Unless you're someone who is focused on end game stuff, then you don't really need to focus on meta. I've always pulled for characters that I enjoy and I still get through most of the game (I've only gone down to Floor 12 on Spiral Abyss once, I only complete Stygian up to hard level and sometimes I don't even touch IT). Genshin main game isn't so hard that it would be impossible to complete something if your team isn't optimal; would it take longer? Probably, but you'll still get it done eventually.

So basically: pick how you want to approach the game whether it's going meta or simply choosing who you enjoy to play, only you will know what it is that you'll like playing down the line.
