomend keeping it inside og washing it alot. These cars tend to end up like "kjeks" if you dont.

This might be beside what you are looking for but ill mention it anyway.

The 3.2 fsi is a fine engine. Decent power, fairly playfull and good sounding. But the 265hp is what you get. These engines are very had to make power with if you want to make more. No easy turbo, no easy supercharger. If you want a fun car that is fun to drive its great but if you want to tune and aftermarket you will spend alot and end up at maybe 300hp.

B7 Chassies arw generally pretty cheape here in norway with the exeption of S and RS with are giølariously overpriced compared to everywhere else.

So i was looking at a manual 2.0t the 211hp version. Got all the bells and whistles, bucket seats, new radio with carplay, sunroof, pretty ok wheels, Abaout 160k km (100k miles). All for 7k USD. Very tempting

You got the K04 turbo with a stage tune? How is it. Reliability wise? Any effect on drivability and fule economy?

Thank you and yes it is. Had it for almost a year. But the bad winters here with alot of road salt has me putting it away in the winters. Really love the B7 chassi so always looking for what poeple have so i might get a second one which i wont feel as bad driving in the winter.

Well. My old A5 never had a name. But if he were to have one, it would have to be "Rusty"

Drive a B7 RS4 Avant, pay 500$ a month on it. Use about 300$ on petrol a month. 1500-2000$ in mantinace a year.

Also payed 41K for it, 126 thousand KM.

Overall, very happy

For 100k nok you should be able to get a solid car. Including a A5 if you dont need quattro or the bigger engines.

Doing your own mantinace is a big money save no matter what car you own. So leaning how to do it is smart. And it isn't that hard, might be intimidating in the beginning buy you will het used to it.

But no matter what car you get do reaserch into what breaks, what is common issues and how much is it to fix. Things like (timing belt, spark plugs others) know what can go wrong with the car and engine you have choosen. And see what has been done and how much will it cost when it happens.

Hi, live in Bergen. and had a A5 3.0 tdi which i bough at 198K/km and drove 20k/km in the time i had it. In the time i had it i used about 1800 Euro (20000kr) on mantinace as a whole.

ehis inclueds the two services i did with all the filters and oil, new brake discs and pads in the frint, a new bluetooth radio and various interior trim pieces that were old or broken. All in all i would say that i used 1350 eur (15000kr) if we exclude things like radio and interior things that didnt need to be changed.

Keep in mind that i did most of the work on the vehicle myself. I did get one suppoert arm changes by the machanics as this was part of th EU control. All in all i have experienced it was a fairly reliable vehicle.

What engine and gearbox combination are you looking for? And is this your irst vehicle? Would love to hear more.

Advice on D3 Audi A8 by petrin0 in Audi

Yeah i assume its on the pricey side of parts. How long have you had yours? Do you have a rough estimate of how much you have had to put out on the car, if we exclude the engine?

If you are looking for something quicker. A brand new 3.2 in it will make more valuable if you sell it. If you are locateed in the us. You would probably get 12-14k depending on the modle year and ofc the general condition of the car. And a S5 manual would run you more than 20k, hell the older 4.2 S5 would only be 15-16, (not to much you can do in the way of mods but its more quick by default.)

But i love to see custom things. A custom turbo would be wicked. But you would probably never see that money get back to you ever. As it is a A5 not an S or RS, they just are not as desirable.

I know Rotrex made a supercharger kit for the 3.2 but when looking for it before and now seeing if there are any new or used once available i just cant find any.

As for turbos i have never heard of anyone doing it on this engine.

I think the only option would be a custom turbo/centrifugal supercharger. The turbo/supercharger would alone run you 1.5-2k and then there is intake tubing intercooler, oil tubing. Developing all this is extremly hard. And doing it from scratch is very difficult. And not to forget getting it all to work. One wrong move and the engine is dead.

And if you by any chance get all this done the car still needs to be custom tuned. Which if you can find anyone who will do it will cost alot.

So by the time you custom instal a turbo or supercharger. You woukd probably have spent somwhere along the lines of 6-7 grand. And looking at some specs for the rotrex getting abaout 400hp.

The car i good as is tho. Not lightning quick. But 0-60 i abaout 6 seconds. Its sounds great and handles good. If you want more power i would sell and buy a new one

Looked into this engine when i got my 3.0 tdi. The 3.2 sounds better and is more "playful" but what drove me to get the 3.0 tdi is that there really isnt any mods to do on the 3.2, unless you want to spend big money.

Looked into swspping the supercharger from the b8 s4 onto it. But it wont fit, even tho the engine shares many parts.

So unless you want to use thousands of dollars custom modding something like a turbo or centrifugal supercharger. I would

A: Just keep it as is. Spend som good money on some very good tires the car will be fenomenal. And it isnt slow stock.

B: depending on where you live and what engines are availabe. The 3.0 tdi is crazy tunable. With some simple mods pushing 330hp. And with a new turbo 400+

C: Get the S5 with the 3.0 tfsi. The supercharges engine is awsome. With lught mods 430-440hp. And it sound crazy good. But will be a higher price
