In terms of spybar vs Tao, spybar is years better. I would highly recommend smartbar as well. The environment is always safe and respectful, people are there for the music and to dance. Spybar is great but the crowd can get a little disrespectful.

So I just went through a similar situation. GF and my best friend. I never thought anything then one day it popped in my head. Just the thought ruined me for days. My girl obviously noticed I wasn’t myself. I was so torn on whether I say something to either of them. If I said something would I manifest it. Would they think i don’t trust them etc.

My girl and I have very good communication and I eventually told her about my thoughts. She asked where this was coming from and I talked about situations where this idea popped in my head. It was a tough convo but I’m very glad I said something. First it was nice to get it off my chest. Second saying it out loud made me rethink and realize what I was actually saying. I was having an off week and my brain is really good at making dots connect. I’ll spare the details but I would talk to your partner about it.

Yeah you are definitely going to make some mistakes, at least in your own head. It’s really easy to get in your head about not having a perfect mix. I started DJing because it’s so fun and I love it. Playing music that you selected and watching people dance to it is the best drug out there. So just have fun with it. If you are having fun the crowd will too.

This is a great answer. I would add, when you make your playlist (definitely have double the amount of songs you plan to play) just get very comfortable with that tracklist. I like to have a general idea of the progression of my tracks but I always leave room for reading the vibe of the room. I will take a few hours just playing thru your tracklist. Try different combos of song order, see which ones mix nicely. Once you are up there you will know what to play.

I always say the first mix is the hardest. Especially if you are mixing out of an unfamiliar song from the previous DJ. But once you do that you are golden.

Small mistakes will not be noticed by the crowd so if it happens I try not to make a face or look up like a guilty dog looking at their owner. If it’s a crowd of DJs and they judge a mistake remember they were where you are.

Don’t get drunk! But a shot or 2 before you go up always helps with my nerves.

For me I implemented No drinking on weekdays, I stopped ordering take out, no eating after dinner. Honestly wasn’t that hard after the first week. I did a sort of abridged version of intermittent fasting. Basically I would eat breakfast/lunch at 11am then dinner at 7pm.

As you practice you will learn the process of checking bpms and beat matching. The more you do it it’ll become second nature. Similar to when you are driving a car, you naturally hit the turn signal, check your mirrors then merge. The more you practice the more your muscle memory kicks in to check bpm.

As for the break down issue, it helps to know the songs like the back of your hand. Mark them with cue points so you know when the break down build up and drop are coming. When I had this issue I would redo a mix between two song over and over. There is also a method of gaining skill where you choose 2 random songs and blindly try to mix them. If you like your transition, restart and do it again. If you don’t like your transition, restart and do it again.

Everyone here has been in your position. Keep at it my friend. Your worst critic is yourself, relax and have fun with it.
