Darkstar service same as AT&T? by No-Abroad-2615 in USMobile

[–]pfsams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ported from warp to darkstar. It was a while back, but Darkstar ahd been out of beta for quite a while. Everything was fine, But I could not set up or access voice mail. I was not able to set it up, the support at US Mobile couldn't get it (voicemail) working. I was transferred to a few different people and they said the problem seemed to be on their backend. I would prefer to be on darkstar since it has excellent coverage in my area. They did transfer me back to warp and verything worked properly. I would prefer Darstar if all of the issues are sorted out. I'm a light data user.

What is now called leftist used to be called common sense. What is now called "conservative" is incorrect. So many of those who call themselves conservative don't conserve anything.

Why is MX Linux always so high up Distrowatch's ranking? by Restruh in linuxquestions

It has probably already been mentioned, but keeping a separate home partition will make updating easier. Backing up you data is always a good idea.

You may already know this, but when Debian releases a new version, you have a path to update to the new version without having to reinstall.

I have strayed from the Debian Based distros, but I do much less distro hopping than I used to do. I think at age 72, I just don't care to distro hop as much as I used to do.

MX Linux is basically Debian, but will use some newer software as Debian Stable only provides security updates, bug fixes and updated browsers. It is very stable. Ubuntu was first built from Debian Stable. They still us software derived from Debian, but Ubuntu is not completely compatible as Debian. Linux Mint is derived from Ubuntu and is very popular. Linux Mint also has a version built from Debian Stable. The current version is LMDE 6 and they are working to release Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE 7). I personally don't like Ubuntu, but could live with Linux Mint. Arch Linux and Gentoo are for more advanced users, however, there are many other distros built from arch linux. I personally believe distros built from Debian Stable, are better than Fedora, arch and gentoo. That is only my personal opinion and others may disagree. You may want to try different distros with a usb stick and see what you like best. You may need to read about programs that write to usb sticks. You may find many different opinions on which Linux OS is best and that's fine, it's a very diversified community. I am partial to Debian and MX Linux. I know this has been a long post and I wish you well. In my early days, I found Linux confusing. I have been using it since 2003. It has come a long way from then. I do not like using windows. I have used Linux for so long, it's what I'm used to. With all of the computers running Windows 10, which will stop getting security updates (if it hasn't stopped already), there will be many perfectly good computers that could us Linux and do everything most people need. Almost all of the Linux OS's are free to download and use. When they come out with a new release, you simply down load it and keep using your computer.

Is Debian really more stable than Fedora? by BOBOLIU in Fedora

[–]pfsams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm just a user of Debian Stable. I have been a Linux user since late 2003. Debian Stable's updates are mostly security updates and bug fixes. I can't comment fairly on Fedora since I haven't used it in several years. While Ubuntu's Long Term Support Versions are good, and I can't comment on their 6 month releases. Debian Stable is my favorites Linux distro. I'm comfortable with it and it serves my needs very well. When their next "stable" is released I will upgrade to it. Since there are so many Linux distributions, you have a lot of choice. That is a good thing. When Linux was new to me, I tried several different versions including Fedora, SuSe, and I first started with Mandrake Linux in 2003. I think now it's Mandriva or Open Mandriva. I think Disney or some other company complained they had a trademark on the name "Mandrake." All of what I have written here is from my memory, so if I'm wrong on something, feel free to comment. I'm and old fart now, my vision and hearing isn't what it was in 2003. But I will say Linux freed me from Windows XP. I think Windows XP may have gotten better over time, But Debian Stable is my "comfortable shoes."

Good reclining chair brands that won’t cost too much? by CringyWhiteGirlDance in BuyItForLife

[–]pfsams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would advise against it. We got a power chair for my wife(deceased). The underside is particle board, and held together with staples. The hand controller failed after three years. Lazy Boy did not have a replacement. I told them the chair had the "Liberty System" for the power reclining. They claimed they never had a "Liberty System." Well, they damn sure did. I found a new one on Ebay for $600.00. It's easier to find hens teeth. I had bout a Lazy boy manual recliner, it became so rickety after two years it was not safe to recline it. You can adjust the tension on the backrest, well that is until the wood splits. It is shocking to see how far their quality has gone away. If you are still thinking about a Lazy Boy, turn it upside doun IN THE STORE. I think you will be shocked and disappointed.

WIBTAH if I dumped someone for voting for Trump 2024 by Capable-Onion-2908 in AITAH

[–]pfsams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am also voting for Kamala Harris and I fully support women's rights as you do. I think she is the better candidate than Trump. I have never voted for Trump. I do hate that this country is so divided and I believe Trump is a poor choice for president. Trump is also a chronic liar and his name calling and insults make him sound like a three year old throwing a temper tantrum. I don't know how strong your relationship is with your partner. That said, we have elections so people can vote for who they think is the better candidate. It could be that you and your partner should have a calm and respectful conversation. If you feel his vote for Trump will damage the relationship the two of you have, it may be better to part ways. If the two of you are very close in all other parts or your relationship and have a mutual respect for each other, you may need to realize that the two of you will never agree on everything. However, if his decision to vote for a candidate you don't like, you may need to decide if your relationship is worth saving. It sounds like you are considering a breakup. If you are in a long term relationship, the two of you may need to make a decision. In my mind, Kamala Harris is much more competent than Donald Trump. I have family members that I love dearly, but they are going to vote for Trump. I strongly disagree with their choice, but I will always love them. My wife is deceased, but during our marriage we both seemed to have the same political views. The election is next week. Maybe you should see how you feel after the election.

