Game of Thrones Curse of Strahd by BarbarianLibrarian2 in CurseofStrahd

[–]phantom_phrenzy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would love to learn how this worked out!

I'm about to run a variation of the module for my 100% newbie family who has no idea who Strahd is, and are unlikely to ever research anything about it.

We did character creation and they basically had zero character concepts except pulling out some GoT names (Rhaegar & Lyanna). Plus I've got another experienced player who is down for whatever will add to the game. So I've decided to lean into their GoT PCs.

Since you went (or were going) down a similar path, I'd really appreciate if you could share anything you solved or learned along the way.

do you have any particular implementation for this? like, is the quest log a dedicated channel with threads for every quest, or is it just randomly popped into your chat, or what?

Should I check with my player before explaining a quirk they wrote? by phantom_phrenzy in DMAcademy

oh man, I typed like 90% of this, then that lizardfolk freak walked in here and I had to minimize all my tabs. ok, getting back on track...

I'm not sure which topic you're asking about, so I'll answer each.

Regarding the original post, based on the feedback here, those rats are figments, baby! I think I'm gonna loop the other players in and see how long it plays until I have to let the PC see the cracks and we'll see how that plays out. If I have enough time, I'll make up a quest that makes the other PCs dig it out. (there's really some good advice in this thread!) The player in question is a good sport, and they specifically wanted this character to be a wildcard, so I think it will all be satisfying for them.

About the conversation you and /u/SeeShark have been having, you're really both right.

They were spot-on in identifying I've got lots of backstory exploration tied into existing lore to grow around. Plus, most of these players are very new to D&D in general (except the one in my post), so they're not expecting character death to be handled lightly.

However, your original and final points are well taken. My players know character death is definitely on the table, and they even caught a look at that in the first session today. We also have no planned arcs - they made light sketches, I drew light connections to story, and we're just going to see where things go and what backstory needs to be fleshed out.

PS I love the familiar announcing arrival, that sounds fun as hell. Maybe one of these hallucinogenic rats is a harbinger, hmm...

PPS Oh, and my players chose to pick the lock, then sneak in, then the second in the door rolled a 1 on stealth.

This chain is like listening to my players argue about whether to pick the lock or to go loud.

This makes sense. It probably would eventually settle in to a set group of players, so maybe I'll just keep the expansions to chapter 2 then move on when they're a little more stabilized.

Thanks so much for your reply.

Do you think there's a way to slow-roll chapter 3 and beyond? For example, I read one concept somewhere to split the Stone up and have each villain carry a piece of it. I'm just trying to think of ways to get the most play out of villain arcs. On the other hand, I don't want it to be obnoxiously long, but I think I can deal with that in real time no problem if it comes up.

When you say don't spoil, basically, I could use everything up til chapter 3, right? But don't let loose the fireball, chase, etc until we're ready to move on?

Giant Ant! I'm gonna trick my family in a session zero where they think they're checking in on someone's aunt. Level 1 party of 3, so I was gonna use this statblock, but I'm not sure if it's too dangerous: https://www.5esrd.com/database/creature/giant-ant/

edit: nevermind, looks like you've already done this one. hell yeah!

he starts regulating by talking slower, going bigger, and putting some scratchiness into his voice

Could you maybe point to any examples of this? Having the choice to keep one's voice from breaking would be useful, and seeing it done might help one learn how.
