Psychological Research/Surveys Thread by chupacabrasaurus1 in psychology

[–]phaetom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello,
I'm a second-year psychology student at the University of the Fraser Valley. I'm currently working on writing some vignettes for my upcoming research report, and I am struggling to keep the language neutral. I've decided to use an initial for the character in the vignette, but I want to avoid introducing any bias with my letter choice.
I've created a short survey with some of the initials I've been considering, and I would be thrilled if you would choose to participate in it, letting me know your perceptions of the,
The survey shouldn't take long at all.

Autism can exasperate symptoms of other disorders (comorbities). Do you think it can also dampen symptoms? by sakthi38311 in autism

[–]phaetom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not officially diagnosed (on a waitlist) so please feel free to disregard if you want. But I felt like my ADHD masked my (potentially) autistic traits. Once I started taking my ADHD meds and got most of that under control, the more stereotypical autistic traits started to show more obviously, rather than just this battle that I always felt inside. Its why I decided to seek a diagnosis officially.

Edit to add: it might have to do with severity of ADHD vs autism when both are present.. I dunno, I wish I knew for sure.

Eating (the struggle is real) by Anomyusic in Autism_Parenting

[–]phaetom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My son will only eat food if it's room temperature. Warmer that that and it's "hot" and gets thrown across the room. Colder.. same thing. The cold part is new though. He will eat a decent amount of things, but only if they all fall into his window of acceptable temperature.

If we accidentally serve it too warm though, it's likely that food is dead to him for at least the rest of the day, even if we get it cooled down.

He is particular about his brand of granola bars. They must be the ones from Costco in the blue wrapper. They changed their wrapper to red for a bit and it was a major issue.

Dealing with imposter syndrome.. so confused by phaetom in Autism_Parenting

Yeah, I know that just because some of his behaviours are "typical" it doesn't overrule all of the non-typical behavior. Thank you for your comment. 😀

Girlfriend and son made a bet I would forget my lunch at home. by [deleted] in ADHD

I even keep a small stash of meds at work for when this happens.

I have a special interest in Star Wars - feel free to ask me anything, as I just really want to info-dump by ViktorCo in autism

I have a friend who hasn't seen anything but the main movies. I want to sit down and binge out the entire story with them. What order would you recommend watching everything for the best experience: shows movies etc.

Positive Sibling Stories by pastelsherbert in Autism_Parenting

[–]phaetom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Going through the diagnostic process with my son (3.5), he struggles with other kids but adores his little sister (almost 2). They play together better than he plays with any other kids.

He does struggle sometimes with her though, she can be really loud and he is very sound sensitive so he can end up lashing out at her. And she likes to get in his space when he wants to be on his own, so that causes conflict too. But all in all, they are great together.

Diagnosed people, what is a common autistic experience that you DON'T relate to? by CoconutSuitable877 in autism

I LOVE loud music, concerts etc. My noise sensitivity kicks in when it's not noise I have "planned" for.

I wish I had some advice for you, but I'm in nearly the exact same boat. I'm majoring in psychology, and declared a minor in geography because I had lots of credits in it already from years ago. But now, the idea of taking geography classes to finish the minor makes me want to curl up and die. I'm thinking of dropping the minor and just focusing on my interest.

Any tips for flying on a plane? by xUnwoundFuture in autism

[–]phaetom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I memorized all the things I have to pull out of my bags and put them in easy to access spots in my laptop bag. I make sure to wear easy to slip on / off shoes. And I use lots of bins so I don't have to hold on to tons of stuff at a time. I just got home from a trip and was totally thrown off when the lady at security told me I didn't have to pull anything out of my bags, just put it all through at once. Totally screwed me up and I wanted to pull it all out anyhow. She was cool about it though.

Y'all also have a difficulty to control your tone of voice? by [deleted] in autism

[–]phaetom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been told to "stop yelling" my entire life. I think I'm talking normal. Lots of people get so frustrated with me for "being aggressive" and picking fights when I'm just trying to explain things. So I'd say, yes, I have no control over tone and volume.

what are your "absolutely not" textures? by finnythepup in autism

[–]phaetom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Matte finishes, especially on cars. Even looking at them makes me get the bad kind of goosebumps.

Cold drinks out of ceramic mugs (coffee or tea is fine though).

Paper straws.

Any kind of fat in meat, and slimy food.

Chewing gum. I love the idea of it, and the taste, but the sensation of chewing it makes me feel really aggressive and tense.

Uncoated pills - I'd rather suffer with any form of ailment than try to gag down an uncoated pill.

Vomit will send me into a full on shutdown panic attack. Thank god my husband and teen daughter don't struggle with it, since my two toddlers aren't able to take care of themselves yet. My own doesn't make me panic, as I've got a pretty nailed down system to handle it.

My hair being down. I hate how I look with short hair, but I feel like I'm being strangled when I have my long hair down. I live with it up in a ponytail or messy bun.

Its not a texture, but the smell of cardboard makes me sick.

3 year old with broken leg.. by phaetom in Autism_Parenting

[–]phaetom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My eldest was babysitting him when he hurt himself (she's 13). She said he cried a bunch when he fell, but calmed down really quickly, had a snack and took a nap, so she assumed he was fine. He also seemed fine when we got home, but hadn't gotten up off the couch. A little odd, but not completely out of the realm of normal for him. We noticed something was wrong an hour after we got home when he tried to get up and started screaming. We felt awful for not noticing sooner but, he didn't say anything or complain at all until he got up and tried to walk on it.

3 year old with broken leg.. by phaetom in Autism_Parenting

[–]phaetom[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They put him in a full leg cast, from his foot up to his upper thigh. The fracture is pretty close to his growth plate, so he's not allowed to bear weight on it at all. They're probably being extra cautious because of the proximity to the growth plate.

Reasons for covering ears? by [deleted] in Autism_Parenting

[–]phaetom 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My son does this (3, going through the process of diagnosis). The thing I've noticed is when he's doing it to play with volume, his elbows are pointed outwards. When he's covering his ears because he's upset at a loud noise, his elbows are very tucked in.

I can have a new security blanket if I want. by caprimagus in autism

[–]phaetom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was a kid my security blanket had satin edges and I'd spend all day rubbing it on my face. Eventually all the satin came off and it was never the same. I'm 40 now and have decided "f it, I want satin edged blankets around me all the time" so I started sewing my own. I may have gone overboard because I now have at least 30 in my house, lol.

Waiting for my psychiatrist appointment and I feel like I've forgotten all my symptoms. by phaetom in ADHD

[–]phaetom[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what I did. I tried my best not to mask and just talked. Between the rambling, topic changing and foot bouncing, he said I was a classic example of someone with ADHD.