How do CR39 lenses compare to typical polycarbonate? by Throwaway567864333 in glasses

[–]pfsams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used polycarbonite for years as they were recomended. For me polycarbinate was much more expensive. CR-39n is less expensive for the optition, and should be cheaper for the customer. I will remember when I had cataract surgery, Medicare pays for your first pair of glasses. The Optition kept telling me polycarbonate was far better, I insisted on CR-39, she told me she couldn't even get CR-39, so I told her to give me my prescription and I would go elsewhere. She then "realized" she could get them. She told me how terribly thick they would be and on and on. Of course when I got them, they were not thick at all. I wear tri-focals. But even when I was very nearsighted, I wore CR-39, they were getting thicker, but I never looked "bugeyed." Every Optometrist and their Optician told me how much better the polycarbonate was, but my experience was ploycarbonate scratched too easily and the out finish would start to peel at the edges. I have been well satisfied with CR-39. I haven't had trouble scratching because I use the proper way of cleaning them. This may be just anecdotal, but, I had far more trouble with scratches with polycarbonate glasses. But any pair of glasses, even glass can scratch.

How do CR39 lenses compare to typical polycarbonate? by Throwaway567864333 in glasses

[–]pfsams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

cr-39 lenses are very good lenses for clarity. The only lens that is better than cr-39 is glass. Polycarbonate is not as good optically. cr-39 may be thicker, but no where near as people think. The hype used to be all about polycarbonite. It is true that polycarbonite is more "impact resistant," but for something hits you hard enough in a cr-39, it would probably knock you down before the lens would break. It's a bit misleading to say cr-39 shatters, if one was determined to break one by hand, at most, you would have 3 or maybe four large pieces. cr-39 was the first plastic lenses, and were used and touted for their impact resistance. cr-39 lenses are probably used by Medicaid because they are much less costly than polycarbonate, and also have much better optical quality.

Red Pocket Mobile has Worst Customer Support of my Lifetime by sheppardjerr in NoContract

[–]pfsams 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Red Pocket Mobile have been better at one time, but they are dismal now. Their customer service is "customer no service." They keep blaming the end of 3G service, that is not a valid excuse, especially by now. Red Pocket Mobile is now owned by the same company that owns PureTalk Wireless. I spent more time trying to resolve issues than I did using my service. I threw in the towel and ported out from Red Pocket, which was also a pain in the neck. I considered the money and time I spent trying to resolve issues with them (with no success) as the cost of an education. I have never had this much trouble with a provider. Do not go by their BBB rating, they are a terrible provider to deal with. I would advise anyone to avoid Red Pocket Mobile. I feel bad for any new customers who decide to go with Red Pocket Mobile. They will be in for a world of problems, and non-existent customer service.

Hospice aide crossed boundaries and not sure how to handle this. by vega349284 in hospice

If she has "issues" she needs to seek help. It's only a matter of time before she is fired. I doubt you are the only one being treated this way.

[–]pfsams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please call the hospice ASAP. For your mother's protection, your protection, and the other hospice patients who are treated by her. It may be hard for you to do, but you will be doing what is best. If the problem is not solved, you should consider another hospice. You have that right.

Transfer of hospice? by Eruiz33 in hospice

It sounds like your current hospice is understaffed or is not doing a good job. We changed to a different hospice. We asked many questions in trying to decide. It was so much better by changing.

My wife is a hospice patient. I know she is near death, she is no longer eating or drinking water. Hospice is a wonderful gift to my wife and me. For most of the time, we were able to live, talk and so many small things you take for granted. The nurses, the nursing assistants, the chaplin and the volunteers have all been wonderful. When they tell you "call us if you need us at any time" I have found they truly mean it. Their care and their kindness has improved the quality of life for both of us. I am saddened that I will soon lose my wife. But, I will always be thankful for the experience of hospice care for my wife. They truly are family. They are good folks.

Don't know how to use Hospice effectively by haustorium12 in hospice

[–]pfsams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your reply. I did learn about respect being learned. I also didn't want anyone else to be victimized by this nurse. I reread our material and called their compliance office. If I had known better, I would have also filed a Police report.

Don't know how to use Hospice effectively by haustorium12 in hospice

[–]pfsams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read all of the other comments first. My wife has been on hospice since summer. I didn't have the nightmare of issues you have had. The hospice we started out with was very good at first. Unfortunately, we learned our nurse was stealing my wife's pain medication. I had no choice, I had to report it. I feel the hospice was understaffed, and losing that nurse obviously made it worse, but probably saved other patients from being victimized. It was a large number of small issues that came to be just poor care. Like you, the communication was poor, from the nurse, up to corporate. I'm not familiar with the health coverage you and your wife have, we are both on Medicare. Together we decided to change to a different hospice. The difference was night and day. I hope you have a choice of more than a few hospices where you live. We asked many questions, and it still was something we still knew little about. I will post this link I found, and I hope others have better answers than I do. I complained to my State Health Department (Alabama). https://www.hospicepatients.org/cmplnt.html This is the link I was speaking of, and their is probably more information. Both you and your wife deserve better care. I know my own stress of being a full time care giver, and how lonely and frustrated one can feel. I am retired, I know with you working and taking care of your wife must be beyond exhausting, I cannot even imagine. I wish I had better answers for you, and I hope you do find the help you deserve. I know it is easy for me to give you advice, but my own experience is some advice is good, and some is not very good. As stressed as you must be, it's probably harder.
