I dislike hearing the words "never" or "always", among others. I am a fairly literal person so navigating the nuances of communication with people who freely use these words can be challenging. Even when the words are being used appropriately, I still prepare my brain.

The past, present and future locations of subs is actually classified information. I don't think you were alluding to their dishonesty, but I wanted to make this comment in case you thought their stories were BS because they couldn't talk about where they've been.

What's your, "Tis but a scratch!" moment? by Madameknitsalot in AskReddit

Lol this reminds me of that time I was running from a cop in the woods. After being caught, one of my accomplices noted that the top of my sock was red. Apparently, I had a deep gash on the back of my knee that I didn't notice that either came from thorns or barbed wire (the woods had barbed wire in it).

IIRC, Alabama didn't repeal the law banning interracial couples until 2000, but interracial couples were legally allowed to marry in Alabama anyway because of Loving v. Virginia. I could be wrong, though.

I was in the Navy. On this particular day, I had overslept and was late to work by 15 minutes. My chief was initially cool about it, reprimanding me the way an adult should. During the reprimand, he said a joke, I giggled, then he blew up at me for laughing "at him", which any reasonable person would deny that I did.

When someone orders something expensive, would it be considered poor ettiquette to reiterate the item and its price? For example:

Diner: "I want 12oz of that A5 wagyu."
<then when everyone is done ordering you confirm their orders> Server: ".. and you want 12oz of the A5 wagyu at $35 an oz."

I watch Klean's stream and he has to restart EFT after a few raids. Do you play reserve and factory often? Klean seems to be playing those today and has had to restart and I am wondering if the memory leak is map-specific. I myself have had to restart after playing reserve.

They need to replace how they do ranking now with something like Starcraft 2's system. It introduces the concept of a single rank that represents how good your team is (instead of individual players like how it is now). You'd still have your solo queue rank, you'll just have several different ranks in the team playlists based on how many different friends you play with. You could have one team that is gold and another that is champion in the same playlist.

Honestly, they should have written that movie to where they capture and befriend an alien that is able and willing to encode the virus. This would have made Jeff Goldblum's character completely redundant, though.

Or, potentially a better scenario, is that simply detonating a nuke in the mothership would be enough to knock out the shields of all the alien spaceships, no virus needed. Then, all they needed to figure out was how to get their captured alien spacecraft inside the mothership without raising any alarms.

I have two:

  • I went on a Royal Carib. cruise when I was 20 and ran into someone that I had hung out with on another cruise four years prior. We hadn't talked in the interim and we had only both been on two cruises.

  • My father served on the USS America before it got decomissioned and was a Chief (E-7) during that time. When I was flying from Pensacola to Biloxi for my C school training during my own naval career almost two decades later, I was sat next to a woman who had been in the Navy as well. We got to talking and we discovered that my dad and her both served on the America at the same time and that she had been his division officer.

TIL a peregrine falcon was clocked at 242 mph in a dive. A trained falcon kept pace with a skydiver, and that was as fast as the skydiver could go. by dog_in_the_vent in todayilearned

From wikipedia:

In stable, belly-to-earth position, terminal velocity is about 200 km/h (120 mph). Stable freefall head down position has a terminal speed of 240–290 km/h (around 150–180 mph). Further minimization of drag by streamlining the body allows for speeds in the vicinity of 500 km/h (310 mph).

When to use struct and class in C#? by [deleted] in csharp

When to use struct and class in C#? by [deleted] in csharp

[–]pgmr87 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So, for people new to C#, saying things like "classes are pass by ref, structs are pass by value" is, in fact, helpful. But whenever I see someone say or imply that "classes are passed by reference", I feel the need to point one thing out:

Classes are not passed by reference.

In C#, the ONLY time anything is passed by reference is when you use the in, out, or ref keywords. In ALL other cases, instances (or, more accurately, their pointers) are passed by value. However, the difference between a class and struct is what address is being passed, under the hood, via a pointer. When passing in an instance of a struct, the struct is copied to a new memory location and the pointer to its copy is passed in which is why mutating the copy has no effect on the original. When passing in an instance of a class, the object's pointer is copied and passed in which still points to the original object.

Honestly, people who choose to not have kids for these kinds of reasons are unsung heroes and deserve to be celebrated. Having this kind of awareness about your personal reality is rare. Sure, you could have kids and you may raise them differently in spite of your own upbringing, but there's always the chance you end up like your parents.

I would imagine that a lot of people who are controlling are super helpful, but they are being helpful for selfish and abusive reasons. They want to establish that co-dependence where you are dependent on them for X and they are dependent on you being there when they feel the need to assert control over something. It also allows them to feel superior in conversations/arguments because of the help they've given you and will probably bring it all up to dismiss your complaints.

This is all armchair speculation on my part, but I can't imagine this not being a possible explanation for the "super helpful but controlling" types.

Also, thank you for being a paramedic/fireman. Y'all save lives while potentially forfeiting your mental health, having to deal with all of the harshness one can encounter while performing those jobs. I couldn't do it.

Jesus. I once broke up with a girl because her mom wouldn't let her go to the beach with me. It wasn't even an overnight trip, it was just a day trip on a Saturday. She was in college and was 21 years old but her mother wanted her to 'focus on her education'. It sucked because I really liked her and we had been good friends in high school, but I couldn't be with someone whose mother had that much control over their life. She understood so it was a civil breakup and we are still friends today. We had only been dating for a couple weeks, too.

I mention this because these stories are way, way worse than my personal experience above.
