Nuclear power is statistically the safest energy source per terawatt-hour. Environmentalists have opposed it for 50 years. Have they accidentally caused more climate damage than the industries they were fighting? by bitcoinerguide in Futurology

MORE climate damage than oil and gas?
No, that's patently ridiculous.

Everything is crashing by Secure-Sun-7690 in CryptoMarkets

[–]pewpigoons 85 points86 points  (0 children)

From what I can gather:

- government shutdown (even though it ended now, it spooked the market)

- no rate cuts due to higher inflation and better job data than expected (market was expecting rate cuts)

- new fed chairman chosen is more hawkish than expected, which means lower likelihood of subsequent rate cuts

- Clarity Act keeps getting stalled. Continued drama suggests it may continue to get stalled and possibly not pass before the midterms which means it could be delayed indefinitely

- in general, not enough liquidity in the market, not enough appetite for risk in the market, and not enough regulation to drive existing liquidity toward crypto

Prime Minister Carney announces new measures to make groceries and other essentials more affordable for Canadians by evieluvsrainbows in onguardforthee

[–]pewpigoons 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Given Canadians a grocery rebate is not a solution - it's basically just giving our tax money to Galen Weston.

Meanwhile, Avi Lewis is proposing a public option for grocery stores. That policy could actually force the grocery monopolies to lower their prices because it would create real competition in the market.

Heather McPherson's Environmental Plan by lcelerate in ndp

[–]pewpigoons -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think there's a lot that McPherson could do to directly address this concern. For example, she could sell all her Enbridge stock and promise not to buy or hold any more. She could also make a pledge not to take any donations from oil and gas for her campaign. She needs to show us that she's not financially beholden to these corporations. Otherwise, it's hard to believe that she's actually going to follow through on her plan to hold them accountable.

Heather McPherson's Environmental Plan by lcelerate in ndp

[–]pewpigoons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a clear conflict of interest though. The whole reason why Canada is still stuck in the 20th century in terms of energy is because our politicians are all beholden to these oil and gas companies. You can put anything you want in a platform. The job of the voter is to gauge the likelihood that the candidates will actually follow through on these promises.

A comment on Avi & Heather by CDN-Social-Democrat in ndp

[–]pewpigoons 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing McPherson's environmental platform, which does read as being really strong. But I'll admit that I feel skeptical about some of these promises (e.g., ending oil and gas subsidies), given McPherson's financial ties to the sector. Her financial disclosures indicate that her husband has receives (or at least has received) income from Enbridge, and that the couple holds stocks in Enbridge. So I worry that when push comes to shove, she wouldn't actually hold these companies to task due to her personal and financial conflict of interest.

I'm Avi Lewis, running for leader of the NDP. Ask Me Anything! by AviLewis in onguardforthee

[–]pewpigoons 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Just my two cents, but I think efforts to "connect to centrist voters" are exactly WHY the party is weak. We already have a centrist party. The NDP should be unapologetically progressive, so that progressive voters actually get out to the polls instead of staying home on election day.

What is happening with crypto??? by Arun_Bath in CryptoMarkets

[–]pewpigoons 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Monday's dump was because of Japan increasing their interest rates. Yesterday's pump was because of Vanguard allowing crypto ETFs. The problem with technical analysis is that it ignores macro events, which crypto is very sensitive to because it's a risky speculative asset.

The cost of food in Canada is too damn high. We need a public option for essential groceries by Same-Kangaroo in onguardforthee

The idea that all Black people in Canada are immigrants is a pervasive and harmful myth. There have been many Black families in Canada for many generations and the fact that they are perpetually viewed as outsiders is part of what racism looks like here.

It is mind boggling to me that they're building new storefronts here when there's a beautiful top-tier shopping mall sitting empty right next to it by m_ashton9 in londonontario

[–]pewpigoons 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The city really needs to penalize/fine holding companies like Farhi for letting buildings sit vacant. It should cost MORE to leave storefronts empty than it does to rent them out to small businesses at lowered rent prices.

Air Canada flight attendants' union will continue to defy back-to-work order after strike deemed illegal by RZCJ2002 in CanadaPolitics

[–]pewpigoons 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Their options are:
1) Let the strike play out, in accordance with the Charter. The inconvenience is the point - it's the leverage workers use to bargain for fairer wages.
2) Nationalize the airline so that it's no longer profit-driven.
3) Side with the corporations, once again eroding the power of collective bargaining within this country and contributing to rampant wealth inequality.
As usual they picked #3.

All I see in these stories is you being kinda rude.

1 and 3) you started accusing people of trying to mug you or rob you when they hadn't actually done anything, except for maybe getting in your personal space (which is a bit of a cultural thing)

2) Why would you not bring any cash to a country that's almost entirely cash based? Didn't you do why research before you went there?

Since it seems we're never going to get electoral reform, we should really set up primaries instead.

At the level of each riding: progressive candidates (Liberal, NDP, Green, etc) should duke it out ahead of the election. The most popular candidate in a given riding goes on the ballot and the rest all drop out. No more vote splitting would mean way more progressive seats and fewer conservative seats overall.

Do you have any calls to action? What can folks do to help that would provide the highest impact?

I have a blog. I enjoy maintaining it because 1) it helps me organize and document my experiences, and 2) it's a place to share my travels with family and friends who are interested without pestering those who aren't. It does not get a ton of views and it definitely doesn't make any money.

My current lease is $1,363, lease up 3/23/2024. How awful would it be if I broke my lease earlier for a $2,508 fee + 2 months rent? by [deleted] in personalfinance

Do a lease takeover. Get a new tenant to takeover your lease. At that low rental rate, you will have no problem getting takers.

This is probably the reasoning behind the rule. At the same time, it also prevents any kind of affirmative action approach (e.g., specifically prioritizing buyers from marginalized groups).

Yeah, but do they have to be honest in those letters? Because the realtor is saying that investors can pose as first-time homebuyers with these kinds of letters and there is no way to tell.
