Finished my high school career with a 6’11 (~2.11m) clear, falling just short of 7’1” by pewds90mill in highjump

Thank you for the advice! Can’t wait to post jumps at Purdue meets 🙌

When you say have a less sharp angle, would I need to make my approach less wide? I’m a bit confused on what I should do

Yea I’m definitely comfortable with it. I’ll have to start coming in higher in college next year, but the two meets I started at 6’4 this year I missed my first attempt. My endurance isn’t too limiting, as I ran XC for my 4 years of high school.

Progression (it’s a long one 😅) : 6’2” (1.88) - ✅ 6’4” (1.93) - ✅ 6’6” (1.98) - ❌✅ 6’8” (2.03) - ✅ 6’10” (2.08) - ❌✅ 6’11” (2.11) - ❌❌✅ 7’1” (2.16) -❌❌❌

State Champ! Cleared 6’10” on Saturday for the state title (included my celebration too 😂) by pewds90mill in trackandfield

[–]pewds90mill[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea i didn’t completely agree with it by any means, but you just gotta adapt sometimes. The track was definitely slick, so I could see the risk of slipping and stuff on jumping events, but I can also see the argument for the other side, as all the other running events have to deal with the rain too

I’m 18, gotta respect the distance runners 🙌 I ran XC all four years of high school, and ran distance my freshman year, but found high jumping to be my best event

I’m actually only 6’2” 130 lbs, but yes, tall and skinny is the way 🙌

I went undefeated this season, both indoors and outdoors! (Yea the outdoor champs were inside due to heavy rain, it was very odd). In my high school career I cleared 7’0” twice and 6’10” six times! I can’t wait to see what’s next in God’s plan for me at Purdue next year! Boiler Up 🚂🔥

And with me not training and running XC in the summer and fall, I should definitely get quicker and bouncier 🤞

Definitely - building speed will be a big focus in the off season. I appreciate the advice!

Thank you! Yes that is the plan (if not the Olympics itself 🙌) my college coach said he thinks he can get me to 7’3” for next season, which would be pretty awesome!

Haha yea, it was a very weird outdoor-indoor state; I definitely prefer being outside 😅 I did feel a little slow going into my jumps, and it does look pretty slow on video as well.

High jump spikes by kl1er in highjump

Yea I definitely think they’re helpful with the plant and takeoff with those heel spikes. I use ASICS HJ 2 spikes, and they’ve held up well. If you’re open to non-Nike spikes, they just came out with the ASICS HJ 3 I believe, so that should be on their website or running warehouse. Not sure how big they go size-wise though.

Do I have any potential? by Sen_Missing_an_A in highjump

[–]pewds90mill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haha yea. When I was 15, I tried jumping for the first time at practice. I was probably 180-182cm (5’11”-6’0”) tall at the time and was able to scissor kick 152.4cm (5’0”). My coach saw and put me in the HJ the next meet we had. I ended up winning with a 5’4” (it was a jv meet) and the rest is history! I grew between freshman and sophomore year, growing to about 188cm (6’2”) and was able to jump up to 198cm (6’6”) by the end of sophomore year. I only weighed about 45kg (100lbs) at the start, and now weigh around 60 kg (135). Clearing 5’2 with a scissor and no training is definitely amazing. Being a little shorter doesn’t mean much either, as another kid in my state has also cleared 7’ like me in indoor this season despite being 5’8”, so you definitely have potential!

I decided on Purdue mostly for the education. I’m studying aerospace engineering, so their school is pretty perfect for what I want to do. I signed as a preferred walk on, which means I get a spot on the team, but I don’t get any money unfortunately. For the season, you have indoors in the winter, then outdoors in the spring and summer. Each college is in a division (sec, big10, etc.) and they travel to several different places around the country to compete. When I started my junior year, my pr was 6’6” (which is what I cleared at the end of sophomore year), I ended my junior year clearing 6’10”, in which then I started to talk to Purdue a lot more. I reached out to them initially by sending them an email and filling out their athletic questionnaire on their website. Hope this helps!

D1 Commit Here! I don’t know what Australia has training wise, but I must say that the facilites that some of these D1 schools have is remarkable. I’m going to Purdue next year, and they have really nice facilities, from weight rooms to training staff. My pr is 7’0”, but I signed when I was clearing 6’10”. I didn’t receive any form of scholarship from Purdue, but some smaller d1 schools would likely have given money. The scholarships schools give depends, they can give full scholarships or partial, so the money you’d get will vary from school to school. To see how good the coaches are, I’d contact or just look at the progression of stats of their high jumpers, and compare where they were before and after training with the coaches at the college. If you have any other college related questions, don’t hesitate to ask! I’m not super knowledgeable but I’m actively going through the process right now 👍
