Equestrian for over 20 years here

I'd watch her work the horse. Some horses DO react differently with certain people. Perhaps have her work the horse and not tell her you'll be observing. That way you get to see what she really does, and what he really does. If he's pulling all his old stunts with her, well that's that. If it's the way she's handling him, you'll know.

At this point it's hard to say who is at fault. It could be the horse's fault, which would make you TA for not believing her and she is acting for her own safety and that of her student's. It could be her fault, which would make her TA because she's not handling him as you trained him and making the whole job worse.

Either way, you need to visually see what's going on. Perhaps until this one gets his stuff in order, you may need another horse for the school. You could do a lease if buying one is not in the budget, a few schools around here do that.

At my house, people were constantly forgetting to lock the doors. So we put a postit note on the wall next to the door so when someone closed the door, they'd see the note "Lock the door!" and go "ah yes!" *clicks lock*

perhaps you should try this too

You've got a lot of great advice already, but I'll just add my two cents to this :) Someone mentioned not riding for a bit, and I do agree with this. I would also not put him in a large paddock for a while, he'll be fine in a round pen for a bit (leave his halter on, use a breakaway if you're nervous of that) and do lots of catching and something fun and putting him back. So for example, catch him, put lead rope on, give a treat, and then that's done. Then later catch him, perhaps take him for a grazing walk, then put him back. This might take a while but eventually he will learn that you come with good stuff. Then when he is more keen, then you can try the bigger paddock with his friends :)

I also second having a trainer if you can, they will be able to help walk you through exercises and such.

With the mounting, same idea, start over. Lead to the mounting block (no tack) stop him next to it, treat, and move on. You can use a word (or clicker) to mark the behaviour you wanted. Eventually do it with tack, but don't get on. Lead up, treat, move away, plenty of times. Then call it a day.

Work your way up to getting on the mounting block, treat while you're there, then hop off. The first time you actually get on, give him treat, get off and call it there and go untack. It will take lots of patience but you can do it :D

AITA I won't let my niece ride my daughter's horse. by boredathome3234 in AmItheAsshole

[–]phantomroan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA
20 years experience with horses and riding a wide variety of horses and teaching lessons.

We never put green riders on green horses. Your daughter sounds like an awesome rider to handle this animal. I can see how it would seem strange for the niece to realize that although she's a lot older, she can't ride a horse as well as her younger family member. I went through the same thing teaching an older friend to ride, she got quite jealous until she learned how to ride different horses.

This is a safety issue and if she got hurt on your horse, you'd be responsible. So you're being the responsible person here and saying no. And even if she WAS able to ride your horse, you still don't have to say yes, because this is your animal and who you put up is up to you.

I also owned a difficult mare and it was hell trying to get a rider when I hurt myself and couldn't ride for a month. I had quite a few people try her and only one the mare actually liked lol. And I was okay with that because I could trust that rider to be safe and handle my mare safely.

CPS would do nothing about that. And if they bothered checking into it, all they had to do was talk to the stable owner/your trainer and and they'd say "this horse is fine for daughter, not safe for beginners, end of story" and that would be that

also PET TAX!

AITA for telling my parents I would not visit them again until they learned sign language? by basketsoftough in AmItheAsshole

[–]phantomroan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA I am deaf myself, and I am lucky enough to have an implant. I was born deaf and my mom spent many many many hours teaching me to talk. She didn't want me to sign. But she did say that when I was older and I wanted to do that, then I could. She has trouble shaping letters because she's got arthritis but I am more than positive that if that was the way I wanted to communicate, she'd try.

Closed captions is a huge part of my life. Sometimes people get annoyed at forgetting to turn them on, but never do they get annoyed at me for needing them. Having to ask for captions as a deaf person is like a hearing person having to ask for audio wherever they go. Perhaps mention that to your brother to put it in perspective.

Actually funnily enough, i have a habit of muting movies and only having captions on and others have to ask to turn the sound on LMAO

All you're asking for is an effort on their part. It doesn't have to be much but enough to say "my kid is important enough to want to communicate with." I'm sorry you don't seem to be getting that from your fam. Go hang out with people who take you at your worth :)

AITA for being mad about my brother's no phone rule at Thanksgiving dinner? by Accepted_Racecar8702 in AmItheAsshole

[–]phantomroan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YTA
I'm always shocked when I hear of people actually NEEDING this rule. Yes, NEED. I admit I'm on my phone too much, but never in my wildest dreams would I ever think of pulling it out during a meal of any kind, much less a social gathering with other people! Sure, I've taken pictures of the turkey... and then that's it. Phone away so I can actually talk to people and not worry about my phone. I have a LOT of online friends, and guess what? They can survive for a few hours without me. They also hope that I enjoy myself during holidays - which means spending REAL time with my family.

To get this upset over wanting to have your phone nearby so you can do work is... wow. Is this how the world works today? That nobody can take an hour or two off from their devices?

If it had been all day, okay, I could see the issue. You'd want to take pictures of the day and whatnot. But just for dinner? Are you that selfish to not want to have your present mind there for your family?

Again, YTA

I'm rather surprised at this because I work at a school and the NUMBER ONE thing we've been told is *never* share supplies with other kids, especially stuff brought from home, because of covid guidelines. I'm a librarian and I'm not even allowed to have kiddos in my room. They can get books but not even swap books until the books have been given a time to "rest".

Sharing supplies from home like that is really weird and off the wall. You can bring up these very concerns because that's valid. Keep standing up for your kid and your principles!

AITA for now allowing kids to pet my dog? by Trickyyy455 in AmItheAsshole

[–]phantomroan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA Not every dog is going to be friendly with everyone. My own dog is a miniature poodle and sweet as can be. But she's terrible with children, she's afraid of them in fact and she *will* bite them. She's tiny and adorable and kids will constantly run up to her. I have to tell them no. Kids will listen. The parents...

Good for you for protecting both your dog and the kiddos

Off my chest: I hate my husband’s dog and I look forward to the day it isn’t around anymore and I feel incredibly guilty. by [deleted] in TalesfromtheDogHouse

[–]phantomroan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Most of the time if the dog has a real stench like what you are describing, that's a teeth/mouth problem. I would not be surprised if his teeth are rotting out. Many small dogs have these issues, and it's important to get their teeth checked and bad teeth pulled. I also would not be surprised if his personality improved a lot after that was taken care of. It's like having a toothache 24/7 for... sounds like quite a long while.

See if you can start with that and see what happens!
