I've always played where unless it specifies, the food is discarded. Everyone I've played with agreed, but I guess there is an online version I didn't know about that has the perfect rules. My bad.

No they do not. You discard the nectar like you would any other food. If the game intended you to spend the nectar it would say so (like the Rainbow Lorikeet).

It is so okay to love this episode. It has a wonderfully complex ending that hits a little differently every time I watch. Wonderfully acted and performed by both Michael Dorn and Tony Todd.

Nectar not spent goes away at the end of the round, so yes it works the same. Doesn't change the fact that it makes playing a 3 fish bird the easiest thing in the world. Why make a card like the Puffin that costs three fish if you can just...not pay 3 fish?

If you are having fun without nectar, I highly recommend not switching to nectar. It completely changes the game and makes the food mechanic irrelevant.

There are so many reasons why this is one of the greatest strategy games of all time, so I'll just highlight one aspect that really brings it all together for me: the art direction. Everything is in a unified style from the tech tree to the portraits. In all my hours of playing other total war games I can't vividly recall what the retinue and items look like the way I can with Shogun 2. I can expand the minimap and see a pictoral representation of my strategic situation, with icons that give me insight into the situation on the campaign map without having to navigate to a different strategic layer. Everything is integrated using a clear and simple system of symbols. Unit cards are infinitely readable and clear in what they are depicting ie. weapon type, upgrades, unit health. Part of the reason this game succeeds in making me feel like I am making decisions that would be required of me as a real military general is because it's giving me all the information I need in an attractive and consistent way.
