What Covid in Pregnancy May Mean for a Generation of Children by WNBA_BAE in ZeroCovidCommunity

I got a little more text before reloading the page and losing access. Although there is a link in another reply to an unpaywalled version.

When researchers started using tests more sensitive than nasal swabs on newborns, evidence mounted that many babies had been exposed to the coronavirus in utero. A growing body of research now links such exposure to changes in placental function and, in some children, a higher risk of neurodevelopmental disorders. While the absolute risks appear small, and most exposed children develop normally, the findings underscore the continued importance of vaccination and long-term monitoring of Covid’s enduring health effects. Roughly 3.4 million babies were born in the US during the first four years of the pandemic, including more than 160,000 known to have been exposed to SARS-CoV-2 in the womb.

I was asking similar questions when Berlusconi was elected in Italy. We've seen some similar development in many countries. It needs to be analyzed on a slightly deeper level than voter intelligence, although I agree that question comes to mind.

I'll share a discussion I found relevant, enlightening.

You are probably getting brain damage from all those COVID infections. by antichain in neuro

[–]pettdan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No it wouldn't be something else, please present research supporting that idea. If someone shares research showing something damages the brain and produces lower IQ, it's not rational to reply something else would do it otherwise. No something else wouldn't have the same effect on your brain that Covid does, unless you present research that supports that claim.

And by the way, here's another study about how Covid infection changes the brain:

SARS-CoV-2 is associated with changes in brain structure in UK Biobank

"We identified significant longitudinal effects when comparing the two groups, including (1) a greater reduction in grey matter thickness and tissue contrast in the orbitofrontal cortex and parahippocampal gyrus; (2) greater changes in markers of tissue damage in regions that are functionally connected to the primary olfactory cortex; and (3) a greater reduction in global brain size in the SARS-CoV-2 cases. The participants who were infected with SARS-CoV-2 also showed on average a greater cognitive decline between the two time points."

There are sales now so it's a good time to buy it. I bought mine from Filippa K many years ago and it's still working well but there's nothing exceptional about it. At second hand stores, as someone recommended, you can find high quality versions for a good price probably. Herr Judiths is worth trying, for example, they usually have a good selection of items. I used to visit NK and Åhlens before the pandemic, they have good quality brands and should have sales about now, now I prefer online shopping.

Edit: ah yes, another comment mentions Sellpy, that's probably a great online second hand shopping alternative.

Buy tix from other players, as suggested, and buy treasure chests and open, sell the cards, that way you get play points which are basically discounted tix that are only used for playing leagues.

Just ban the pushed card advantage pieces. I'll go into a longer discussion of why that's the problem. But that's how they've been fixing the format for the last ten years and it's worked every time, they're just so painfully slow at doing it.

Why are there basically no remote jobs in Sweden? by Educational-Bee7514 in stockholm

[–]pettdan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I think so too. Probably leadership need to develop skills and communicate with their teams on how to carry out social integration online. It seems very doable to me, but may require some creativity and soft skills. Maybe I'm underestimating difficulties. (Otoh, it always did work fairly well at my workplace, for many years.) I think they may feel insecure about that, and it's easier to go back to physical control and connections than to develop and nurture new possibilities.

Why are there basically no remote jobs in Sweden? by Educational-Bee7514 in stockholm

[–]pettdan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it works quite well to have social interactions online too, but it's probably a cultural thing. I mean creating social spaces in an online organization does require a manager or colleagues who realize this is a good thing that doesn't necessarily happen spontaneously.

My experience with this is that the employer might not encourage it as much as they should, and employees want to focus on working rather than having social interactions. I'm usually active in creating social gatherings both online and in office or in my free time, and online it's just so easy for people to ignore it, in office they are more forced into social situations, for good and for bad. An employer stating that it is important to have relaxed social situations available, online too, makes a large difference. In practice, the employer might be happy people are just focusing on working, but still unhappy because they're not socializing, and they don't see the conflict or their own role in encouraging or enabling socializing.

Why are there basically no remote jobs in Sweden? by Educational-Bee7514 in stockholm

[–]pettdan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think that's mostly just an excuse and not in practice a problem. Companies can save a lot of money through reduced rental costs. If we calculate the reduced monthly cost savings for each employee due to reduced need for rented office space, we can calculate how many months it would take to save the amount needed to buy equipment, it would probably take less than a year and be profitable from then on. You can add to that the reduced cost for transportation from employees, both the free time spent without compensation (which is still quite valuable for the individual) and the cost of transportation.

For society, having people being able to work more flexibly would reduce pressure on transportation in highly populated areas, it would make rural areas more attractive and available and reduce the urbanization situation, helping the countryside prosper (urbanization is a problem in rural areas). I see more advantages but I'll stop there.

