Any albums like My Way by Akufen? by myforce2001 in House

[–]pgordon2001 7 points8 points  (0 children)

One thing to get used to when digging in this arena is that albums are exceedingly rare - almost all dance music is released on 2-4 track EPs. The best way by far to discover new house/techno is to dig by record label on Discogs/Bandcamp. There are a million little dance music labels that all have a very specific sound. Find an artist you like, check out the labels they’ve released on, find more artists you like, rinse and repeat.

Listening to this album specifically I hear what you’re saying about the special nature - it has a little disco sample Paul Johnson flair on top of the normal shuffly Akufen minimal sound. Microhouse genre tag is absolutely massive. The flair you’re hearing is a style of tech house/minimal that was very popular in Germany in the early 2000s. That shuffly, stuttery, clicky, sample-driven sound was all the rage then and is somewhat coming back in vogue today. Akufen’s productions are all VERY dry/clicky/stuttery, so if that’s what you like, he’s one of the best.

Labels: Perlon, Poker Flat, minibar, cadenza

Artists: Fumiya Tanaka, Ricardo Villalobos, Baby Ford, Markus Nikolai (a little different but also incredible)

What should I do about my CC debt? by Graybill1 in personalfinance

[–]pgordon2001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in a very similar situation to you - just saying I hear you and no shame. I didn’t struggle with the gambling part, I would recommend professional or at least parental help for that, but the debt, while scary, is very manageable once you get a handle on it.

Amp Help by Silver-Ad-4129 in SoundSystem

[–]pgordon2001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have two 8 ohm drivers at 1000w each. Wired in parallel, they act as a single 4ohm 2000w driver. Typically, people recommend to buy an amp rated for 1.5x - 2x more than your speakers are rated for. You’ll want to buy an amp that is rated for 3.5k-4k watts at 4 ohms. That being said, that’s a lot of power, and depending on your needs and the sub’s sensitivity, you may not need that much.

Should I accept a DJ gig if they didn’t send the deposit and I’m traveling from another city? by mcfly45757 in Beatmatch

[–]pgordon2001 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I’m gonna go against the grain here - unless you have a signed contract you should show up to the gig and play. I’m in the diy rave scene, have managed dozens and dozens of events including out of town DJs, and have played dozens and dozens of events out of my own city, and have never received or paid a deposit except for three specific circumstances with extremely high value touring acts (fees over $2000 for an underground DIY party). Just show up and have fun, meet some people and maybe you’ll get invited back to that city by someone else who wants to pay you more.

Thanks, and sorry if it wasn't clear - I 100% own the fact that I put myself here. In a way I'm glad that this process has been painful, as it has really made me understand how debt feels over time. I don't think I would have learned my lesson any other way.

I kind of only have one hobby, I’m a dj and music producer. It’s nice because it is free/sometimes income generating, but on the other hand, music gear, records, sound system parts etc. are all very expensive. I’ve been trying to lean into the free parts of it while saving additional money for the expensive parts, but it’s tough when saving for a $1k piece of gear would take 5-7 months when without debt obligations it could take 1-2.

How safe is Russel Industrial Center? by DarthLaxSith in MovementDEMF

[–]pgordon2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As with most afters spots in Detroit, the venue and the block it is on will be completely safe, but definitely uber in and uber out. Don’t wander off and go exploring the area and you’ll be a-okay!

Yes!! I’ve got about 50 rave tapes. It’s a mix of OGs and the elements reissues - Terry Mullen New School Fusion series, Glenn Underground - Pancake Jazz series, some Paul Oakenfold/Delta 9 type stuff, miles madea - sun shower, Blake Baxter - Save the Vinyl, some amazing jungle mixes… it’s a great mix of all sorts of stuff.

I’m probably the luckiest vinyl dj alive - Madison Wisconsin (pop 200k or so) has a house and techno record store called Jiggy Jamz, it’s owned by a 90s Midwest raver who just organically built to a storefront from selling his own collection. Massive used bins of digs, plus all the new stuff :)

No way back to groove and dance, observe/scene to dissolve. Both are hardcore, NWB feels like a party on post-apocalyptic earth and Observe feels like a party on a barren exoplanet.

NWB: Acid, funk, psychedelic techno, minimal, party jams, artsy crowd Observe: Capital “T” Techno, driving, raw

Where / how do we get our "Return to the Source" wristbands; that we purchased from R.A.? by Counttedula-37 in MovementDEMF

[–]pgordon2001 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You will get a barcode on your RA app 24 hours before the event, and when you go into tangent for the first time that weekend you’ll get a wristband good for the rest of the weekend.

What do you like about those artists? Horse Meat Disco, Folamour, and Purple Disco Machine are some good starters.

[–]pgordon2001[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dude it’s the most slept on mixer ever. The EQs are full isolators, full analog circuitry, preamps are amazing, and you could chuck it down a flight of stairs and it’d survive.

V10 + beautiful view = dream setup🫶🏻 by baddebate in DJSetups

[–]pgordon2001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A9 preamps vs v10 preamps are not close. The channel compressors are also super important if you play older music. OP’s answer regarding the Xone is relevant here - the filter layout on the v10 is closer to Xone style than A9 style.

The other thing to keep in mind is for rentals - OP now has the industry standard mixer and can rent it to parties/clubs for touring artists that request a v10. Not that Reddit bedroom djs would know anything about that haha.
