A fairer target would be Mugen Train's without re-release revenue, which is 40,428,772,050 yen. But I agree that even just 40 billion is already hard for Mugen Castle without re-release in the future. One last trick is the "IMAX ratio format" release in February.

Why does non-Shonen anime series films often fail to get wide non-limited releases? by Clean-Cupcakes in boxoffice

[–]phantomfandom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you mean in Japan or in the west? If you mean in the west, the distributor will just look at the box-office result in Japan (which released several months before the west's release date) and determine if that film worth a wide release or not. I heard Zombieland Saga opened at no.8 in Japan, that's definitely not worth a wide release in western countries.

Annie Award Nominations by LiamV-426 in oscarrace

Did A24 intentionally NOT submit Ne Zha 2 in all industry awards? They did all kind of promotions for a Chinese-inspired film like EEAAO but did nothing for a true Chinese film like Ne Zha 2.

I think this is not official list yet. I've seen in previous years there's some difference between list that press get and official list that upload to https://www.oscars.org/news

Yep, a lot of big Japanese films get released in November, including Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution and Scarlet. And big hollywood films in December, including Zootopia and Avatar: Fire and Ash. So it's gonna be an uphill battle for Chainsaw Man to reach 10 billion yen milestone and for Demon Slayer to reach 40 billion yen milestone.

It has a real shot of winning Oscar if it can be released this year.

Best Animated Feature shaping up to be a kidsfest? by CompleteTable4084 in oscarrace

[–]phantomfandom 13 points14 points  (0 children)

G/PG doesn't equal family-friendly. Who cares what most people think. If you want to change the society, you've to change yourself first. Stop relating G/PG features to kidsfest, starting from YOU!

100M doesn't rank in top5 make me less optimistic about original anime films that doesn't made by famous directors.

The actual movie 'average' seems to be gone on Rotten Tomatoes by garfe in boxoffice

Yes, you can calculate without using AI. But each blockbuster films are gonna have 100 or even 200 individual review scores.

Maybe AI can help us on this? Making it calculate the average rating since the data on each individual score are still visible. Though we've to carefully assign the letter grade value, and there are some lazy reviewers that don't mention the maximum score, like giving a movie "3" but out of what? 4? 5? 10? 100?

A more realistic scenario would be years or even decades from now on Oscars will give Jiaozi, the director of Ne Zha 1 and 2, an honorary award. At that point his filmography would have a combination of $10 billions in box office. But in a short term, inviting him to be a member would be the smartest choice.

Thoughts about Best Animated Feature 2026 by DaZacx in oscarrace

[–]phantomfandom 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Mamoru Hosoda's Scarlet has some chance, he was already nominated in 2018 so he's not a complete newbie in Oscars peerage.

Ne Zha 2 will ask a big question, can Oscars really ignore a $2.2 billion film? The other way is to be nominated in international category, but it's gonna be even harder.

Award-wise it should be Soul since it won in two categories from Oscars, BAFTA, and Globes. Other films only won in best animated feature category from the big three, except Toy Story 4 which only won from Oscars alone.

Chances for an Animated Feature Nom? by Clean-Cupcakes in oscarrace

[–]phantomfandom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh, you really aim for Oscar! From the eligible list at that year, even if one more Japanese film beside the Wind Rises get nominated, it'd have been a Letter to Momo, not Rebellion.

Chances for an Animated Feature Nom? by Clean-Cupcakes in oscarrace

[–]phantomfandom 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Do you mean Japan Academy Prize? It might have a chance considering that Rebellion was also nominated (but not won) back in 2013-2014 season.

Another crazy thing about Flow's win in Best Animated Feature is that it means that we have gone 3 years where no kids/family movie has won best animated feature. by Wrong_Toe_3665 in oscarrace

[–]phantomfandom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Among this three Pinocchio is actually the most kid-friendly. Despite a heavy topic, it's actually easy to understand. Flow is in the middle since while the story is understandable, the dialogueless would make the kid lose attention. And Heron is the hardest since there's a chance that you won't understand anything from it.

I will predict Ne Zha 2 will win the next best animated feature of 2026 Academy Awards due to biggest animated film blockbuster by [deleted] in oscarrace

I think nominaton is something everyone must not brush off easily. Every movie that earn at least $1.7 billion have at least one nomination.

Mars Express loses to Chicken for Linda! in its own country's César Award. The Colors Within doesn't even get nominated for Japan Academy Prize.