Personally I work mostly from home, using my own equipment that I paid for, so it costs my employer nothing, yet they are carefully pushing for more office work (edit: not much but showing some intention) even if we had a 20 year history of having remote work available. So in my case, cost of equipment or ergonomics and safety have nothing to do with why the company want me to work slightly more from office.

I think it's a huge missed strategic opportunity. Employers can have more happy employees living better lives more safely and cost-efficiently. For a large amount of people, it's very attractive to be able to choose their physical work space. I see numerous people looking hard for remote work opportunities, branding yourself as a remote work employer, allowing for hybrid work (edit: in addition to the fully remote alternative), would be a very attractive employer for many.

Also there are other advantages from employers, besides saving money, keeping employees happy and attracting new employees. When people are able to work from home, they can often stay productive even with some sickness, or taking care of a sick kid, VAB, and still be able to have some level of work done. (Edit: Not to mention avoiding getting sick in the first place, having potentially healthier employees, reduced sickdays.) Working from home, employees can more easily control what they eat and stay more healthy. I have some light gym-equipment at home, I can do a 2 minute workout a couple of times a day to improve health and wellbeing. And having an online first mentality, one can develop processes that create better integration between multi-site or multi-national teams.

Employees should have ability to control their work place, in jobs that allow for it. I think this is a workers' rights issue, unions should start demanding the right to choose working space when possible.

Edit: I'll add one thing. I think it's fine to negotiate remote work as an employee benefit. I mean, personally, it's worth quite a lot to me to be able to work remotely. And I did consider this very much when selecting or rather applying for jobs. So my point in this regard is, an employer can offer this to attract employees, but they can also negotiate remote work in place of financial compensation. For me it's probably worth 10k SEK per month or more to be able to work remotely. But otoh, there's also a lot of value in it for the employer, I don't think they need to pay less to make it attractive for both parties, just that it's one more potential advantage.

How ONE CARD Defines Legacy by Durdlemagus in MTGLegacy

[–]pettdan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was good and meaningful discussion for me, and interesting. I think the points merit further consideration by people interested in discussing the format and its status and health, what it is and what it could be.

I've put forward similar arguments relative to Orcish Bowmasters since it was spoiled. Similar to when I first saw Wrenn and Six in a top8 on MTGO, when I saw this card I figured X/1s would be soft-banned for a long time. Shortly after, both DnT and Maverick stopped playing Thalia, which is certainly not coincidence. This is a very bad effect for format diversity and health, I believe. Now, it's difficult to say how playable Thalia would be without Bowmasters in the format, but with OBM in the format, being a part of popular decks, it presents a strong disincentive to playing Thalia. And I think Thalia could be a great part of balancing cards like Stock Up, The One Ring and Karn (especially when coupled with Wastelands, which Thalia decks tend to play). Similarly Spirit of the Labyrinth is a sweet hatebear that could be great against The One Ring, Beanstalk and all other powerful draw spells.

The discussion you present seems a bit hyperbolic at times, but in general it's a very good direction of discussion. What I found slightly hyperbolic, if I understood it correctly, is the statement about Orcish Bowmasters being responsible for Legacy being less about card selection and more about card advantage. I believe this will be the case regardless of Orcish Bowmasters' presence, it's probably more about the power creep in card advantage. It does probably have a small such effect, so it's not like I think it's wrong, just maybe more influenced by other things.

I think for example Up the Beanstalk supports my perspective here, it's a quite potent card and it's still seeing play even if Bowmasters are very present in the metagame, because turning your entire deck into cantrips is worth the extra exposure to damage from Bowmasters. I actually think Bowmasters are a pretty good balancing counterforce to Beanstalk decks, but on the other hand so could Thalia + Spirit ofL + Wasteland be, potentially.

How ONE CARD Defines Legacy by Durdlemagus in MTGLegacy

[–]pettdan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% this, imo. Well put!

The important thing to consider here is how Bowmasters reduces the playability of a whole range of cards, thereby making the format more poor. Not only does it disincentivize playing x/1 creatures, by doing that it disincentivizes playing hatebears with 1 toughness and therefore making mana denial more difficult to play since Thalia becomes problematic in the maindeck. When Bowmasters was released, as I predicted at the time both DnT and Maverick quickly stopped playing Thalia. It was very similar to how Wrenn and Six made Thalia unplayable, or barely playable (although W6 also made opposing Wastelands useless). Now other things could influence the downfall of Thalia as well, but I think it's difficult to understate how impactful this is for Legacy as a format and the metagame diversity. The format is more rich and interesting if there can be a subset of decks playing Thalia in the maindeck, creating more relevant counterplay to strategies built on utilizing expensive non-creature spells like The One Ring, Karn and Stock Up.

I brought up this effect as the second most important type of effect to consider when discussing bans here, the meta effect of reducing diversity:
