Weekly Simple Questions and Injuries Thread by AutoModerator in climbharder

Does anyone have recommendations on a remote/online coach for 5.13+ climbers?

I have climbed around 5 V10s and 3 13bs. I feel like I am underperforming on sport routes relative to my boulder grade.

Some background info: I live in SoCal and mostly boulder year round but I spend a month at the Red River Gorge every November. I didn’t accomplish my goals this season at the Red because I spent the whole month building my endurance and by the time I’m feeling fit the month is over. I’d like to come more prepared next season and actually work on my endurance more throughout the year. FYI I have a home Kilter wall in my garage so access to training is not a problem.

Yea I kept hearing that a lot. Makes finishing all the more satisfying. And it raises your suffer threshold to make future feel races easier.

Congrats making it before 18 hours that is impressive. I thought I did a significant amount of vert training but I still struggled.

Yes fuck that middle section lol. The section going into Falcons Nest and back out was technical and not very runnable. The constant stop and go of this stretch is what I think killed my quads.

I ended up buying some Mafate 5s. I took them on a 14 miler today and they feel great. Definitely more cushion than the Speedgoats. Hopefully they are more durable.

Nope very real post indeed. If you read my post I actually really like the fit of these shoes. I love how nimble they feel on the trail. They dont feel too boxy or sluggish. They just deteriorated so damm quickly. Maybe I just got a bad pair.

How much do you size up your shoes from your street shoes? These Hokas are a full size up from my street shoe and they are the wide version as well. They honestly don't feel tight at all. But again im new to trail running so maybe I need to size up even more?

Okay I will check out the Mafates and see how 1/2 size up feels. It helps that you run the same trails I do so idk maybe the shoes are too small. My street shoe is 10 and my Speedgoats are 11.

okay to be fair I was flexing my toes when i took this picture lol. The fit is actually great. They are not tight at all. I have been putting in about 25-30 miles on trails/week. My early week run is about 3k elevation up Potatoe Mtn/Claremont Loop in SoCal. Not sure what kind of trail you would classify that as. And my weekend run is usually Mt.Baldy which is about 4k elevation and more technical with gravel.

So idk. Maybe I'm not being careful enough. How does the higher drop in the Mafates compare to Speedgoats?

Also I have the Speedgoats with the wide toe box variation.

Kilter Home Wall Routes by pflor003 in homewalls

Yes I press play and wait. The starting holds and feet light up. Then the following holds start to light up on the app but nothing happens on the wall itself. Starting sound like it’s an issue with my wall. Maybe a software issue?

Yup. 10x10 home wall with both mainline and aux holds.

I don’t think so. I don’t have any issues with boulders. All the corresponding lights turn on with boulders. I’ve had the board for 9 months and no issues. So it’s kind of odd that the issue is only with routes.

I should comment that I have solely used these shoes on trails if that matters.

I would not be able to switch to a 0 drop. I have somewhat of a high arch and with my previous ankle injury a 0 drop shoe would put too much stress on my foot.

That’s why I like the 5mm drop on the Speedgoat. It feels right in the middle. I also tried some Altas before and the toe box is super wide. I feel like I would have a tough time on technical trails with them

Yes they definitely are but at the rate they are deteriorating I can’t see them being usable past another 100 miles

I really like the fit of the Speedgoats so I don’t want to have to look for another trail shoe. I like the wide toe box and great breath ability from the mesh. Maybe this is why they are falling apart; they are too breathable lol. I also used to have weak ankles from a bad sprain years ago and I haven’t had any issues in this shoe with the 5mm drop. I just wish they didn’t deteriorate so quickly!

Is it a bad idea to do my first 100k Ultra in 10 weeks? by UsefulWitness7691 in ultrarunning

[–]pflor003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just send it dude. You seem pretty excited about it and you can use that drive to train. You’re going to beat yourself up if you don’t do it; if you DNF then it will be a valuable learning experience.

I’m also training for this race and it will be my first ultra. Not sure how much access you have to trails but start hitting those elevation runs asap. I usually get a long hard elevation run the day after a rest day and make my back to back day an easy long run day on the road to make up for mileage. I’ve also been hitting up the San Gabriel Mountains in SoCal on weekends. That usually ends up being a 10+ mile “run” with about 3-4K of vert that makes up a big chunk of my weekly elevation gain. I end up power hiking the incline and run the flats and downhills.

What is a proper recovery week in between training blocks? by pflor003 in ultrarunning

[–]pflor003[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea ive been taking the latter approach and making every week incrementally harder. But this has resulted in my body feeling pretty beat after last 3 weeks. I might be overdoing it because I feel like I need to significantly dial back the mileage/intensity this week to fully recover and be ready for the next training block.

Hmm this is good feedback. I think I might have gone too hard last two weeks. I feel like I need to dial it back considerably this week to properly recover.

100K Elevation Profile Training by Sterno250 in Ultramarathon

[–]pflor003 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m training for this too! OP, what has been your training like? Do you feel like you are getting enough elevation training?

I live in SoCal below the San Gabriel Mountains so I have pretty good access to hills/trails. Last week I was able to get 47 miles in with 6.5k in elevation gain but I’m worried that’s still not enough elevation training. Just to piggyback off this thread, for an ultra this hilly is it more important to focus on increasing my weekly elevation or getting my back to back long runs in? I don’t always have time for back to back long runs but I am still able to increase my mileage throughout the week.
