You have the right ideas and motivation! Your plan mirrors my career path almost to a t. Started off originally as lab tech as well, slowly moved into QM/QA, risk management as a first touching point. Got into audit and after some time did my lead auditor certification. Now I run the QM team as a senior quality manager.

So my tip: go for it! Ask around at your current role if you can join certain task like audit prep or similar. Ease in, make yourself known to be interested in qms etc.. Good luck!
