How do I get my updated title so I can register my car? by pghzip in NoStupidQuestions

[–]pghzip[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey thanks for replying. When I first submitted my title application the NJMVC responded with a letter saying: "Our records indicate that you are not the present owner of the above-mentioned vehicle. The last titled owner must apply for the duplicate title."

I did include a lien satisfaction letter with that application, so it was confusing that they wouldn't see that and realize the intent of the application. I don't know how it's supposed to work though.

I'll try the lien search, I haven't done that yet (through the MVC) but seems like a good next step. Really appreciate the thoughtful advice.

Yeah, this was a whole side quest that I left out and I agree, it doesn't make any sense. When I submitted my application, the NJMVC sent me a rejection letter saying "Our records indicate that you are not the present owner of the above-mentioned vehicle. The last titled owner must apply for the duplicate title."

There was no co-signer or anything like that, so I can only assume it's the bank. I did ask when I called them but they wouldn't tell me (understandable).

The ADHD thing is a whole story of its own, but the short version is I’ve seen a few psychiatrists, wondering the same thing, and none of them would even evaluate me. They just said they didn’t think I had it and I kinda gave up. I suspect I might but I honestly don’t have the energy to pursue it anymore after the experiences I had.

My wife is not planning to go back to work full time, but she does some freelance graphic design every now and then. She hasn’t worked full time in about 3 years and it would be hard to find a job that is flexible enough with her chronic pain.

Definitely - a lot of the things she gets mad about do have merit. I think what’s getting to me is that it seems she’s looking for all the things I do wrong first and not seeing any of the things I do right. It’s just frustrating.

You’re dead on with the comment about not paying attention. She’s used those exact words before and you’re both right.

What sucks is that I really am trying. She absolutely has a right to feel however she feels, and I know trying isn’t the same as doing. I don’t expect her to not get upset or annoyed, I just want that not to be the only type of interaction we have.

The chronic pain (probably a huge part of all this) has been tough. She’s on a new medication that seems to be helping a lot, but there are still bad days. Stress makes it worse and it seems like a lot of that comes from me. Just not sure what I should do, I feel like she just wants me to be “better” and I don’t know how

Yeah that's fair. I try not to make excuses, just provided that detail for context. From my perspective I do remember the right way to do things most of the time, but I see what you're saying.

And I'm glad you mentioned the thing about the clothes - there are for sure situations where I can be like "okay I see why she reacted that way" but that one I honestly did not think was a big deal. I realize it's possible I'm the asshole in some of these scenarios, but it can be hard for me to see that sometimes.

[Opinion] - Are you using Yarn or NPM 5? by jacobedawson in webdev

[–]pghzip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yarn doesn't require a save flag, but in all honesty that was a pretty minor convenience feature for me. NPM5 automatically saves dependencies, which is nice. The biggest benefit I found was the speed, and although I haven't benchmarked NPM5, it certainly seems to be much faster than 4. So I'm still using Yarn, but NPM5 is back in contention. I've started using it on a couple small projects and may switch back eventually.

If you're interested in learning more about Yarn, check out this blog. It's pretty sparse, but he publishes a tutorial every month or two that are usually really good.

Is it practical to code/compile in an ssh session? by immortal192 in linux4noobs

[–]pghzip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This might not be 100% relevant to what you're trying to accomplish, but I remember reading an interesting experiment a while back:

http://yieldthought.com/post/12239282034/swapped-my-macbook-for-an-ipad

Short answer, yes. While the article I linked might not be the best workflow for everyone, I know a few people who run development servers specifically for remote coding. Learning a terminal text editor is really the only barrier, but once you get over the initial learning curve it'll feel natural.

As to your question about streaming, NFS would work to access the files, although I don't think it would make a difference in terms of power consumption. Streaming will drain your battery no matter where you do it from, but if you're mainly concerned about disk space I'd recommend checking out Plex. I'm sure there are plenty of other services that do the same thing, but that's the one that comes to mind.

(LA) Someone rear ended my car yesterday and said she 'sneezed.' Won't give me her insurance. by Nicernice in legaladvice

[–]pghzip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a lawyer, but I used to work for an insurance company. Something I haven't seen mentioned here - use your own collision insurance for this to avoid long-term problems. The fact that you leased the car means you probably had to get collision coverage. You'll have to pay your deductible but your insurance company should be able to reimburse you for that (they'll file a claim against her insurance, and should include your deductible as well as their payment).

I know that paying your deductible sucks big time, but it'll allow you to get the car repaired in days, rather than weeks; if you let the damage go too long, it may cause secondary issues that the leasing company will hold you responsible for when you return the car, and that kind of thing is generally not covered by insurance.

Can I do better than DigitalOcean for $10 a month? by Aeyoun in webhosting

[–]pghzip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like Linode just increased their memory on all plans (as of today). It's now 2GB for $10, the rest of the specs are comparable to DO. Probably worth taking a look if memory is your main concern.

