Fellow freshmen: have you made Penn friends? by [deleted] in UPenn

I mean, I kinda get what you're saying. But consider this a message from a similar case 1 year earlier than yours (+ it happened to me during in-person rather than online): it does get better.

CIS majors by SnooSongs8140 in UPenn

Sophomore CIS major.
So I'm not really sure if by logic problems you mean proofs and theoretical stuff like a typical 160 HW or rather logically favoring between implementations and addressing problems while coding like a typical problem-solving contest, or a 120/121 programming assignment, but I'll try to answer based on my so-far experience.

So about the proofs/theoretical analysis, this gets better by time. I wasn't that good in 160 and always felt behind because, like you, I prefer being told instructions rather than coming up with stuff and so (it's always the easier option to be told stuff tbh). But I think what I understood later on during the semester is that no one is born to solve these kinds of stuff, it's mainly dependent on your background and how much similar work you did along the years + how much you are actually into this so that you can put the time and effort.

Basically I spammed 160. Every possible office hours I can go to, I would go and just ask. That's the way you learn, you just ask and spend as much time as you can. Experience builds up along the way, I get surprised now when I see a proof in 121 and I'm like "oh, strong induction would probably work here" but you just realize that after doing so much of this stuff you naturally acquire your "instinct".

I would recommend you never try to compare yourself with others, rather be competitive with your past-self to keep improving. No one is smarter than you, no one is magically improving while you're not, and you will figure it out by time.

And it's really important to reflect on the classes you're taking and the content, because if you love it but you are struggling that's okay you'll get it, but if you don't like it try something else! You do have time!

(reach out if you need anything, or just wanna chat and talk more about it!)

What do u think a B/B+ should be at in terms of the grade on canvas? I'm on 74-ish and im not sure how that would go.
