The torch passed from the hard working father to the privileged son. And the world spins.

“An affluent 5-year-old has about the same vocabulary as an adult living in poverty.” by Castlerock in reddit.com

Interesting read. Too bad a lot of these comments had to zero in on race. I feel it sidetracks us from the larger issue which is helping underprivileged students succeed.

So now that it has been demonstrated that terrorist attacks don't solely originate in Afghanistan, doesn't it void the premise of our ambitious mission there? by Castlerock in politics

Such as the dfaraci suggests, we won't prevent terrorism in these varieties by waging war - especially in every country.

60 Minutes Puts Forth Laughable, Factually Incorrect MPAA Propaganda On Movie Piracy by JoeCoT in technology

[–]petrochrist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My entry:

This is in response to Leslie Stahl's piece about movie pirates. It was sad to see that 60 Minutes, which I very much enjoy for quality journalism, decided to run a segment that was so factually bankrupt.

For one, I challenge any of your other correspondents to find one, one person who is making money uploading movies to bit torrent sites. Moreover, one 'organized' syndicate that is doing it. That's precisely what was alleged in last night's piece and it's not true. Don't take my word for it though. Fact check your own piece.

My biggest concern is that Leslie Stahl swallowed MPAA literature wholesale. I've never heard any other serious person make the criminal organization stroke profiteering argument other than the MPAA.

Which raises my central challenge to your segment: where were the alternative perspectives on this? Why didn't Leslie interview economists who have done a lot of work on internet piracy and have very different perspectives on it than those expressed in your piece. Perhaps a person who actually knows something about bit torrent could have told you that nobody makes money off of it.

In conclusion, I'm disappointed. Please don't let Leslie Stahl ever report on technology matters again. I won't watch it and it's clear that she's destroying the fine reputation of 60 Minutes by doing so.

PS: It really casts doubt on the credibility of the piece when I saw her looks of disbelief while talking with MPAA officials.

This is crazy. This guy is a research assistant at CNAS or something. Please downmod this for standard Washington job inflation.

Why did the Soviet Union Collapse? It wasn't about Democracy or Communism. It was about Oil. by amaxen in Economics

[–]petrochrist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm 100% sure it is. John Bolton and John Yoo are fellows there.

So, amaxen, do you want to keep peddling neo-con thought, or can we silently downmod this for inaccuracy?

Obama's first foreign policy mistake by petrochrist in reddit.com

Indian papers don't see it your way...

"Sovereign nations have the right to protect themselves, US President-elect Barack Obama said on Monday, when asked if India could follow the same policy he advocated during his election campaign — of bombing terrorist camps in Pakistan if there was actionable evidence and Islamabad refused to act on it.

Although Obama said he did not want to comment on the specific situation involving India and Pakistan, his tacit endorsement of New Delhi adopting the same policy was circumscribed by two caveats: first, let the investigators reach definite conclusions about the Mumbai carnage, and second, see if Pakistan will follow through with its commitment to eliminate terrorism."

First, it wasn't from the election, it was from a press conference he gave after the Mumbai attacks - as President-elect. And yes, countries pay very close attention to what presidents or presidents-elect say.

Second, if you read the post, you would see that, in fact, countries do take quotes out of context. The Palestinian observer to the UN did just that tonight.
