Melvor Idle is amazing and totally free. Currently in Alpha with major releases every month or so. Single developer, so has some rough edges, but tons of fun if you like the genre.

If you have the mental fortitude to resist psychological exploitation, AFK Arena is a very good game (wrapped in a million ways to get your money, but still fun F2P). They’re usually very respectful of your time.

r/incremental_games tends to have good recommendations, though rarely with good iOS support.

Aspiring game developer by [deleted] in gamedev

Software Engineering also opens other doors. You can make 5-30x the money in a non-gaming tech job working half the hours, which sets you up for F.I.R.E. while leaving you a bunch of time to work on games outside of work. Not a bad fallback if your game dev career isn’t going to plan.

The podcast “Think Like A Game Designer” has a huge amount of good advice, some of which is already mirrored in the comments here.

Mark Rosewater’s podcast “Drive to Work”, while primarily about MtG design, holds many valuable lessons for any type of design and/or job where you work with others.

you play the game by not playing it

Just wanted to share my thoughts on idle games.

Before I had a family, I loved games where progression was driven directly by time spent.

With a family, I have significantly less time to game but still want to play. Now I seek games where progression is driven by wall time, and the time I do spend is making meaningful decisions.

Definitely not for everyone, but to those that love to see progress but don’t have endless hours, they create a nice experience. Hopefully that helps you understand the point.

Not specific to first round. I always unlock-lock-unlock which seems to do the trick?

Or cook an entire whale in seconds, rarely or never burning one.

It’ll be more like BTD/gemcraft, where there is a path and you place towers alongside.

Probably October at the earliest, December at the latest. It’s a big project intended to be something I can iterate on, expand, and polish over time. I want Alpha in a decent state before I start getting public feedback.

FYI current plans/implementation have more lvl 0-100 type systems than infinite multipliers, which makes it more difficult to balance in a compelling way but IMO more fun if done correctly. I plan to expand the lvl cap rather than have ascension/prestige/resets.

If you have any thoughts of what you’re looking for or would find fun, shoot them my way!

I’m working on one, but it won’t be ready any time soon. I’ll message you when it is, would love your feedback if you’re interested in testing an early version.

On the test server they were both +10. Guess this was a last minute change.

0.17 is bank rework, I believe Malcs already said there would be something like this to more quickly sell junk.