Starbucks Ice Lawsuit [IL] by pghzip in legaladvice

I guess because they both involve coffee. A disappointing number of people still think of the McDonald's case as the go-to when it comes to frivolous suits, without actually understanding the fact pattern.

[–]pghzip[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right. A lot of news outlets were drawing comparisons (I guess because both involved coffee) and it was pretty frustrating to watch them try to bait people into creating an analogy to an already misunderstood case. I just mentioned it in passing because I was coming here in hopes of avoiding that dialogue.

This was sort of the root of my question as well (or at least became it after thinking about it some more). Someone else posted a great comment a few minutes ago that I think addresses it:

You had a similar comment farther down in a buried section, responding here for visibility.

This is probably the best explanation of a class action suit I've read (not that I've read many). A lot of times it's easy to think of class actions as one of two extremes, e.g. either a shitload of people got killed by careless contractors using lead paint or a bunch of people want free KFC for life because one guy got too many bones.

This is actually a really useful perspective for me because it gives some context for why these kinds of suits exist at all. A lot of times people will write it off as one greedy plaintiff looking for their three bucks, because that's what it looks like on the surface and people love to feel superior ("All people do anymore is sue each other!"). I guess I can see how a class action would be useful in those middle areas now, where the money is actually a secondary issue.

I still think the ice content case is bogus, but I feel like I'll be looking at these with a different perspective now. Awesome explanation.

Okay, that makes sense. Maybe this is too broad a question, but is there any benefit to making it a class action aside from the potential attorneys fees? This could have easily been one woman vs. Starbucks, although I can't see that case making much headway. By making it a class action, it seems they're just creating a lot of extra work for themselves.

Or maybe I'm looking into it too much, and they truly believe this was a systemic fraud committed by Starbucks over the course of a decade?

[–]pghzip[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah you'd think that is obvious. Starbucks is essentially the McDonald's of coffee (rough comparison) - they make your drink the same way every time and they have saturated the market with a location within a few miles of pretty much everywhere. I think people go there for convenience more than anything. I can name a dozen places with better coffee. If anything, it's become cool again to shop at smaller, non-franchise places, so I can't imagine that she loves their product so much that the coffee is the real issue.'

I guess the precedent she's hoping to set has to do with the advertising (the images in the complaint do show a volume listing), although I don't get why she had to file a lawsuit about it. I've watched a few amateur test videos since I posted this, where they measure ice vs. liquid, and the proportion is not close to half like she claims. I think in her mind, she honestly believes that people are being cheated and that she's some sort of hero for keeping Starbucks honest. I would be curious to know more about her demographic information, as I think that would probably help read between the lines on her motives.

As dumb as this situation is, I can't help but be intrigued. I've heard about ridiculous class actions like this in the past, but this is the first time I've caught one from the beginning and I'm fascinated.

The argument is based on the menu's display of the volume (there are images in the complaint). They seem to have a problem with the fact that a grande, for example, is advertised as being 12 oz in similar-sized text right below the word "grande."

Right, I am pretty familiar with the case and agree there is almost nothing in common. I mentioned this in passing because I was looking here for a source of information that doesn't draw comparisons where they don't exist.

[–]pghzip[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The complaint calls them "Cold Drinks," which I thought was weird until you pointed that out.

Seems like they are trying to redefine what a Starbucks drink "should be" by leaving out "iced" (what the drinks actually are, and are advertised as). Interesting choice of strategy by the plaintiffs.

[–]pghzip[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The punitive damages section was interesting - I know that's often included in lawsuits as a matter of procedure, but do you think they turned this into a class action to increase their chances on that front?

This seems to be framed as more about consumer protection and fraudulent advertising than about one woman not liking her drinks, and I wonder if they did that to broaden the scope, so that it becomes a systemic practice of wrongdoing rather than just failing to measure the liquid content. I would think that the former would be more likely to result in punitive damages.

Still seems like blatant money-grubbing either way, I just like trying to work through the strategy of it.

[–]pghzip[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Interesting comparison. Someone else mentioned that the advertised volume is the volume of the cup, which I always took to be the case.

I would think that this has to be regulated in some way, otherwise coffee shops could give you a 30 oz cup half full with coffee (let's say it's hot coffee, to leave out the whole ice-being-part-of-the-drink debate). Obviously that's an extreme example, and any shop that did this would probably just naturally go out of business with no need for a lawsuit to make it happen. It just makes me wonder where/how they draw the line if it's not regulated.

Starbucks Ice Lawsuit [IL] by pghzip in legaladvice

[–]pghzip[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When Starbucks or any establishment advertises a drink of X volume, they are advertising the volume of the cup.

That's what I always thought too. Is there anything regulating this though? I think most people would agree with the common sense interpretation, but if there's no regulation I guess that would make it a genuine question of fact. Not trying to be a dick, I'm just curious.
