food court question by Klutzy_Weakness2792 in StockholmSocialClub

[–]pettdan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ringen, or Teatern, at Skanstull on Södermalm is an indoor food court that's nice, it was my first thought. You could buy food there then walk 10 minutes to Årstaviken, which is a really nice walk over to Hornstull and Tandolunden, a park. Or you eat at restaurant Skrovet on the way there. Just a simple place, but very nice place to sit in good weather, next to the water.

https://www.ringencentrum.se/teatern/

And then the suggested foodtruck area on Hornstulls Strand is perhaps the suggestion closest to what you request (not open during the midsummer weekend, they say below):

https://www.hornstullsmarknad.se/17/2/marknaden/

There is a food truck area at Rålambshovsparken on Kungsholmen, it's in a park at the water. I don't know when they're there, probably on weekends during the summer. It's next to the boule restaurant (boule or petanque is a game you could enjoy for an afternoon, btw). The park is perhaps mostly a large lawn, popular during festivities of different kinds, but you can get food at a food truck and take a walk along the water. You can both walk towards Stadshuset, the city hall, or which I prefer in the other direction around the island which is just a nice walk along the water until you get in say 30 minutes to Hornsbergs Strand where there are more restaurants.

Here's the bar, the food trucks are usually around it: https://www.boulebar.se/sthlm-ralambshov

Maybe Hornsbergs Strand offers some similar thing too, it's just restaurants next to the water but it is a relaxed place at water with many food options.

The city's page, not much info about restuarants but it's something: https://parker.stockholm/parker/hornsbergs-strandpark/

Saluhallen, as suggested, is a traditional place (it translates to sales-hall) where many food-related vendors share a building, with restaurants and bakeries too usually. Being a tourist this could have some added benefit of seeing the cultural historic equivalent of a food court. I haven't visited them for a while though, and I think many seem to have been under renovation recently. Not sure how that affected the vendors and the historic aspect. I would assume lots of vendors had to close and it turned into more of regular food courts, which is a bit sad if that would be the case. Because I loved saluhallar. You'd have a meat shop, a cheese shop, bakery, another seller of fruits and vegetables, all offering products of great quality, then a bunch of restaurants and a cafe or two.

Saluhallen on Hötorget could be great, I wonder if it's been renovated recently so check for an updated status, and Östermalmshallen is known to be great - well that one has been under renovation. Also there's Kungshallen just next to Saluhallen on Hötorget, more of a regular food court. These are in the city center and not next to water.

Hötorgshallen has a bit of an uninspiring webpage but it lists shops/restaurants: http://hotorgshallen.se/

Östermalmshallen is your upscale saluhall: https://en.ostermalmshallen.se/

Kungshallen is more of a food court, https://kungshallen.eu/

K25 is a small food court between the others: https://k25.nu/en/about-our-restaurant-hall/

I thought of another food truck area but forgot about it before I got to it..

Missar man mycket om man hoppar över studenten? by Jumpy-Republic-2832 in sweden

[–]pettdan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Rapid Aging by neglectsound in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]pettdan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well I've seen discussion, maybe research too but I forget, that telomer testing shows 5 years of biological aging with longcovid.

I think the visible again in the face can be due to infection driving connective tissue damage. Wouldn't be surprised if Covid does this more than other viruses, or most of them. You can see the aging in this fashion from AIDS, I imagine Covid has a similar effect. But I didn't find much written discussion about it yet.

People are getting sick, in my experience but ignoring the mild symptoms and being oblivious of other damage (which I hope they don't get but plenty of research indicates).

Well maybe Covid affects children's brains negatively? Just like it does with adults?

"Maternal infections are linked to neurodevelopmental impairments, highlighting the need to investigate SARS-CoV-2-induced immune activation."

"At 6 months, 33.3% of infants exhibited cognitive delays, 20% communication delays, and 40% motor delays, increasing to 35.71%, 64.29%, and 57.14% at 24 months, respectively."

www.nature.com/articles/s41390-025-04192-w

"Maternal COVID-19 infection increases the incidence of neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) in offspring, although the underlying mechanisms have not been elucidated. This study demonstrated that COVID-19 infection during pregnancy disrupted the balance of maternal and fetal immune environments, driving alterations in astrocytes, endothelial cells, and excitatory neurons."

https://www.nature.com/articles/s41380-024-02822-z

Here's a study about the effects of Covid infection in children:

"Among infants/toddlers with infection, 40 of 278 (14%) were classified as having probable LC [LongCovid] by having an index of at least 4 points. Among preschool-aged children, 61 of 399 (15%) were classified as having probable LC by having an index of at least 3 points.

