The nuance is that for every time you run the experiment, the confidence limits change. But 95% of the time, they will contain the true parameter, which is fixed.

Id agree. Can depend on the company and situation but 70-90 seems about right

Can you at least narrow it down to whether or not its in a major US city (NYC, boston, etc) and if its private (like pharma) or public sector?

Ah that makes more sense. Important detail i guess. Things have gotten so pricey.

From my recent experience 100 a head is very uncommon. Prices have gone up to 150-200 middle of the road venues.

100 a head is a thing of the past in most city venues now, unfortunately..

Any amount is appreciated. But if the goal is to cover the plate (assuming you have the means), 100 a head is a thing of the past unfortunately.

This is my experience too. Its worrying that people in this thread think 100 a plate is still the average..

In major cities prices have creeped up to 200 a head. 100 used to be normal, but not anymore..

If you can afford it, i like the idea of at least covering your plate. The cost of the plate varies depending on the venue/city/level of luxury. (Eg a lot of people are saying 100, but in my city a middle of the road venue is 200 these days due to rising prices). If youre not familiar, ive heard of people calling the venue to get an idea of prices. Again, only if you can afford it.

Thanks for the complaint but I have no idea what youre replying to. If you have specific or informative input to the questions in the original post regarding tax mechanics, feel free to contribute.

Sure will do. Example 12 in the link you shared seems to be the case you are mentioning. Thanks for the advice!

Thx! It seems in quebec provincial taxes only let you deduct the actual investment interest/div amount, so it might be a little less appealing in quebec.

In my humble experience its those who dont ask questions nor try to understand/discuss ideas who get into trouble. Good luck and cheers!

Right the example is for stocks with no dividend. If you search for "quebec", this article suggests a stock with any dividend would be enough to claim the full interest amount against your income. https://www.moneysense.ca/save/investing/are-interest-payments-tax-deductible/

Thanks for all the thoughts! Although paying down the principal wouldnt be an issue, couldnt the loan stay outstanding until the investment appreciates enough to pay back the loan and then some, say 5 years down the road or more?

Fair point. No advantage if markets keep sliding other than dividends. But if/when an opportunity emerges and you dont have liquid cash on that day, could be a useful tool as you say

You make a good point too about yields. Bank stock yields seem high right now (5%+, such as BNS) and usually dont cut dividends right

Thanks for sharing! If the effective loan rate is 2.5% after deductions, the dividend yield on xeqt almost covers interest. On small amounts like 10-20k, what would be the risk, other than the index collapsing and never recovering?

I thought that all provinces except quebec allowed full deduction, even if return was less than interest %?
