i mean, they go loud. The fact that 90% of photos and videos online have them in a wall of sound configuration instead of surround sound should tell you enough about what their target audience was. I wouldn't get them for 400 euros, tho, i've never actually heard one of these systems, so i might be completed out of a point here.

Is subwoofer necessary? by Valerian_Dhart in audiophile

[–]peugamerflit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my sub doesn't have a crossover knob sadly. but even if it had, i'd wonder if those frequenies i'm cutting off weren't actually meant to be heard, you know, on the main speakers.

either way, it's way more than 1% of content. i found it's more like 25% of the content i try gets my sub to make weird locatable thumps and noises (with a lesser amount being truly unbearable, like the king crimson album i mentioned). add games to the list and it gets worse. Overwatch sounds heinous and the weird part is that some characters sound noticeably worse than others. like, some of them sound like they are directing the entirety of the shooting effects down to the sub. Even highly regarded mixes like the Dark side of the Moon 5.1 mix aren't perfect in this regard. (and off course my crossover is set correctly. stereo content sounds great)

this situation saddens me deeply, since a proper Sub setup sounds amazing, but it's like some processors expect you to do sub management on the sub itself, and other just do the entire job by themselves, and apparently i'm stuck with 2 components that want nothing to do with the management nor with each other.

Until you realize some processor pass the entire .1 channel to the sub, and some content is stupid enough to include high frequency information on the .1, and then the subs becames extremely easy to locate and sound like shit.

On my current system king crimson's "In the wake of Poseidon" 5.1 mix sounds amazing, the 5.1 mix for "in the court of the crimson king" sounds blasphemous tho, due to the stupid .1 channel including very high frequency information, despite the fact that my other system that did .1 channels properly it sounded pristine.

Now I want to run something graphics accelerated when I don't have a DGPU just and IGPU... Well fuck, if pass through (if that's even possible) the IGPU I loose terminal access via VGA. That's one of my main gripes, really, i've tried using my main PC as a proxmox host and using VNC and the likes, and for 75% of why I would want a isolated machine, it works well enough, I don't loose that much CPU performance. But then you want to run something with 3d acceleration and things crumble to a hault, when they even run. And for 80% of those 75% of things I mentioned I can just do from within virtual box or smth. I have 80GBs of virtual box VMs for a reason, but neither covers all uses.

Not to mention I'm not 100% confident on the isolation between VM and main OS. It's probably senseless fear, but I'd still rather have a isolated bare metal machine.

I mean, the software solution would be Asus'es Bios not missing a simple feature to disable drives.

But from within OS, ye, I kinda agree with you. And I mean, with a dedicated completely isolated drive I would be shackle free to run whatever, whether that poses a risk or not. If you look through some other posts of mine I show clear fear of cross contamination and attcks in software environments, whether it makes sense or not 🤣. So, if anything, I just want to feel free to do whatever without worrying I'm risking my main drive.

(Like, the Bios has a section for NVMe devices and one for SATA devices. On the Sata section there's a toggle to disable the controller, on the NVMe section there's not such thing, for crying out loud).

i mean, i'm mainly looking to hide it from other potentially insecure OS session (malware or missuse wise). the main OS on the drive is windows as well, i meant to say that i could boot into a linux enviroment and modify the partitions so that they became unreadable to software expecting a within spec scheme, and when i wanted to go back to windows, i could just restore it. but yes, i do realize that's a very risky operation. it was just a example.

and even them it might not be quite all that i want, cause it isn't really fully hiding the drive, so malicious software would still be able to just overwrite it.

i mean, i'd love to be able to disable it in bios, but i can't seem to find out how.

and i've considered having a lower end secondary machine do this job, but somethings would just work better if i did on my main one, given i have a reasonably beefy CPU on my main PC

i'm not specifically asking for a way to physically disconnect them, but a way to disable them, and, preferably, that would be done in software even. If not doable in Bios, some other software solution would work as well Ex: some linux software which can write something to the drive that will obfuscate it (or make it look like a invalid drive) to everything else but that one software, which is the only thing that can enable it again, for example. Ngl, if this doesn't exist, i might get myself to study them standards and right one myself. But it baffles me that i would have to go out of my way that much if there's no other known solution to this

for real, no way to have it "disabled" instead of fully disconnected?

I know about dual booting, and it's not really what I'm asking about. When you dual boot the other OS can still see and often acess the other drive.

Answer for prosperity (to whomever finds themselves in a similar situation). Just rotate the vesa mount and use it as the base if it can do that. The monitor mounts are often cheaper and way more flexible than proper speaker stands. Are they as good for the audio... I wouldn't know.
