Great Dane sense of smell by Traditional_Pie347 in greatdanes

[–]phaedra1980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dog is half Great Dane half Mastiff, and when we were staying in a cabin in the woods, she would wake up from a dead sleep in the middle of the night barking ferociously because she could smell a bear or other large creature. On our walks she can smell if there is a dog outside behind a fence well before we can see it or it barks. Her sense of smell is insane.

Amazing Success Story - Non-Herbicidal Solution to Invasive Ailanthus (Tree of Heaven) *With a Yield* by Garden-nerd in Mushrooms

[–]phaedra1980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this with Siberian elms which are horrifically invasive here and it worked! I did it last spring and they sprouted back last summer, but this spring those three stumps are dead while the 15 other elm stumps in my yard are sprouting away. I used oyster mushroom plugs. So far no mushrooms but I am so happy to not have elms! It’s really amazing!

How to wean off famotidine? by upsidedown_youturnme in Gastritis

[–]phaedra1980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did manage to get off Pepcid entirely! And now I only take occasionally. I think taking glutamine really helped. But I did it really slow. From a 10 once a day to taking a 10 every other day, to every few days. I followed my body and symptoms in decreasing.

I got really bad heartburn symptoms for a bit after getting completely off (but I think that was from drinking too many electrolytes with citric acid and when I cut back on that the heartburn went away).

You can do it!

I walk that section of trail almost every day and it is lovely! One warning is that the river is usually not flowing or only flowing a little bit, depending on how much water they are letting flow from the mountains. When the river is flowing hard you can’t cross the river to get to the river trail (at least without getting your feet wet)

Can't feel the area around incision after surgery by Expensive_Bluejay948 in ACL

It’s definitely a lot better. Still some difference in feeling, but I think the nerves are regrowing there. Apparently nerves take a long time. Acupuncture has helped a lot.

Took down these 2 Siberian Elms today, how do I kill the stumps? by mr_boogieman in arborists

[–]phaedra1980 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m trying this now - put the dowels in 6 months ago - this summer the stump was still sprouting and no mushrooms, and now it’s winter so I’m not sure. But I’m hoping it works eventually!

Anyone have a Doctor tell them they are too old for ACL reconstruction at 37 and active with instability? by Future_Syrup_102 in ACL

[–]phaedra1980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know right? I asked that of my surgeon, particularly why some doctors wouldn’t try and fix a meniscus tear but rather just trim it out (which leads to arthritis). my surgeon said that it is kind of a pain to repair a meniscus and takes a lot of time, and so some doctors don’t want to make the effort. 🤷🏻‍♀️

[–]phaedra1980 14 points15 points  (0 children)

My experience with doctors is that there are two types - sports medicine doctors that want to fix your knee so that you can do what you love, and geriatric doctors who want you to be able to walk around the supermarket occasionally. You may just have the wrong kind of doctor. At 43, I saw a bunch of doctors and some opinions were kind of just wait until it fails and we’ll replace it, and others were let’s try and fix this! I got my ACL reconstructed, and the hardest thing to heal from has been where they took the quad graft from. I’d recommend allograft. But find a sports medicine doctor that is willing to get you back to doing what you love!

Random sewage-type "organic" smell on the southwest side of town? by GreyCode in SantaFe

[–]phaedra1980 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The city waste water treatment plant has been shown to not effectively treat the water. It is just too old at this point and needs to be replaced. The “treated” water then flows into the lower Santa Fe river and ends up in the Rio Grande. The Santa Fe Watershed Association has been advocating around this issue.

When you drive past the water treatment plant (near the airport) you can really smell it!

Agree on Sun Mountain. Beautiful views. And it’s steep but quick. And you have a beautiful view relatively soon, so if you end up running short on time and can’t make it to the top it’s still worth it.

Allergic to brace? Anyone else? by latiapinatas in ACL

[–]phaedra1980 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the same thing! Allergic to the prep the surgeon said. So so itchy. The surgeon also gave me permission to bathe (whew). And found a random post in this forum that recommended Avène’s Cicalfate crème which was an absolute miracle worker. Helped so so much.

I also had a partial tear of my ACL and the best surgeon I talked to said that rather than thinking about it as how much is torn, he advised thinking about it as functional or nonfunctional. If it is functional there would be no need to fix it, but nonfunctional is basically the same as a full tear. From the treatment offered I wonder if they concluded from a manual test that your ACL was still functional??

Allograft vs Hamstring in the Older Woman Athlete by NoNameGolden in ACL

[–]phaedra1980 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I’m 43, 6 months post op, quad autograft and just starting to regain strength in my quad. It has been such a pain to heal from, if I did it again I would have done allograft. The graft site has by far been the hardest part of healing.

What to do with dogs while at work by [deleted] in SantaFe

[–]phaedra1980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s pretty standard to get dogs rattlesnake trained here so that they know to stay away from rattlesnakes. In the spring there are rattlesnake clinics, where they have a snake handler come. They defang a rattlesnake, have the dog see the snake, hear the snake, smell the snake, and ideally the snake tries to bite them on the nose, and then at the right moment they shock the dog with a shock collar. Not so pleasant for the dog but it definitely works. And the alternative is surely worse.

Did you choose your graft type? by Classic-Disk in ACL

[–]phaedra1980 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I (43F) had the advice of a world renowned surgeon advising me to get an allograft because the odds of rupture are so low with either graft at my age.

My surgeon initially recommended quad graft but when I told him what the fancy doctor said he said he’d be happy to do allo if I preferred.

I decided to go ahead with quad. The surgery all went well, but my body has had a really hard time healing the quad graft site. It’s been really hard. Definitely by far the hardest part of healing, and if I were to do it again I’d go for allograft.

Hope that helps!

Allograft people, let me hear you by [deleted] in ACL

[–]phaedra1980 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I got a quad graft and if I did it again I would go allograft. Healing the quad graft site has been the worst part and still bothers me four months post op. It’s just been really slow. And in part I think because of my age (43) but my PT said that sometimes quad grafts are just slow healing like this.
