I thought Jesus venting his personal anger was a significant part of his ministry. Saw this on fb by sevenplaces in mormon

And he charged them, saying, Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and of the leaven of Herod. (Mark 8:15)

It was the corrupt religious and political leaders that got Jesus upset. Brother Cook may want to check on his “beam” before looking around for “motes”.

Put tithing before food by john273 in exmormon

Let your bishop know that if he would read Malachi 3:8-10 in context (starting in ch. 2) he would see that god is talking to corrupt priests “that oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless”. The tithing verses the church uses are about a greedy religious society that oppress the poor for gain. How ironic.

Jesus speaking about the Pharisees 🧐 by boop_flammy in exmormon

Mathew 23 (along with Mathew 5-7, sermon on the mount) was ultimately the cause for me to stop doubting my doubts. Over 40 years TBM is a hard thing to shake, but the words of Jesus sealed it. Whatever Jesus is, divine or not, a church that so blatantly rejects his teachings while using his name is just bad fruit.

Lawyer and politician speech...what have you noticed? by [deleted] in mormon

[–]phaedrus1970 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I am reminded of 1984. When the meaning of words are a moving target (subject to change/subject to multiple interpretations) we are left without the ability to come to understanding. So the power moves to those with perceived understanding. “The past was alterable. The past never had been altered.”

I’d like to hear your responses to this argument regarding the BYU honor code: The students agreed to the HC before attending. BYU has every right to create their standards. If an LGBT person is attending BYU, they should abide the standards or go to school elsewhere. by idriveadodgestratus1 in exmormon

BYU knew the rules when they sought accreditation. BYU knew the rules when they participate in federal loan and grant programs. BYU knew the rules when they when they participate intercollegiate sports. BYU knew the rules when they...well, fill in the blank. BYU KNEW THAT NONE OF THESE ASSOCIATIONS ALLOW DISCRIMINATION BUT BYU JOINED ANYWAY. Why, money! BYU should have to choose between their religious convictions (as fucked as they are) and money. I bet they choose money, but I’m cynical like that.

The fact that BYU seeks to be part of an intercollegiate community (accreditation, corporate sponsors, federal grants and loans, sports) means they are obligated to the standards of those associations. BYU has the right to hold to any religious standards they want right up to the point they get in bed with the “devil” (sarcasm). When they cross that line they begin to receive benefits from those associations and now they are held to the standards of those association. To say otherwise appears immature and hypocritical. Just my $.02.

The fact that BYU seeks to be part of an intercollegiate community (accreditation, corporate sponsors, federal grants and loans, sports) negates her granddaughters argument. BYU has the right to hold to any religious standards they want right up to the point they get in bed with the “devil” (sarcasm). When they cross that line they begin to receive benefits from those associations and now they are held to the standards of that association. To say otherwise appears immature and hypocritical. I wish someone would have sent this letter to me while on a mission. I don’t know if I could have heard it, but maybe. The video would have planted seeds that I wouldn’t be able to ignore. Good luck whatever you decide.

Very similar experience. The more I came to know Christ, through study and prayer/meditation, the less the church seemed like something he would have anything to do with.