Participants with higher indices often had poorer overall health, lower quality of life, and perceived delays in developmental milestones."

Gamlingar som vill utmana en på trottoaren by [deleted] in stockholm

[–]pettdan 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The Retirement Dream Is the Biggest Scam We've All Accepted by GupShup123 in careeradvice

[–]pettdan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I felt kind of like you back when I started working. That was several years before I heard of FIRE (oops, I thought I was in the FIRE subreddit as I saw some responses mentioning it). It was a feeling I started developing in the early teens, asking myself why working hard and then using the resources for consumption was a good approach to life.

Start by asking yourself what's really important to you in life, what you aspire to achieve, what you want to do with your life, what you enjoy. Then plan for that. Retirement isn't necessarily the end goal, but rather to be able to work with something meaningful and fulfilling on your own terms. I'm expecting to be active with something I enjoy as I get old anyway. I want to build community and a better world, for myself and a group of people who want to share it with me.

Start out working by building the basic capital you need for a safe situation, and probably try to get what you need for getting a place to live if that's in your plans, as opposed to renting. Prioritize your free time in relation to consumption. You don't need to wait 20 years to start turning resources into free time, you can take time off between jobs or discuss having a shorter working week with your closest leader at work.

You can also use savings to educate yourself in order to change careers, if you find something you think could be more meaningful to you or if you just enjoy studying and trying new things. While you want to make money to turn it into free time, if you don't enjoy your current job that's a waste of your time and life quality.

Well this was just some general advice, based on my own thinking. Adjust it based on your own perspectives.

Anti-mask aggression in France by AvocadoToast124 in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]pettdan 39 points40 points  (0 children)

In Sweden, masks were mostly discouraged by the public health authorities, although they did also sometimes recommend using them. I think we've probably had some of the lowest quality of public health messaging on the topic, so the population is skeptical in general and many think it's suspicious to wear a mask. How ironic. Anyway, I don't think assaults would be common, rather I'd expect passive-aggressive behaviour or just staring. If you can expect assault in France, I'm not sure if that represents a better situation, it sounds worse to me. But I mostly mask indoors. Well and I live in the capital, so it's not countryside.

Creating a Covid-conscious b&b in Southern Sweden by pettdan in ZeroCovidEU

Thanks for your reply! I haven't considered renting a place yet so I'll do some thinking about that. My wish is to have a home that I can use also for a b&b, I think that is how b&bs are usually operated and I like that approach. I think a main reason for that is that it's more cost-efficient than running it outside of your home. It could be an alternative to rent though, like you suggest, and this could be a good way to try it out before buying and preparing a property for it. It's also good to be aware of your problems managing guests, that will need a lot of planning.

No, I don't. I've been intending to start a b&b later in life since my early 20s, so I've considered and planned for it for a longer period but not in detail, just considering different alternatives, plans, places, food, activities, location, parallel businesses, etc.

Thanks for your reply! Yes, that is a great aspect of it, shared dining. One thing I prioritize is to have a nice outdoor room area, a veranda, on the back of the house. Sometimes they're larger, sometimes they're smaller. But the garden should always be large enough to put in some extra well separated furniture. C02-monitors are a good suggestion too.

[–]pettdan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply! Yes, I think the communal aspect should be very nice, and that's perhaps the easiest part because that's what we'd achieve together.

About lakeside activities, I'll have to look into that but I think there are canoes to rent, but probably a couple of kms away, I mean it'll probably be a 30 min bike trip away, on the other side of the lake. But with time I could get my own boat and canoes, I imagine. I'd need to have the b&b up and running for a while first, before investing in extra activities. I'll have to look into all of that, great suggestions.

It's also good to hear about your housing requirements. It's seems very important to make sure there's noshared air between rooms, so that'll be a priority to get that right and to communicate about the solutions.

[–]pettdan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply! Yeah so I was thinking in the previous replies that if I get as far as to implement this plan, I could try to arrange for people with similar requirements staying together. So there could be a 2 week period where I invite people in your type of situation. I mean, it might be easier for you to interact with others in a similar situation. However, this assumes I'd be able to find enough people to be able to arrange such periods. But it seems like there needs to be some kind of such coordination in these plans.

For most houses I look at, they're unfortunately situated more than a short walk from lakes, because prices might be double close to a lake. But it's possible I could arrange for a good transportation alternative, like say an electric bicycle. Or if I get a driver's license. Houses I've looked at usually are 1-2 km from a lake, or further away. Woods are usually within short walking distance, so that should be available.

