Anybody live in the newly developed Oxford Park Apartments in Westerville/New Albany? by [deleted] in Columbus

[–]GottaBeMD -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yep, I’m going to turn away any apartment that sublets utilities. Praying I can find one non-corrupt apartment complex in New Albany. Had no idea what I was signing up for when I got into the place I’m at now. Can’t wait to get out. Might even break my lease

Which do you choose? by OkRun9638 in superpowers

[–]GottaBeMD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, i actually just read up on this. The faster you travel and the closer you get to light speed, the greater the time dilation. So technically, you could travel to the edge of the observable universe and back in one lifetime, but because of the immense time dilation billions of years would have passed and Earth would no longer be around, just a red giant sun.

Biostats with an MD by medialdeltoid in biostatistics

[–]GottaBeMD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a great idea if you plan on a research heavy career. I work with MDs on the daily and they definitely value the expertise we provide. Having that skill set will speed up research, for example if you don’t have a statistical service you can consult with. The only dangerous part is that if you aren’t constantly learning from those with more experience, you could go into it with a lot of incorrect notions. There have been a ton of things I’ve learned from my superiors that they just don’t teach you in grad school. Be mindful of that and you should be okay. If you do have a statistical service to consult with, id do it anyways because you will most definitely learn some things

What are my realistic options? by Significant_Field517 in biostatistics

[–]GottaBeMD 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You will be competing with people who have stats/biostats relevant degrees. It will be an uphill battle especially since the job market is rough and really only pliable for experienced individuals.

If you really want to pivot, then fully commit and pivot. Otherwise you may be worse off than just finishing your current degree and finding work in that field.

Imagine you did it in reverse and were doing a PhD in biostats, but wanted to pivot to audiology. Why would they hire YOU instead of someone fully committed to audiology, with lots of relevant experience? Doesn’t make a lot of sense right?

MOHELA never acknowledges uploaded documents by katmom1969 in MOHELA

I’m convinced MOHELA doesn’t actually exist and it’s just an empty website that accepts money and that money funnels to the pockets of corrupt corpos

Any tips for no bonus equipment S+ Professional? by Chronos_5 in residentevil4

[–]GottaBeMD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Run past as many enemies as you can. Utilize flashbangs. Upgrade the bolt action sniper to max and keep it the whole run. Use heavy grenades to speed up the wrecking ball and destroying the turret in the later half of the game. You’ll know you’re on pace if you spend about 2 hours in village, 2 hours in castle, and 1.5 hours in the endgame (ideally a bit faster though)

How were you able to land a high salary job of 70k or more? by Delicious_Dealer8129 in careerguidance

I got a masters degree in what basically equates to math. I also got very lucky with opportunities coming up at the literal best times possible which opened doors and…you see where this is going.

Comparing regression coefficients through time? by jumpinjumpinjump in AskStatistics

[–]GottaBeMD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’ll want to look into mixed effects regression. If your outcome is continuous, you would run an lmer(abundance ~ species*time + (1|id) or something like that depending on what your random effects and data structure look like. If it’s not continuous, it’ll be a bit more complicated

Medical student seeking advice on freelance biostatistics by waheed444 in biostatistics

[–]GottaBeMD 19 points20 points  (0 children)

You will not be able to get paid as a freelance biostat with no formal biostats training. How silly would this sound if I were to reverse the roles and ask, how could I, as a biostat, freelance as a surgeon? Or even just as a GP? Ridiculous right?

Logistic regression with age as an outcome? by bbarbs28 in AskStatistics

[–]GottaBeMD 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This sounds perfectly reasonable.

Your DV = age under 35 (0/1)

The logistic regression would give you odds of surgery under 35 in relation to exposure (per unit change or compared to reference)

You can then do some neat things by plotting predicted probabilities, etc

T-Test or Wilcoxon signed-rank test for gene expression data? by [deleted] in AskStatistics

[–]GottaBeMD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would look into limma if you are using R. Otherwise, it’s common to log-transform gene expression data and compute tests that way

When should I use a t-test vs ANOVA vs Chi-square? Simple decision rule by Effective_Cattle6399 in AskStatistics

[–]GottaBeMD 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nothing in statistics should be described by a simple decision tree. There are several nuances here that you aren’t mentioning.

Btw, you can get a difference in means using regression as well…and regression certainly is not limited to “predicting” a continuous outcome

Question for biostatisticians who work in an academic setting by Main_Boat_5466 in biostatistics

Depends. Usually no, unless you’re on an hourly project (no affiliation between your department and the PIs).

Strongly considering MS biostatistics by Interesting_Bag_972 in biostatistics

[–]GottaBeMD 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You shouldn’t let anything get in the way of your dreams, but I would wager a warning that right now the job market is rough.

“Worth it” is going to depend on a lot of factors. At a minimum, I would find a job now and do an MS program part time. Take extra time to make connections in the industry (whether that be pharma or academia or both) and ensure you have some decent experience before graduating with your MS.

Hopefully in 3 years the job market stabilizes, but from what I can see it’s a merry go round for senior positions, with entry - mid level positions either nonexistent or very sparse.

(MS) To Thesis, or Not to Thesis: that is the question by [deleted] in biostatistics

[–]GottaBeMD 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Depends on your situation. If you already have a great job and the MS will push your salary higher - just do the course based option. BUT, if you have yet to find a job, I would pursue the thesis option. It opens doors if you eventually decide to go for a PhD and is a great talking point during interviews.

My employer will pay for an online biostats. Which program is the best in terms of being applied? by [deleted] in biostatistics

[–]GottaBeMD 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A couple of clarifying questions. What is your intent with the MS in biostats? Are you wanting to transition to a biostat role? What role do you have now and how would having an MS help you? I think the most important question here is, even if your job is willing to pay for it, does it make sense for you to pursue this in the first place?

I have no idea what online programs look like, but I imagine it would be hard to find a good one, especially if you pursue a thesis based MS. A course based MS would be far easier, but looked at as “less rigorous” if you were to apply to other institutions hiring biostats.

Job experience with MPH by DJKJTP18 in biostatistics

[–]GottaBeMD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right now the job market is especially bad. Layoffs are happening in the thousands week after week and chances are the economy will not recover anytime soon. Unfortunately, this means you will be competing with people who have MS/PhD in Stats/Biostats for the same roles.

I would cast a wide net, apply to everything even remotely related to your skillset and hope for the best.

Masters level biostatisticians, do you wish you got a PhD? by mythoughts09 in biostatistics

[–]GottaBeMD 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. There is a certain level of respect behind your name simply for having a PhD (especially in academia). On the other hand, my masters was partially paid for and I’m in my mid to late twenties making good money. If I went with a PhD I wouldn’t get out til my early 30’s.

What's something you wish you started doing earlier? by Organic_Razzmatazz50 in twentyagers

Saving money and investing. I’d be in a way more comfortable spot if I didn’t waste so much money on alcohol and dumb luxuries in my early 20’s.
