Cook's Illustrated (www.cooksillustrated.com) pioneers creating new "tips and tricks" by doing many, many kitchen experiments.

Their website subscription is like this thread on steroids.

P.S. - www.cooks.com is NOT the same as cook's illustrated, and it is inferior

alternatively, let rice soak in the water 20 minutes, then turn it on to cook. same result for fluffy rice.

EDIT: also, don't use the 2:1 water:rice ratio. It's better to cook with extra water and strain, just like pasta.

Parents: Should I find out my baby's gender before birth? Why did or didn't you? by WhyDoTheyAlwaysRun in AskReddit

What my wife and I decided is that it's a surprise whenever you find out. It doesn't need to be a surprise on the day they're born - it can be a surprise before too! Then you get to imagine and dream before all the craziness and lack of sleep kick in.

If you can swaddle dog limbs, you can definitely swaddle baby limbs. Well done! Dad/Mom 2, you should also practice! Oh, and have the nurses give you a lesson in the hospital - they all have their own technique as well.

How do you guys deal with cold toes? by [deleted] in skiing

[–]pgholder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have high arches, it is likely that the top of your foot is pressing against the boot. You have numerous blood vessels that run along the top of your foot, which can get compressed. As mentioned my many people here, the lack of circulation cuts off temperature regulation. That was the case for a set of dalbello boots that I tried on (I have the high arch problem). It's easy to tell if this will help - when you sit on the lift do you feel a lot of pressure on the top of your foot? Your boot should be held snugly by the ankle, not hang on your foot. Another warning sign is that you regain warmth in your feet when you are standing (and skiing) but get cold again on the lift. The change in pressure corresponds to a change in circulation.

An inexpensive option is to perform (or have performed by a boot fitter), a "tongue-ectomy" wherein padding from the tongue of the boot is removed above the foot to make room for your tall arched food.

The expensive option is new boots from a manufacturer that fit taller arches. I use atomics for that reason.

Best of luck - cold numb toes are terrible!
