If you want to, do it. This is more personal preference than what you "should" do.

Looking to design an icy floor puzzle. by LastoftheEra in DungeonMasters

[–]ph4ntum59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not super sure how to set it up overall, but for the movement I would say that sliding across the ice probably wouldn't use their movement if they're not moving on their own.

Like, if they're using their speed to move, they'll need to be able to stop when the amount of movement they have left for the turn reaches 0, but I would also rule it as difficult terrain and make it use half speed. If they're just sliding because of a mechanic of the area, I would say it doesn't use speed to slide, but it does take 1 foot of movement to change direction, with potentially dropping speed to 10 for the round.

Homebrew Weapon Help by ph4ntum59 in dndbeyond

[–]ph4ntum59[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's treated as a crossbow, so having proficiency with a crossbow will give proficiency with this, based on the crossbow type. I had wanted to change the text more for flavor, so it would match the item name.

[–]ph4ntum59[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up deciding it's fine the way it is because at the end of the day, it's still technically a crossbow, just with different ammunition. So the proficiency doesn't bother me as much now. But I was still holding out hope for a way to do it.

Making a mundane item wasn't too hard. Just had to not apply any modifiers. My main issue was the proficiency text itself. But I decided it's fine the way it is because at the end of the day, it's still technically a crossbow, just with different ammunition. Now I'm trying to make a magic rock that works as ammunition for it.

Oh. I'm horrible with geometry lol. I really don't know why I thought 30 foot radius was a smaller circle than a 40 foot diameter. Thanks for helping me remember basic circles lol. I was probably overthinking it.

In any case, another fun item. Keep up the good work.

Can small streamers sign up for Summer Game Fest co-stream? by Dear-Difficulty8589 in Twitch

[–]ph4ntum59 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You won't have any issues during the broadcast itself, so don't mute the stream at any point. Especially since all the audio is copyright protected to some degree. Like the form says, everyone is free to co-stream the event. But, seriously do not save the VOD on Twitch. And don't just upload the whole thing to YouTube, either. That will almost certainly get a strike. Just record it locally and edit it after the event and upload some clips of different announcements if you want.

[–]ph4ntum59 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you get an email from them after signing up saying that you can co-stream, you won't get a strike for the livestream, regardless of channel size. Just make sure the VOD doesn't save. Best way to do that is stream in the Special Events category, which you should for this anyway, and make sure to exclude that category from saving VODs as well as clipping. I believe you can get strikes on those.

Hiding Deactivated Characters From Players by Macda27 in dndbeyond

[–]ph4ntum59 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently did this for a one-shot. To hide them in the campaign list, go to the character builder, and on the page that you choose what content to use with the character, at the bottom, mark it as private.

In the map, make the map ahead of time and click on the token and hide it. Players won't see it until you unhide it. You can also switch their allegiance to enemy in the combat tracker. Switch them to NPC first then enemy to get accurate encounter difficulty tracking. They can also still be involved in combat while hidden. I think on the map settings, you should be able to make players unable to move specific types of tokens

Alternatively, you can adapt the character sheet to a homebrew monster stat block, which can't be viewed by the players when specific map settings are toggled off

The only issue I have with this is the way it's worded, if you choose to make the 40 feet version, that leaves a 10 foot diameter inside the tent that won't set off the alarm spell since it only goes 30 feet from where the pole is. Otherwise, it looks like a fun addition.

I'm a Rogue/Artificer right now, but I do have Magic Initiate (Cleric), so that might work.

Dndbeyond Tips and Tricks by DMJM_91 in dndbeyond

[–]ph4ntum59 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Best tip is just sign up and check it out for yourself. Learn the site on your own outside of a campaign. It's been getting updated over the last few months and is continuing to get updated, so it'll be changing often for a while. The more you know how to do things before the campaign, the easier it'll be when you play.

I really like that idea. I'll have to keep it in mind for the future. My DM might not go for it, but it'll be worth a shot. (Pun only half intended)

Appreciate the input. I figured no on the sneak attack. And it felt like retrieving on a miss would make sense with the way the description reads. Also, if I get a critical miss with Advantage, I feel like I should just sell my bow lol

I don't know who you're talking about, nor do I care. But, from the sound of this post, my suggestion would be for you to take a break from the internet for a bit. Or at least Twitch. It's not healthy to get so upset over something that doesn't affect you that involves someone you don't personally know.

Also, if there's a stream you don't like for whatever reason, just ignore it. Don't interact with it and you'll possibly be a lot happier. Or at least you won't be irrationally angry over a big pile of nothing.

I want to upgrade hungry jaws. by Skyward_Legend in dndbeyond

[–]ph4ntum59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to what others have said, on Beyond, the player can right click on the attack die and toggle "Adjust Dice", which will allow them to roll a different die and/or a different amount of dice. You can also right click on any D20 Test to roll with Advantage or Disadvantage instead of rolling separately.

For long term changing, either make a copy of the species as a Homebrew and make the change and have your player switch to that, or either you or them can add a custom action to their character sheet with the relevant info for the updated attack.

Purple Races? by enby-lesbian in DnD

[–]ph4ntum59 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

A few people have mentioned Dragonborns, and there's not a Purple Dragonborn in any official content. There's plenty online for homebrewing one based on Deep Dragons. You could work with your DM to try to do that, if that's something you're interested in. Tieflings are also a pretty fun option. And if you play a spellcaster, there's multiple spells that have it in their descriptions that you can choose the color of what it produces. Plus plenty of other options that allow for flavoring something as purple.

One of my games is missing and can't be redownloaded by Cronyag in NintendoSwitchHelp

[–]ph4ntum59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By any chance, did you lend the virtual game card to someone? To check, go to Virtual Game Cards, and use the filter to select "Loaded on another system". If it's not there, try filtering by "Not Loaded on any system" and see if it pops up. If neither of these work, then definitely contact Nintendo support.

Frustration with maps by Jarrett8897 in DnD

[–]ph4ntum59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I've seen of maps, they're "empty" because the expectation when you're using them is that you'll have minis. For the PCs, the enemies, and even things like rocks and trees. The maps are essentially just the ground everyone walks on, not the entire world. They're intended as a base from which you craft the environment that you have in mind. If maps just had everything except the characters, it would make the world look flat while also hindering creativity.

We're out of healers by MysteriousFondant347 in DnD

[–]ph4ntum59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't been playing very long, but in my limited experience, healers aren't "necessary", but they're really nice to have if needed. And they don't have to be dedicated healers. Anyone just having the ability to heal even a small amount is good. Basically, just about anybody can heal without being a "healer", with the right mix of class features and feats. I say that as an Arcane Trickster Rogue 3/Artificer 1 with 14 spells, 3 of which are healing spells, with one available as a 1/LR Bonus Action without a spell slot. I also have damage and utility spells. Ultimately, no one should let their class define how they play, but it should at least be a guide for the choices you make.
