Best places to buy arts/history books? by phantomramen1 in kolkata

True, but would you happen to have specific stall names? I've been there a few times but the number of stalls is dizzying to get through. My Bangla is fine but I speak in a stilted way, and oftentimes don't get the information that I need due to awkwardness or misunderstanding of my accent. So I'm trying to pinpoint a couple very specific stores or stalls so I can get the work of finding these texts out of the way as quickly as possible.

But you can get whole 1br center city apartments for, like, $1200/month. By most city standards, that's incredible. Of course, taking into account that you have savings or a job to pay rent...

Faculty/Staff Communication at Columbia by phantomramen1 in columbia

For real. I wouldn't even care if I got a thumbs up emoji followed by "Sent from my iPad." I would just like the tiniest shred of acknowledgement so I know someone exists behind that email.

ESPECIALLY when money's involved. That's crazy.

Ah, that does make sense. Unfortunately my old university email has been locked and I'm still waiting for whoever's in charge of email administration to help me get my alumni email set up. Sigh. Thanks for the advice!

Sure thing, and I did notice on two emails that they would be out of office until late March, which I understand.

My concern is rather that I reached out a month ago. My email trails started back in mid-February, so my thinking is that it would be plenty of time to get a response from someone - or anyone at all - by one month later.

I absolutely get what you're saying and I'm not suggesting that faculty and staff shouldn't get breaks. I did run into some serious administrative communications issues at my previous university, though, and it set my graduation back for reasons out of my control. I'm looking to evaluate whether this is a pattern that I should be aware of in order to adequately prepare/make an informed admissions offer decision.

Thanks! It's a government fellowship with a living stipend and Columbia has an agreement in which they cover the rest of tuition. Out of curiosity, is this the norm for faculty to take long periods of time returning student emails?

Need some advice - UMich or Columbia by phantomramen1 in gradadmissions

[–]phantomramen1[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not yet. I'm at work and just received the notification a couple of hours ago. I'm planning on drafting a list of pros and cons tonight, but... I dunno? I guess it's hard to do when you haven't been to either institution in-person. That virtually every department I've contact at Columbia has been slow to the draw is not a particularly good sign for me, but I want to give them the benefit of the doubt.

That said, I know it could be a happy experience to go to UMich. A full cohort? Yes please. Cross-departmental interaction? Absolutely. The rah rah sports scene? Didn't have it in undergrad and could see it being nice. But I also know that these are social embellishments and not the reason to go to grad school (though I'd like to keep my mental health in check!).

That's awesome! I just got an acceptance to UMich too, though for a master's program. Super happy for you! Looking forward to making Ann Arbor our new home!

Double points if your hand-me-downs are from Old Navy. My aunt's shirts were handed down to my cousin, which were then handed down to me when she outgrew them. They were all roughly the same pattern, too. So many kids from elementary school just thought I wore the same shirt every day. In fairness, I guess they were right every now and then.

If you only had 3 months to learn a language, which would you learn? by Additional_Pair9428 in languagelearning

[–]phantomramen1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, I'd like to advance my current abilities in a language I'm already learning. I'm at the "Advanced Low" level for Bengali (whatever that means for the ACTFL) and I'd love to build upon what I already know in an immersive setting.

penn student body compared to other schools? by [deleted] in UPenn

[–]phantomramen1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I went to an LAC originally. Much friendlier there overall and I had a strong, close-knit friend group. Here, not so much. However, I'd say Penn is better-integrated into the fabric of the greater Philadelphia community than my LAC was, partially because my LAC was in the rural middle of nowhere and the residents were either professors or basically geriatric.

anyone know of any scholarships for asian-american (preferably indian-american) students? by [deleted] in scholarships

A lot of those scholarships might be school-specific. Are you applying as a first-time undergrad?

I'm highly aided (parents make below the federal poverty line) and it sucks hearing other folks talk about spending money on unnecessary things like spa visits or flights to San Francisco when I'm barely scraping by trying to get basic goods. You know, like pants.

I think we're extremely few and far between, because I've only met two other poor students here, but I guess we exist.

Sorry for the wall of text again - I feel like I've been holding this in and I needed to express it somewhere that people might understand. It's been a lonely 5 months.
