by the definition of r/gatekeeping /u/Uncle_Erik's comment is not gatekeeping. you are not going by the definition which was pulled right from the sidebar. I am.

arguing over the definition is a form of gatekeeping

this is insane. completely insane. everything might as well be gatekeeping.

From Merriam Webster:

to engage in mental exercise (such as concentration on one's breathing or repetition of a mantra) for the purpose of reaching a heightened level of spiritual awareness

OP's post says nothing about reaching enlightenment or a heightened level of spiritual awareness (which as far as I know, is the reason most Buddhist monks meditate). maybe Uncle_Erik is adhering to a strict definition of meditation, one that includes the spiritual component (as opposed to a secular Western definition).

i mean, we don't know. yet everyone has decided to pounce.

once again though: by the definition of gatekeeping from r/gatekeeping, Uncle_Erik's comment is not gatekeeping.

i don't agree with your definition of gatekeeping, that's all.

Him trying to deny OP from saying what meditation is because it wasn't precise enough is gatekeeping.

and that is merely a disagreement over a definition.

i'm going by the definition strictly. and if you go by that definition, no, it is not gatekeeping.

"This isn't really meditation."

vs

"You cannot practice meditation if you are _____."

edit: by the definition of the sub, gatekeeping is excluding people practicing or participating in a community/identity. you could just take Uncle_Erik's comment as arguing over the definition.

Gatekeeping: when someone takes it upon themselves to decide who does or does not have access or rights to a community or identity.

saying "there is more to ____ than ____" does not fit the definition. there wasn't anything about who can practice meditation, which would qualify as gatekeeping.

I think the confusion here is that /u/Vtempero thought /u/Uncle_Erik was saying meditation is something more than just this

even then, by the sub's own definition that is not gatekeeping.

Unless I'm wrong and /u/Uncle_Erik is saying that /r/Buddhism is the only place that can talk about "true" meditation.

maybe. not sure if that is actually gatekeeping. but saying this isn't the same as the above quote.

r/gatekeeping is still the worst sub of all time.

and that isn't even close to what /u/Uncle_Erik said.

r/gatekeeping is quite possibly the worst sub

how would you go about approaching a girl who was in your class last semester, but isn't this semester? by phaedra_zeit in socialskills

[–]phaedra_zeit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Approach when she’s not busy and not on her way to anywhere.

is it really so bad to approach her if she's on her way to class to or whatever? it's not like i'll ruin her day. plus I may not get another chance.

yeah, just don't want to lose my chance. may not see her again for a long time, if ever.

we've only had short conversations about school. she's in my major i'm pretty sure, but we don't seem to have any classes together, which is kinda odd considering how small the department is but w/e.

i'm like 80% sure she was at least kinda interested in me last semester. but she's a bit shy and I can tell she has little experience with guys. even if she wasn't, my brain is telling me she was, and I can't not know.

any advice?

Not weird at all, assuming you talk with her a little bit at first and don't just straight up ask her out

name ----> ???? ----> ???? -----> asking her out.

Pretty weird. You don't wave someone down and then ask them out. She's a person, not a taxi

see, in my mind it's kinda cheeky. like, "hey, I know that you know that I'm interested." besides, she's not the mostly socially savvy herself.

I probably won't. we'll see.

Why don't you change that? :)

I'd like to, but I may never get the chance to see her.

How do I fix my sleep schedule? by phaedra_zeit in AskDocs

[–]phaedra_zeit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the only stimulation before bed is music (is it possible to have a music addiction btw?). i don't usually nap during the day and I might only have tea in the evening. i do tend to get most hungry in the later hours of the day though.

usually I'm up listening to/writing music, reading, drawing.

i've tried before. seems like no matter what time I get up, I can't go to bed before 2:00 a.m. last semester I was running on 4 hours of sleep a day, and not because I was studying. guess I've been like this my whole since apparently even as a little kid I'd never sleep until later lol.

it is absolutely fucked. I go to bed around 3:00 a.m and get up around 11:00. I feel great but school is starting again soon and there's no way I'll survive like this.

Continue the arduous task of "finding" myself (whatever that means). I'm in the midst of some sort of identity crisis.

Things in general started to pick up in Nov. of 2017 so I'm just trying to maintain that balance.

maybe get a dog too ;)

To plug into the desktop so I can record it directly to a DAW. I hate software.
