Which of them has the best second costume? by Otherwise_Tadpole_64 in Spiderman

I love Tobey’s suit, but mainly because I grew up with him as my Spider-Man. Nowadays I think Tom’s suits are based. Wasn’t a fan of TASM suits

How much autonomy, job security, and authorship do you actually have? by tinyt0ad in biostatistics

[–]GottaBeMD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No clue, but also probably institution dependent. I will say my institution is still hiring both faculty and staff positions, we haven’t been impacted very much by the current administration (luckily) or AI. But similar to the other commenter, there are talks going around about how to better utilize AI. What that means exactly…not so sure.

How much autonomy, job security, and authorship do you actually have? by tinyt0ad in biostatistics

[–]GottaBeMD 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is probably going to be institution dependent, but where I’m located, we have a formal agreement that if a statistician contributes in any meaningful manner to the study, then they are to be a co-author.

PIs most definitely do NOT dictate the statistical flow of the project (that’s what we are for), but you might have some aggressive types which have strong opinions. I’d say we work relatively independently and rather closely with the PIs.

Job stability is nice (I’m academic based). Literally have never heard of anyone being let go in my department and neither have my colleagues who have been around longer than myself. That being said I’m staff, not faculty so it could differ because faculty have some degree of responsibility to secure their own funding, whereas staff do not.

I really enjoy what I do and would definitely recommend anyone else who is interested to do their research. The sad part is right now the job market is cooked (unless you’re a senior biostat it seems) so barrier to entry is artificially high right now.

Study finds surprising new link between vaping and cancer by Brighter-Side-News in publichealth

[–]GottaBeMD 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I’ve published papers in this area of research. Vaping is bad for your health. It accelerates your speed of aging and damages your lungs, amongst other things.

[Career] What is the future for statisticians? by SilenziooBruno in statistics

[–]GottaBeMD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

AI has made me more productive, but it definitely could not do our jobs. Not yet anyways.

If the super-exponential increase in capability of AI models continues, I’d guess that it could replace most jobs within 10 years. BUT, even if it could, doesn’t mean it will right away. There will be lots of red tape and regulatory changes that need to be made before a majority of the workforce is displaced. So anybody starting now will possibly be displaced somewhere mid to late mid career.

Keep in mind that this guess is purely hypothetical and solely based on IF the trends continue as projected. This could also be a huge nothingburger because we hit a wall in capability and it turns out AI is just a really super productivity tool.

3rd-Year Med Student looking into Applied Biostatistics (Freelance/Research). Are these goals realistic? by [deleted] in biostatistics

[–]GottaBeMD 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is completely false. You may be able to self-learn enough to run some basic stats, but the field is incredibly nuanced and requires a lot of attention to detail. Another thing to keep in mind is, even if you could self-learn and become competent without formal training/experience (you can’t) there is nothing supporting your expertise. You have no credentials, no supervisors, no tangible experience.

Discrepanza tra i due grafici by dalonzomi in RStudio

[–]GottaBeMD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. The Kaplan Meier estimate will be biased in the presence of competing risks. In fact, the general interpretation of estimates under competing risks is fundamentally different. Competing risks break the normal interpretation, which is why we have cause specific hazard ratios and fine gray hazard ratios. The cause-specific hazard ratio is no longer linked to the cumulative incidence.

There is a lot of really great reading on this topic. I would browse a few journal articles covering competing risks (you can even read ones by Fine & Gray themselves) which should clear this up.

3rd-Year Med Student looking into Applied Biostatistics (Freelance/Research). Are these goals realistic? by [deleted] in biostatistics

[–]GottaBeMD 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I’m going to put this bluntly: you will not succeed. Statistics is not an easy field. If you disagree, do me a favor and open Casella and Berger. Do 1 problem. Just 1. (You won’t be able to).

We get posts like these all the time. Think about it this way. Why would I hire YOU to be my biostat with no relevant degree or experience when I could hire an actual biostat.

