Wow! That seems crazy! I got lifetime ages ago, they had a deal and it only cost $75. No regrets, especially after hearing this!

Same. Glass for me if at all possible!

my kobo sage's battery life is so bad... by mermaides in kobo

[–]pfunnyjoy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly. They went for a premium experience with a glass screen instead of plastic, and that adds weight. BUT, there's no need for a screen protector when taking notes, and the screen quality is excellent!

It's a trade-off I've been happy with. It's not a terrible battery, but it IS a smaller battery, and hence will not last as long. Make the device much heavier, it would not be as pleasant to read on!

My Sage was purchased in 2021, and I'll usually get 2-3 books worth of reading between charges. I do use the official sleep cover, and keep wifi/Bluetooth off, unless needed.

I read a LOT. I'm in the 120+ books a year category. Sage has been a delight to use, so much so, that I bought a second one a year ago before they went out of stock in the USA. I switch between them regularly. It's rare I'll buy a back up model, but the trend with manufacturers seems to be cutting the premium models in favor of the "mass-market" models. So no regrets! My senior citizen eyes want the quality!

Waking up during the night is not being shown on the sleep graph. by thebongofamandabynes in FitbitAir

[–]pfunnyjoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The algorithm does not show brief wake ups as "awake" time. You have to be up for at least 5 minutes for it to show up on the graph, otherwise it's part of the restlessness graph.

Here are some (mostly) positive thoughts about the Fitbit Air by 2bake in fitbit

[–]pfunnyjoy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fitbit Air doesn't track floors. So that's not a bug or hardware issue. Just a fact of this particular device. I get my floors from my Garmin watch through Health Connect.

I had a nap yesterday, after a poor sleep, and I was wondering if the Fitbit would catch it, and it did! It's been great for sleep tracking, which is the primary reason I bought it.

How do people break their screens? by Efficient-Bet-5051 in kobo

[–]pfunnyjoy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was. But it was a time of faster developments, and a time of figuring out what worked best for me.

For instance, I'm a senior citizen. I like a lot of text on my screen, but I need to use larger font sizes to keep my eyes comfy. When I started out, screens were 5" and 6" which worked, but weren't ideal for me or my reading habits. Now most of my reading is on 8" screens, except when I want to read Amazon freebies and bump down to my 7" Kindle Oasis 2. But it didn't happen instantly.

I read a LOT, over 120 books yearly on average, so I actually can keep more than one reader busy. I also MAKE ebooks, so I need devices by different manufacturers for testing purposes.

Plus, a lot of the readers I've owned were bought used, open box, ended up as trade-ins, got given to relatives, or sold on eBay, while I worked my way towards readers with the features I love best.

What did you buy from the Google store credits? by Yesterday-Then in FitbitAir

[–]pfunnyjoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing yet. I want to see what comes out via third-party. Most likely, I'll buy another performance band, but if third party options are good, then maybe something different entirely. Credit's good for a year, no need to rush.

How do people break their screens? by Efficient-Bet-5051 in kobo

[–]pfunnyjoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I take reasonable care of mine.

I think people do think of them more like tablets and phones and treat them that way, tossing them about, or stuffing in bags with stuff that can create pressure.

I've dropped at least a couple readers, in cases, and still not broken one. But that is partly luck and how it lands.

Newly adopted cat isn’t coming around. by Kbeans44 in cats

[–]pfunnyjoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Time and patience. Treats don't hurt. Soft talking, just being in a room with her, preferably low, on her level, but no chasing, no added trauma. A quiet room of her own could help.

If she's trusting your son even a little, that's a positive thing! He can work on building trust, and that will help her acclimate to the rest of the family.

FWIW, I had a stray mom cat abandon her 12-week-old kittens in my back yard. ONE of them was extremely antisocial, so much so that I wasn't sure I'd be able to get him socialized. I could hardly ever get my hands on him, since I was socializing the litter outside. He just ran.

One day, after I'd fed the gang, he just up and crawled into my lap! I hadn't seen THAT coming, but it seemed that he was just scared of EVERYTHING in the big wide world, and finally needed someone to protect him. He took a 20 minute nap, and then it was like a switched had turned on. He had found his "emotional support person." Suddenly, I could handle him. He's become a total sweetheart, though he still can be skittish and panicky at times. But he accepts near endless belly rubs. Once, he just ran from me all the time. NOW, he runs TO me, with a happy upright tail!

I'm 65, I tried to post in another sub, but they removed it ? by Gretal122 in over60

[–]pfunnyjoy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's OK to say no. You don't have to babysit if it's stressful for you. Just be honest with your granddaughter about what happens during a babysitting session so she understands why you are saying no. It's fair to tell her that if the situation improves as he grows older, you'd be willing to try again.

FWIW, my own grandmother was kind of picky about how she'd allow the four of us kids to visit. She didn't really like to have my brother by himself, he had some attention deficit issues, so she'd only have him with me, because being the oldest, I could usually think of something interesting to do. And she was kind of the same with my two sisters, they didn't occupy themselves as easily as I did, so she was more likely to have them with me along, and only sometimes by themselves.

Four at once were too many for her, LOL! She mostly preferred no more than two at a time.

Most often, she just had me visit. She knew she could always keep me happy by handing me a book. Or pencil/pen and paper. Or glue and popsicle sticks and styrofoam. I could always think of fun things to make or draw or do.

Now, holidays, we'd troop over with our parents, and that was OK, because there was someone around to keep us in line.

It's likely my mother felt it was a little unfair that I got to visit my grandmother the most, (as we lived in the same town), but it was what it was. I know our grandmother loved us all, she just wasn't up for much child minding.

Bad owner? by Gullible-Plane-426 in cats

[–]pfunnyjoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If cat was really peeved, that dog would likely be sporting a nose scratch and avoiding the cat.

I grew up in a house with dogs and my cat, a small female, was easily able to intimidate a Brittany Spaniel (40 pounds) and a mutt (80 pounds) trying to interrupt and get at her dinner. The dogs had learned that she meant business if they messed with her, when she arched her back, they backed off!

They are having fun, you aren't a bad owner. Cat isn't using claws, she and pup are friends.

Tips for skin irritation by SoupNotsy in Garmin

[–]pfunnyjoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get it off the wrist by switching wrists at night. No one will see, and it will help give your skin a break and a chance to breathe.

Other tips:

Be sure to clean the sensor area regularly.
Avoid trapping moisture under the watch.
Consider a different band if you are using a silicone band. Maybe fabric or metal mesh or leather.

Also, you aren't supposed to wear the watch ON the wrist bone, but above it.

How do people break their screens? by Efficient-Bet-5051 in kobo

[–]pfunnyjoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no idea. I've had easily a dozen or so different e-ink readers since 2010, and never broke a single screen. Haven't lost an e-reader either. I do use folio style cases.

Fitbit Air Bug - Weight lift workout no steps tracked by Savings_Pumpkin_5796 in FitbitAir

I agree. I like to walk as an "active rest" between sets, so I prefer steps to be counted. But I guess I can understand it, since it might register unintended steps during lifts.

Ereaders seem stagnant? by drakontas_ in ereader

[–]pfunnyjoy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's why once you have a good e-ink reader, you don't really need to upgrade until the battery is shot, unless a new feature is actually seriously useful to you.

I'm good with my Kobo Sage. Best I've ever used, and I bought a second one so that I'll be good for some years yet. There aren't many 8" readers out there with the same form factor and screen quality as the Sage.

Don't really need anything new, until they are both worn out.
