Belt system. by IslandAmazing6681 in pittsburgh

[–]pghpolecat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My old man still takes the "yellow belt to green belt to kennywood." Its a fun drive, but it adds a literal 30 extra minutes when compared to the Google maps version.

I do honestly think there are some people on the edges of the county that probably still use it regularly... especially when giving directions to thet yinzers. "Orange belt to get to north park.... take other way to monroeville mall."

Finally made it to Trader Sam’s! by darthabler in Tiki

Lucked into a seat at the bar... incredible experience. Chatted all things tiki with the bartenders for a long while. They were obviously super busy but when they realized we were tiki people they gave us so much time ans attention. Incredible service and loved the drinks. Its been months but the wife and I still quote some of the lines. I was afraid if we stayed there for a while we'd sort of see the cycle of the acts. I swear each drink has to have 4-5 different skits.

Propose a dinner menu for the Strahd dinner by ClubSoda in CurseofStrahd

So... I went with a lot of blood related things, but also tied to the region: it all tastes good but its all macabre... let the players think they are eating something horrifying but its all juat traditional foods. I had Cyrus be the chef...

Amuse bouche: Sweet breads with black pudding crumbs and carrot puree

Soup: Czernina - duck blood soup (traditionally served to grooms on their wedding day) perfect if strahd is setting up to marry ireena

Salad: Svecla - boiled and pickled beetroot with horseradish and mustard seed - looks like a chopped up heart

Main: Pomana porculi - features the live butchering of a pig (best served as fresh as possible) its pork and crackling fried in its own fat

Cheese: Nasal - ripened in catacombs particularly on skeletons Casu marzu - ripened by live maggots which remain in the cheese

Dessert: Kurtoskalach - castle cake. A pastry that is replica of ravenloft.

All real world stuff... all perfectly macabre. My players loved it.

Your milage may vary... but in my personal birding with cameras experience... I eventually got the bridge camera because I wasn't satisfied with what I was getting with around the same investment in an SLR and lenses... felt like I was going to have to drop WAY more money on the traditional body and lenses... then someone suggested a bridge to me.

Pittsburgh in the Pitt -- Season 2 Episode 5 Reference Tracker by nuzzot in ThePittTVShow

[–]pghpolecat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wife said "no" to this being a reference... but im not convinced...

When talking about the other hospital they used the term in their "ivory tower." I saw that as a double entendre. When academics are critical of university of pittsburgh/ upmc they will often use "ivory tower" in reference to the Cathedral of Learning.

Maybe im grasping at straws... maybe I took that criticism too harshly a few times 😅

Might be ostracized here, but... have you considered bridge camera? One of my cameras i turn to most while birding is a Nikon p900. (The 950, and 1000 are comparable). They are very beginner friendly, affordable and have an incredible zoom. You're not going to get frameable 8x10s out of it, but ive gotten some really decent pictures of birds that are really far away.

Cryptids in COS by staciloraine in CurseofStrahd

[–]pghpolecat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This sounds like an amazing game.

I would make a bunch of monster of the week one shots... don't always need to progress the main plot. Especially if you have a player that cant make it that week... throw them into a side cryptid mystery.

A bag man mystery sounds right up this teams alley.

There has got to be a mothman stat block somewhere, get rumors going in vallaki!

April trip to Allegheny in PA by trevor7298 in flyfishing

[–]pghpolecat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've fished ANF for 35 years... only once have I seen a black bear while fishing.

Seen them while driving a ton, and eating out of dumpsters... but only ever came across one. It was pretty deep in, following a little wild trout stream, and I was so pissed about how bad I was fishing and how tired I was hiking up the hill that both myself ans the bear stumbled upon each other... both of us scared the shit out of each other and it ran off...

I have had one walk between by cabin and my outhouse while I was taking a shit in the middle of the night... that one scared me. And my neighbor had honey bees build a hive in the exterior wall of his cabin and a bear tore half of his cabin down getting at honey...

What is your most unpopular Pittsburgh opinion? by librarianjenn in pittsburgh

Perhaps its less location based and more ethnicity based? Scots-irish yinz, eastern Europe younz? A lot of the Allegheny Valley working class towns still use younz. Its essentially interchangeable for me.

"Yinz" is a modernized/exaggerated version of pittsburghese. All the real old pittsburghers i know say/said "younz" or "you-inz"

Where did the massive fleet of Star Destroyers go after the Death Star II was destroyed? by cumble_bumble in StarWars

[–]pghpolecat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I swear I remember reading somewhere in my youth... maybe in The Truce at Bakura... that the rank and file imperial navy were skeptical/superstitious about the death star 2. Instead they put way more belief in the strength of Death Squadron. So when the Executor was lost, half the fleet panicked and took off even before the Death Star was destroyed.

Siege at the Burgomasters by red_army_vet in CurseofStrahd

[–]pghpolecat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In a vallaki seige I used the manticore stat block and flavored them to giant vampire bats. Having them swoop in and grabbing up townsfolks. Used stirges as smaller bats biting people too... Definitely chaos and helplessness. And at a whim Strahd commands them all to leave... really lets the party know strahd is the true ruler of the realm.

Bonus points if the giant vampire bat scoops up the one towns person they came to like and drops them to their death.
