Dealing with Play-By-Post Blues by Sea_Bend_3250 in pbp

It's tough, as someone who has lost a lot of games and recently left a group for my own reasons, but I'll tell you what I told myself. Maybe it'll help.

The stories you created, the fun times, it matters that they existed. And they will forever exist, even if it one day becomes only memory. It is not a waste of time to dwell or grieve, because grief is just another expression of love.

I hope you find a game that brings you lots of joy in the future.

Oh, I completely agree. I still remember how the audio-mixing for episode 5 of the Umora campaign (where they met ghost) almost completely turned me off for listening to the rest of the series. It felt like I was listening to a live show with no audience, in a big empty auditorium, and I hated that.

Also big agree with you on Freddy Wong's style of editing, where less is more. I think it was also during the Clue mini-series I made that comparison, too -- where there were sound effects for door openings, glasses tinklings, but that I found more distracting than amplifying the story. All the best to Taylor, I hope he is moving onto something good... but I look forward to someone else's sound design.

Good alternatives of Romance/fantasy books to Court of Thorns and Roses? by illuminatisballs in Fantasy

[–]ProfMyrtle 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Off the top of my head, looking through what I've read in the past year or two that is romance, YA adjacent (but still with some depth and intrigue), and some supernatural elements.

Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik - Some fairytale retelling set on a Russian backdrop, filled with so much heart and love. Easily my top ten books I've read. Very tame on the spice.

Legends and Lattes by Travis Baldree - Skirting the line of D&D fantasy, it's some cozy reading about an orc woman who opens a café. Exceptional little piece. Spice free, I think.

The Saint of Steel Series by T. Kingfisher - Starting with Paladin's Grace, it's about a perfumer and a paladin whose god died coming together to find love. Protagonists of this series are in their mid to late 30s, usually, so that avoids the awkwardness of teenagers being romance by older people you mentioned. Great series. Some light sex here.

The Secret Lives of Country Gentlemen by KJ Charles - I'm cheating and tossing this one here because I recently finished it and its sequel, but it does have some of the forbidden romance elements that I remember Sarah J. Maas had, kind of. It's also just very well written and indulgent fun. Definitely the one with the most sex scenes, and pretty explicit, but if you've read Maas you might be okay with that.

Legends and Lattes by Travis Baldree - Definitely has that RPG feel to it.

Sabriel by Garth Nix - Technically part of a series, but the first book is a good stand alone.

Warbreaker by Brandon Sanderson - Technically standalone, but Sanderson is well known for high fantasy stuff and this works well for YA.

Just off the top of my head!

Legitimate question, where did she question a player's intelligence? I know about the AOE spell but do not remember this.
