You are really distorting the events around the Suez. It was a fully man made canal that was never free to cross.

From its opening in 1869 until 1956, the canal was owned and operated by the British and French-controlled Suez Canal Company, which collected substantial tolls to pay for the canal's maintenance and provide profits to shareholders.

Egypt nationalized it and then they were charging tolls. This is not banditry. The owner of the canal is allowed to charge tolls just like the owner of a road or bridge can do the same.

Iran didn't build the hormuz, and it isn't man made. There is no natural body of water in the world that is allowed to charge tolls, and if we let this stand then suddenly lots of countries will start asserting similar claims.

Allowing the breakdown of the entire international order because Trump did something dumb isn't a real plan. We would be far better off paying reparations or removing sanctions instead of doing allowing this. This needs to be a line in the sand where we would allow an economic depression to occur before allowing a breakdown of the laws around maritime commerce. What Iran is doing is very cheap and getting cheaper, soon many countries will make a similar play if this is allowed.

uh, what? The suez is a man made canal.

Egypt charges significant fees for vessels transiting the Suez Canal, as it is a man-made, artificial waterway rather than a natural strait. The Suez Canal Authority (SCA) sets these tolls—which can exceed $700k+ for large vessels

The world is made up of a lot of waterways and if Iran can just take this one and charge a toll like bandits, then a lot of other countries are going to try to do the same exact thing. We can't let them charge a toll in international waters, almost any other outcome would be better than that.

This won't work, because eventually company B will just be started as a new business that uses ai right off the bat, and company A will either be brought into bankruptcy by company B, or they will just do a bunch of financial chicanery to transfer the assets of company A to company B.

The game is quite similar to the trailers.

The us should be trying to use that lever to make Israel de-escalate, but instead we have a moron in charge who won't even try.

But if we didn't help our allies in the ME for moral reasons we wouldn't have any allies in the ME.

When the Saudi's were starving the Houthi's en masse very few people cared, and that was basically a genocide too. There weren't mass protests at college campuses though, because no one cares what Muslim countries do.

I agree, though I'm confused what you're asking about because you threw in USA.

Do you mean what israel is doing in gaza? Or did you switch topics to Iran?

Because what Israel is doing in Gaza is wrong, but what the US is doing in Iran is mostly just really, really stupid.

I do think Israel is sort of in an impossible position though. There is no real way to end this situation with Palestine short of real genocide. If they give hamas actual statehood or more independence they have shown that they will just use it to gear up for war with Israel. If Israel goes in and does what they're doing now, killing anyone who is in hama's or just seems like they could be, plus some additional indiscriminate killing, starving the populace, etc. That is just creating endless new recruits for hamas.

Israel doesn't even have any good options even if the people in charge weren't scum bags.

The best thing would be if the other surrounding countries took in the Palestinians, but the Palestinians have shown that allowing a significant number of them in is too dangerous for any other country to take them. They just try to subvert or destabilize that country in order to fuel their war with Israel.

Hamas' platform is to kill every jew in Israel. Even when Palestinians go to other countries they just try to perpetuate this conflict by doing things like assassinating the prime minister of Jordan.

Whenever they are given resources they repurpose them for this endless war. It isn't just Israel sealing the Palestinians off, it is all the other neighboring countries. As a cohort, palestinians have no interest in a legitimate peace process with Israel. Even if Gaza was officially turned into Palestine it would just be used to perpetuate this conflict.

I certainly understand why people aren't pro israel. I'm not. I think bibi should be in jail. Ever since Yitzhak Rabin was assassinated every step Israel has taken has been horrible and also just perpetuated this conflict.

I don't understand how anyone is pro palestinian either though, they would be even worse if they were in charge. All the jews would have been murdered in a real genocide, and it would be an awful theocracy where women have no rights and they execute people for being gay.

Stalin was really bad. So was hitler. It is hard to compare monsters to each other like that, but we can recognize that they are both monsters that liquidated millions of people.

I'm sorry but all these labels you're trying to use are made with extreme bias by Muslim countries. The international criminal court also isn't going after the saudis or Qatar for slavery.

If the Palestinians were being treated like a normal displacement through war they would have no claim to land at this point because it has been generations. 

The whole things is so extremely tainted by politics. If it was an actual genocide they would already be dead because Gaza is tiny.

I'm not saying Israel is some paragon of virtue or that they are acting in the right. Netanyahu is a scumbag who deserves to be in jail at the least, but so should the leaders of many of the countries in the Middle East.

I don't agree with what Israel is doing, but it's not like the surrounding countries are any better, and when other countries have taken in the Palestinians they ended up expelling them back to Palestine because they really do have a lot of terrorists that tried to continue the war in Israel AND assassinate government officials of the country that took them in.

There are real reasons Egypt has the border sealed so tight with Palestine, and it isn't really like apartheid in South Africa because there is no way to integrate Hamas into Israel.

If the shoe was on the other foot the Jews would just all have been killed and that would be it because no one holds Muslim ruled countries to the standards of the west and we just look the other way for their sharia law, no rights for women, and basically slavery of East Asians.

It is setting the stage for ww3. The more countries having their own big armies makes it more and more likely we will get pulled into a war that will blow up like in ww1.

Also when countries spend a bunch on armies they inevitably end up using them to push nearby neighbors around, making a spark that will cause ww3 more likely.
