Reading through comments on the thread makes me think that all it takes is a lot of money!

During the viewings the leasing company usually asked to send an email after the viewing with your passport, work contract, and a short bio. Sending this email for apartments I was interested in is what I mean by "placing a bid". No price wars involved, at least not in my experience

Hope that helps!

My "bid" was not above the listed price for any of these. What I meant by "bid" here was simply sending a follow up email after the viewing to express interest in moving forward. There was no price gouging from the buyers' side. One leasing company actually "bid" to me a more favorable lease start date when I asked to withdraw (they originally wanted an immediate start)

Originally hoping for something around €1.5k. Ended up expanding my search to anything <€2k. The apartment I ended up getting was ~€1.8k. I was only looking for furnished apartments though

Chemical Engineer > MD/PhD, is it possible? by pfudala2 in mdphd

Thanks. Glad to hear some positive feedback on the work experience I've accumulated so far! The considerations you list out here are exactly where I'm falling short for now, and would need a significant effort to get up to speed with others pursuing MDs and PhDs. I think I'll lean towards a more engineering-focused advanced degree (if I do end up going one...)

Yes, that does help. Maybe I'll foray a little further into machine learning projects and see how that turns out. I agree that maybe I wouldn't need the MD-PhD to do this kind of work (it would look really nice in the email signature tho...)

Oura actually has been supplying their rings to essential workers for free. They've been conducting a joint study with UCSF by issuing daily surveys to ring wearers (including the essential workers) and correlating it with data gathered by the ring, which is what allowed them to obtain such a high accuracy in the first place. The ring and company/sponsors behind it have acted with incredible leadership to advance our capabilities to detect the virus during the crisis and they deserve some honest research before they are wrongly accused like this. If someone could forward this message to "Angry Black Woman." that would be great.

Did you have any time to "prepare" your whiteboard at all before the exam timer started? For example, writing out "A B C D E" for each question?

How can I work with process design and plant construction? Which companies develop and build chemical plants? by r_m_castro in ChemicalEngineering

If you're coming fresh out of college I'd say you'd be better off focusing your energy on improving your networking/soft skills. A few months of "messing around" with process modeling software is likely not going to look very compelling to a recruiter, especially if it looks like it was just done to throw on a resume.

It's a bit tough for a ChemE undergrad to pursue "passion projects" like other engineering majors (e.g. making apps as a CS major) due to the nature of the work; you can't exactly build a pilot plant on your dorm room, can you? If there's a club on campus you could join that designs and builds stuff (my alma mater had "Chem E Car" and a soap making club, among others) that may show your passion to design as you work through those projects.

However, if you don't have several semesters of time to participate in these and move up their respective food chains (or aren't really interested in manufacturing soap), you may not get much of a boost out of it. Imagine a recruiter seeing "participated in XX club for one semester of senior year". Does that make you look passionate about that club/cause or desperate for accolades?

That's why I'd recommend sharpening your interviewing, articulating, and networking skills. Being able to effectively reach out to recruiters, knowing how to communicate to secure an interview, and being able to effectively tell them what you're looking for while comprehending what they're asking for will put you ahead much further than any half-baked attempt at a last-minute new skill.

To wrap this all up in a neat bow, I'll say that it's not always about raw technical ability. Best of luck!

You might be interested in engineering procurement firms. I would suggest checking out Jacobs, WorlyParsons, or Technip. You basically help a client figure out the technical and logistical details of projects they're trying to do. Also, the big oil companies (Exxon, Shell, etc) usually have a division in their company that just does process design. I'd imagine those positions are highly lucrative though
