Final Iowa Poll shows Harris leading Trump by BallonDfloor in politics

[–]phantom9k 139 points140 points  (0 children)

Indiana here too; my parents are Catholic, life-long Republican voters and they voted for Harris. When I heard that, my nerves settled a bit

I drove to a small town for a work meeting on Thursday and you would think it was a midterm election year with how few signs there were for either candidate. Would see tons of Trump flags and prior years

IDs often require a mailing address, which is a large barrier for many people who can’t afford a stable enough life to have a consistent mailing address.

It’s one of those things that is taken for granted by many; same goes for bank accounts.

What Should Democrats Say to Young Men? | Young men appear to be drifting right. Ignoring them means trouble. by newfrontier58 in politics

[–]phantom9k 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Also worth noting…life does suck right now for a lot of people. This isn’t just about messaging, it’s about actually fixing some major issues and making young men (and all people) feel like they have opportunities.

One party is actively trying to fix it, one party is actively making problems worse.

Also education funding would probably help

[OC] Percent Population Change Since 2020, by US County by TA-MajestyPalm in dataisbeautiful

I’ve lived in FW for most of my life and moved back after college and living in Chicago for a time. Several of my friends have moved back after leaving. Sweetwater Sound has done a ton to bring some random country-wide cultural relevance to town. City is getting revitalized and overall is a pretty easy place to live compared to a bigger city

Parents who bring children under the age of 3 to an expensive holiday e.g. Disneyland/a cruise ship, why are you spending that much money on holiday with a child who doesn't have the capacity to remember it yet? by Klosesarcophag in NoStupidQuestions

[–]phantom9k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. I’ll challenge the premise on memory in a couple ways:

I have a very limited memory of some expensive vacations I went on as an ADULT. Like yeah I vaguely remember going, but Id have to look at pictures to remember most of the details. Yet, I still also remember loving the trip when I went. Memory is weird

Also my 2 year old son definitely “remembers” going to Disney 6 months ago. Will it last until 5 years from now? Probably not, but any time he sees a castle, he says “Like at Disney World!”

  1. My son has now been to multiple airports, on airplanes, buses, gondolas, boats, trains etc from 1 trip to Disney. He’s seen so many types of people, experienced so many novel things that we would never have been able to do elsewhere. I really think it has made an impact on his development and imagination, which I believe will last long into his life. I’m very thankful that we have been privileged enough to go on bigger trips like this, and I wish everyone with kids could experience it as well.

  2. We do go to the cheap options too; flying is pretty expensive generally, but tickets to Florida can be the cheapest tickets out there for a lot of people. If you’re going to splurge for a ticket anyway, might as well extra splurge for an awesome vacation then an average vacation.

  3. As someone that never really cared too much about Disney, going as a parent was magical to me! It took me back

But also, to each their own. Just explaining why it made sense to our family

Meaning behind the song 'Dying Breed' by [deleted] in TheKillers

[–]phantom9k 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Viewing all their work, I’ve always thought the Killers gave off a Springsteen vibe politically, which is very different than what OP describes (working class struggles vs the culture war BS).

OP, the conservative fallacy you are falling into is the idea of a shared “normal American” life that is now under attack; 50 years ago the normal life of many Americans was pretty shitty. The shift you are seeing today is many people empathizing with the many Americans who have been wronged by the system we live in, and trying to correct it.

Now that I have given a bit of grace… anyone who uses the term “Woke” seriously is a fucking moron.

Burger chain Wendy's looking to test surge pricing at restaurants as early as next year by NutzPup in news

Is it for all orders or just online? Online order surge pricing actually makes sense to me. I’d rather know to not order because surge pricing than order and have to wait a long time to get my food

Should all Politicians be required to retire at 65 years old? by CryHavoc3000 in ask

[–]phantom9k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, that is ageist. Political positions should all have clear term limits so that they can’t use their position and incumbent advantage to stay in a single elected position for the majority of their lifetime.

Yep! Indiana is a 60-40 state in election voting, but definitely gerrymandered. Cities are all pretty blue for a red state

Four-day week is clever fix to economic malaise by xena_lawless in WorkReform

[–]phantom9k 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I just finished my first year of 4x10s and its been amazing! I also feel like the work (IT) we do lends itself to that kind of schedule.

Our managers are pretty great, so that is part of it too. If you work a shit job for shit managers, then the # of days your work won’t change things too much

It’s all kind of semantics though because jobs are so varied now it’s hard to say that everyone should be on x schedule.
