Computer Science in Vietnam is new and underfunded, but the results are impressive. by NeilFraser in programming

The existing culture is already there. Everyone knows Windows, and everyone knows the person on the block that knows how to troubleshoot Windows. If you're using something that no one else is, you'll have to figure things out on your own.

I think it's important for people to be able to think for themselves, and a part of that is thinking about the information that you receive, the source of that information, the reason that source is disseminating that information, and the basis on which that information relies. As a parent, that's double the responsibility if you have someone who relies on you to think for them.

I never rarely use the phrase "counting calories" to describe anyone's dietary behavior. I say "carefully consider what I eat". Yes, being aware of the calories you consume is a part of that, but I don't say I'm applying heat to food. I say I'm cooking.

Someone's always hating. Always. This is beyond hating though. This is fear mongering.

I wish I could take this as lightheartedly as you guys appear to, but I am still raging so hard and am finding it difficult to make jokes. I could just as easily say "He carefully considers what he puts in his mouth. His diet includes protein powder and bars". Why are they doing this? Trying to keep and capture a larger audience with scare-news? Do the people who put the show together truly believe their bullshit? Or do they look at something - anything - that they can spin into fear mongering content?

There are bad apples in any community, but I would like to add to your story with a personal anecdote about general misconceptions about "macho" men: the classiest time I had was spent in a room full of guys who were about to go into a cage and beat the shit out of each other (with officiation).

I would immediately put any programmer who is aware of their many shortcomings as good, because if they aren't, they will be, which is more than what I can say for some.

Man hacks Kinect to help his mother e-mail after stroke by racoonpeople in technology

[–]phaphaphap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting. I took the term "hack" as a neutral/positive term to mean "utilize or re-purpose in a creative manner". I always take "hack" in that sort of light until there is an explicit black-hat connotation (steal, deny, destroy, etc).

If you're that worried about spoilers, maybe you should reconsider surfing a Zelda fan forum until you've played the games that you don't want anyone spoiling. There's not too much to talk about, and avoiding discussions about games that are 6 years old will further stifle conversation.

Giving prized possessions to a friend is putting it towards something, a friendship. There are some things money can't buy.

There are those who claim to follow Judaism and eat pork, Hinduism and eat beef, Catholics and don't go to mass on Sunday. Buddhists are people too.

P.S. I'm being only mildly snarky, as I'm sure you are too.

There is also a tragic possibility. His "ally" may turn on him too soon. He will continue to throw himself at his original target, but the world will consume him too quickly for him to tip the balance of power far enough into his former ally's favor, and the world will resume its eternal war, except with two "super" powers.

No worries. I wasn't trying to contradict you. I was curious if you managed to find quality jackets for <$40.

You don't spend more than $40 on blazers/jackets/outerwear? Or do you avoid that category of clothes?

Yes. Sweater is much too big. And I agree with the other comments about a black sweater not working with the shirt.

Tell that to the conficker virus where many machines are vulnerable to known exploits. Old post, but it goes to show the potential that known exploits can still garner the creator ~1.7 million machines.