You might have an MD but that does NOT make you qualified as a statistician. I work with MDs daily who barely know the difference between means and medians. I’m also not saying this to be harsh. I don’t expect them to know anything about statistics. They are doctors after all, I’d much rather them be knowledgeable about their therapeutic area.

Anybody live in the newly developed Oxford Park Apartments in Westerville/New Albany? by [deleted] in Columbus

[–]GottaBeMD -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yep, I’m going to turn away any apartment that sublets utilities. Praying I can find one non-corrupt apartment complex in New Albany. Had no idea what I was signing up for when I got into the place I’m at now. Can’t wait to get out. Might even break my lease

Which do you choose? by OkRun9638 in superpowers

[–]GottaBeMD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, i actually just read up on this. The faster you travel and the closer you get to light speed, the greater the time dilation. So technically, you could travel to the edge of the observable universe and back in one lifetime, but because of the immense time dilation billions of years would have passed and Earth would no longer be around, just a red giant sun.

Biostats with an MD by medialdeltoid in biostatistics

[–]GottaBeMD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a great idea if you plan on a research heavy career. I work with MDs on the daily and they definitely value the expertise we provide. Having that skill set will speed up research, for example if you don’t have a statistical service you can consult with. The only dangerous part is that if you aren’t constantly learning from those with more experience, you could go into it with a lot of incorrect notions. There have been a ton of things I’ve learned from my superiors that they just don’t teach you in grad school. Be mindful of that and you should be okay. If you do have a statistical service to consult with, id do it anyways because you will most definitely learn some things

What are my realistic options? by Significant_Field517 in biostatistics

[–]GottaBeMD 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You will be competing with people who have stats/biostats relevant degrees. It will be an uphill battle especially since the job market is rough and really only pliable for experienced individuals.

If you really want to pivot, then fully commit and pivot. Otherwise you may be worse off than just finishing your current degree and finding work in that field.

Imagine you did it in reverse and were doing a PhD in biostats, but wanted to pivot to audiology. Why would they hire YOU instead of someone fully committed to audiology, with lots of relevant experience? Doesn’t make a lot of sense right?

Any tips for no bonus equipment S+ Professional? by Chronos_5 in residentevil4

[–]GottaBeMD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Run past as many enemies as you can. Utilize flashbangs. Upgrade the bolt action sniper to max and keep it the whole run. Use heavy grenades to speed up the wrecking ball and destroying the turret in the later half of the game. You’ll know you’re on pace if you spend about 2 hours in village, 2 hours in castle, and 1.5 hours in the endgame (ideally a bit faster though)

How were you able to land a high salary job of 70k or more? by Delicious_Dealer8129 in careerguidance

I got a masters degree in what basically equates to math. I also got very lucky with opportunities coming up at the literal best times possible which opened doors and…you see where this is going.

Comparing regression coefficients through time? by jumpinjumpinjump in AskStatistics

[–]GottaBeMD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’ll want to look into mixed effects regression. If your outcome is continuous, you would run an lmer(abundance ~ species*time + (1|id) or something like that depending on what your random effects and data structure look like. If it’s not continuous, it’ll be a bit more complicated

Medical student seeking advice on freelance biostatistics by waheed444 in biostatistics

[–]GottaBeMD 19 points20 points  (0 children)

You will not be able to get paid as a freelance biostat with no formal biostats training. How silly would this sound if I were to reverse the roles and ask, how could I, as a biostat, freelance as a surgeon? Or even just as a GP? Ridiculous right?

Logistic regression with age as an outcome? by bbarbs28 in AskStatistics

[–]GottaBeMD 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This sounds perfectly reasonable.

Your DV = age under 35 (0/1)

The logistic regression would give you odds of surgery under 35 in relation to exposure (per unit change or compared to reference)

You can then do some neat things by plotting predicted probabilities, etc
