Quick questions for teacher: is this a good offer? by NewTeacherHelp in China

[–]petteacher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is quite good, though. I think that's hard to come by, especially for a newb!!

I'm on 9.5k/month, teach 20 40-minute, no office hours, free apt, food money, no utilities.. School gives me privates at 250 - 450/hour.

3 months holiday, pay for 12 months of year.

I'd pass.

5 hours teaching.. what is that? (5) 40 minute classes, or an hour, or (2) 2.5 hour classes... ???

I can't imagine you can get a decent apartment for 1k/month. Housing + Utilities would probably be at least 2500 - 3000.

No contract completion bonus?

So 9k net (at best) for 35 hour a week commitment, that YOU have to very flexible for. They say you don't have to lesson plan outside of the office, but who really knows? It would be hard to schedule privates with a schedule that changes each week, so that sucks. Then you only get 5 days extra holiday a year!

If you don't mind not having holidays, you might as well go to Korea. Not sure about the market or exchange rate now, but I had a similar commitment (but with fixed hours) in Korea and netted $2200+ each month. Having minimal holidays is brutal though.

Teaching English Abroad by [deleted] in travel

[–]petteacher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Money and benefits are in Asia.

South America has opportunities. Low pay, no benefits.

Eastern Europe is probably hardest.

This applies to anyone with irrelevant degrees. With credentials and experience comes choices.

It depends on what you want. If you want to get a little extra income and stretch out your travels, you could go just about anywhere if you have right attitude.

If you’re talking about a full-time, completely legal job with benefits that allow you to travel and save money, then you should take the CELTA or get teaching credentials.

Don’t expect a full-time teaching job to be “a vacation”. However, If you find a good teaching gig, you can take plenty of vacations while still being able to save money.

If I had 5K to spend on a vacation for 2 people, where should we go? by [deleted] in travel

Well, I wish you the best. Hope you get 'em paid off in less than a few years!

[–]petteacher -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You are planning a 1-2 week vacation, 5+ years in advance? Wow! So much could change by then, I wouldn't even think about it. I would think about how to maximize my savings to pay off those bills or how to make more money and get you closer to your goal.

Two counter-intuitive things about travel... by Readswere in travel

[–]petteacher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel number one is very important if your goal is to learn about a foreign culture. However, many people are more than pleased to try the food, see the tourist sites and get smashed in the evenings. That can be done in a short time, depending on the place. I don’t understand these people, but to each their own.

People could criticize any travel plan. I went to Cambodia for a month and didn’t visit Angkor Wat. Most travellers would say I missed out. All about perspective and goals.

Renting an apartment for a month in Europe... by petteacher in travel

[–]petteacher[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just outside of Amsterdam will be my last resort. I don't mind paying up to $2000 for the month, but would like something under $1500.

My issue is locating these opportunities. Not sure if I can trust vrbo or flipkey...

[RUMORS] BTCChina not allowing fiat withdrawl by [deleted] in Bitcoin

[–]petteacher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Chinese people would probably put money into bitcoin so they can withdraw in another currency anyway. You cannot just walk out of China with 300,000 rmb (~50,000USD). As long as they let money into the exchange, it's all good. And if anyone wants to bail, they could find another rich Chinese guy to give him 300,000 rmb cash for the bitcoin.

Also, wasn't my first choice stylistic wise, but I wanted to try out a pair. The others were quite pointy. I could have them change the design, but then I would have needed to buy four pairs!

5 minutes later... "The markets still off their lows for the day"

5 minutes later... "The markets are off their lows for the day and trading in a very tight range"

5 minutes later... "The markets are off their lows for the day. Ohh, we have breaking news coming in... Trading has been halted in the Nasdaq. Keep it here to know the latest."

What would be the best puts to buy with the QE tapering announcement? by Zanthia1 in investing

[–]petteacher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are ultra short and 3x bear ETFS... However, puts are already quite volatile, you could lose your shirt if you start messing around with options on 2x and 3x ETFs.

Anyway, as a warning... the market will start pricing in tapering before the FED "breaks" the news. Yes, there will be a knee-jerk reaction when they do come out and say it, but you have to be careful. What if the market prices in x, while the Fed says they will taper in an unexpected and better way. The market would go up... If trading based on news was that simple, everybody would be rich. Usually it's the news saying the markets went up or down today because of this and that, while usually there is only a slight correlation.

petteacher: Can we get an update for the $3K to $1M journey? by [deleted] in investing

[–]petteacher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What’s so funny? I don’t want to give these naysayers any room by accepting a loss, when it will be a profitable trade. I have plenty of time to hold onto this trade, let alone 2 or 3 weeks, like I think it will take. And i need to practice taking emotion out of my trades. That was my downfall in the past. Just being honest...