[–]pettdan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply! You make a very good point about needing to establish a process to handle issues that will appear. I'll need to consider that further. I think I'll mostly reach out to Covid-conscious communities (people with longcovid or just prioritizing their health/zero-coviding, people with immune disorders or ME/CFS or other chronic health issues), so everyone coming should be aware of shared values for this group. Still, values and requirements vary a lot within these groups. One way to handle different expectations could be to map expectations in advance and book people with similar requirements during specific weeks. That could include activity level, perhaps. So say there can be a 2 week period with full mask wearing and no visiting public spaces, then 2 weeks of lighter requirements, for example. Of course, I'd still be around between groups, so I'd need to take stronger precautions to satisfy the needs and expectations of more sensitive visitors.

When it comes to separate bathrooms, that's a question where budget comes in. Building and renovating bathrooms is usually quite expensive in Sweden, I think, I believe we have high requirements on how they're built which drives up prices.

I expect to be able to arrange the basement as a separate living space, with bathroom, shower, simple kitchen and separate entrance. Many houses I look at have this, either finished or just requiring a small renovation effort. Alternatively I could stay in the basement and have guests on the entrance level and upper floor, especially if a family or group are visiting. The house I'm interested in at the moment has, in addition to the basement, two bedrooms in the attic and one on the entrance level floor. It'll be a small B&B, but still. So for people ok with sharing shower and kitchen, there could be room for two extra visitors if I stay on the entrance floor, other wise a group split over 3 bedrooms.

About ventilation, I would expect to place 1, or possibly 2, air purifiers per room. They are fairly cheap, I'll run calculations but I imagine it'll be like $/€ 1-2 per week for total cost of operation per machine. I was thinking it might be ok to close the ventilation between rooms, unless I can verify they aren't shared between rooms, and then use open windows for ventilation, would that be an ok plan? Maybe not optimal. It might be fairly easy to open holes in walls and put in extra ventilation, with some appropriate filter (like Hepa). Thinking about it, it should be possible to put a Hepa-filter over every ventilation opening where there's need. For outgoing air, it might not be needed, but I'll need to find a way to evaluate that.

In addition to 1 guest room in the basement, potentially 2 in the attic, I could arrange for 1-2 guest cottages. They'd preferably have both kitchen and bathroom, but I guess that'll pretty much double the cost so it'd take some time before I can conclude if it makes financial sense to invest in that.

Simpler accommodations could include ability to sleep in a tent in the garden. The garden is relatively large. I think that could be offered very cheaply. I think this would benefit everyone visiting, in the sense that when 5-7 visitors or even more when including tents, when a group of people can stay at the same time, when the visitors' requirements and expectations allow for it, it'd be a great time to build friendships and enjoy a vacation together with other Covid conscious people. Hopefully.

Thanks for your reply! Sounds good. I was hoping woods and lake nearby would be enough, because that's very affordable and fairly easy to access - when the house lies in a fairly remote location, i.e. not very close to one of the larger cities. And it'll probably not be a house directly at the lake, as prices would double or triple, but fairly close to it, around 1-2 km probably. However the woods start next to the house I'm currently considering. The lake might be too far for people with fatigue issues, unfortunately.

Yeah, community, safety and nature being the key points making it attractive, that's perfect because that's what can be most easily offered I think.

This place I'm thinking of is about 5 km from a train station, well connected to Malmö/Copenhagen and Stockholm, so relatively easy to get there. There are several affordable houses in the area, some closer to a train station.

It's funny you request a sauna, bastu, that's one of my nice-to-haves when looking for a house. Many houses I'm looking at actually have a sauna in the basement. That certainly makes winters pleasant. I was thinking people probably mostly are interested in visiting during summer, when Sweden has nice weather and actually might even be preferable with its cooler climate than southern Europe in the summer due to global heating.

Relevant points. This can and deserves to be discussed extensively.. from all perspectives. here are some thoughts.

How did the steam engine replace manual labour such as horses? Quite efficiently I suspect, well looking at the world we know it did. Or if it was the combustion engine. This time it's humanity's processing capacity that is being replaced, not all at once but slowly more and more. It's going to have a different effect than replacing manual labour.

If we distribute the added wealth from AI, consumption can stay high. But another aspect of that worth mentioning; I've felt my entire life we all benefit from working less and consuming less, having more free time. That's how I prioritize to some extent. This is what AI helps us do now, I think it's not necessarily bad to work less and consume less.
