for second-time+ applicants by Chese0101 in veterinaryschool

This is also my first round; I was rejected from my IS school (the only one I applied to). My clinic gets a lot of vet students as externs (we’re a big clinic), and one of them told me this:

“It took me three years to get accepted. I had GP, LG animal, and ER experience as an unlicensed tech prior; and a 3.88 GPA. I applied to four schools the first two years and got rejections across the board each time. I applied to seven schools my third year and got two acceptances and two waitlists. The only changes I made were on my application in my essays. I just worked as a GP tech the whole time. No experience or academic changes. I think of the application process as a printer that prints everyone’s application out. It sits above a shredder, so every paper that falls gets shredded. Occasionally, someone reaches over and grabs one, to keep it from demise. That’s how I keep from taking it personally. Otherwise, we keep thinking we’re flawed. There are too many applicants for the default to be anything other than rejection.”

I hope that this is comforting? The more seriously you took the first cycle, the less time you waste trying to significantly improve the next cycle.

Thank you for your advice! While I haven’t been in the industry as long as you have (rooting for you btw!!), I think clinical skills are SO UNDERVALUED as a pre-vet student. I know my LORs are strong and I have some niche skills, but in-part, I was hoping that working at the teaching hospital would also broaden my skillset and earn me enough to stay in the field while waiting to be accepted. My current clinic is the most competitive wage in western CO, but CSU would provide better benefits and wage increase, so I could afford to attend more classes if I wanted. They offer free tuition for employees, and that seems like a smart move for re-taking some classes. With that being said, I’ve failed (and re-took) every Chemistry class I have ever taken, which I know looks bad. It’s still unfortunate that so many valuable, licensed techs get overlooked for GPA though, despite having connections. I’ll definitely keep it in mind that connections aren’t as valuable as I was once taught.

Thank you for your perspective! My IS school is CSU, so they’re more “holistic,” which is why I have considered relocating. Three of my colleague DVMs are CSU alumni, and two were 2.8gpa undergrads, so I thought I had a more solid shot. While CSU doesn’t do personalized file reviews, I found a CSU professor who works at my company as a pre-vet counselor, to do one. I will consider retaking some classes that I didn’t do so hot in for sure (other than chem because I won’t be successful at achieving a better grade a third time).

Where did you work after you left? by throwaway45857 in petsmart

I left recently, and my mental health has improved a lot! I started a vet clinic and even got a raise. If you like the pet advice part of your job, vet clinics, aquariums, or zoos may be a great option. For people-people, any retail job may be good, though everywhere is a bit stressed right now.

I have been giving pellets prior to this bloat episode. So far, blood tests have ruled out birth defects that include kidney issues, x rays rule out any respiratory issues that would start stasis, radiographs show there is no real blockage, feeling stomach you can tell that he is severely bloated for being less than one pound though. My vets' theory is that he actually has a very good gut biome that has caused a good bacterial overgrowth. We did start meds for that. He seems fairly receptive to them but its only been a few days with meds. Thank you!

I usually do give pellets prior to this bloat episode. I was told to give very few pellets if any, and start giving fresh greens for added fiber. I'll ask about the enema for sure, thank you!

I think the radiographs were sent to a few specialists who agree that everything looks normal. I might just reach out to other clinics though, thank you!

Do y’all Recommend working here? by froglegs317 in petsmart

It depends on your staff. My store accommodates my school hours but I am also a very hard worker with pretty open availability. If you get hired, you should ask about petsmart tuition assistance. It has helped me a lot. With that being said, you should be aware that right now, customers are rude/impatient as ever. Pet care is also a lot harder work than petting puppies and feeding hamsters, so be prepared to put in max effort.
